Had the pleasure of singing in the Columbus (OH) Symphony Chorus years ago when they did this exquisite piece. Will never forget it.
Ditto the Cleveland Orchestra and Cleveland Orchestra Chorus at Blossom not too many years ago. There were tears in my wife's eyes at the end.
La "Serenade to Music" di Vaughan Williams ha toccato il mio cuore in un modo che poche composizioni riescono a fare. Ascoltando le parole di Shakespeare prese vita attraverso la musica, ho sentito una connessione profonda e personale con ogni nota. La maestria con cui le voci soliste tessono il tessuto sonoro è semplicemente mozzafiato, creando un'atmosfera che è a tratti celestiale. Quest'opera è un trionfo dell'espressione artistica, un dolce promemoria della capacità della musica di evocare emozioni pure e di trasportarci in luoghi dell'anima che raramente esploriamo. What a stunning interpretation of this masterpiece this is. When this huge wave of voices rains over the audience, I get goosebumps on my goosebumps. Absolutely brilliant!

I have loved VW's music for as long as I've discovered it, which is many years ago by now. This was one of the first records I ever bought, not knowing what to expect. It transported me then to a place of beauty and it still does. As a Welsh Brit, it's gratifying to see that this is also appreciated in Germany too. Viele Danke !

Was für eine wunderschöne Musik, ich habe durch einen glücklichen Zufall dieses Musikstück gefunden da ich schon einiges von Ralph Vaughan Williams kenne und noch weitere Werke von ihm kennenlernen wollte. Dabei mag ich eigentlich gar keine Chormusik… 😊 aber dieses Werk ist so schön❤. Kann ich ,speziell von dieser Aufführung, eine CD oder DVD kaufen?

What a beautiful and inspired piece of music, and a lovely rendition as well. I have known and loved Vaughan Williams music for many years, but just stumbled upon this one through a comment on his Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis. Adding this one to my listening repertoire.❤

What a beautiful title of this work "serenade to music", in fact the music is a serenade by itself.
What a great composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, this serenade was written as a tribute to conductor Sir Henry Wood, the first time I heard this composer was in Denmark and his famous work for solo violin "the lark ascending" and then in London with his famous " Antarctic Symphony", from that moment I was really in love with his music.

Very nice interpretation of this very english music, as I see it. It doesnt disturb me at all that here we have more than 16 voices, as long as they sing this good. And it is always good with music that has the capacity to celebrate itself.

Such a ravishing piece. This arrangement for full choir by the composer himself does not quite capture the extraordinary effect of the original version with 16 soloists singing what is in effect dialogue from The Merchant of Venice. In the original, there is a sense of intense intimacy, which is rather lost here.

This was written for 16 soloists and orchestra. The forces here would be enough for Mahler's 8th!
Vaughan Williams knew that it would be difficult to get 16 soloists for later performances. So he made some more arrangements of it, among them this version for choir and orchestra. The many choirs here may be enough for Mahler's 8th, but they sing their part very transparent and beautiful.
We heard it played in a large setting by the Cleveland Orchestra, chorus and soloists at the Blossom Music Center in Ohio, and it literally brought us to tears. As memorable a performance of any for which I've ever been present.
It has that capacity to deeply move to tears - of joy I suppose. In the first performance in the Albert Hall, Rachmaninov was present. He played his 2nd piano concerto in the 1st half and was in the audience in Henry Wood's box for the 2nd half. He was seen to have tears in his eyes too.@@jackarcher7495
剛聽完感覺很優美的Hikok純管絃樂版,再因推薦來聽這同名曲,乍看之下,陣容似乎沒那麼有名,但一開始的首席小提琴的琴音與詮釋,竟然能讓我感動到想掉淚 ! 不但如此,合唱部分也能呈現出小夜曲的氣氛 ! 這是以優美著稱的演出版本 ! 這是否與較慢的速度有關 ? 當然與纖細的感覺不無關連 ! 不管如何,這個指揮家因此引起敝人的注意,我記得(沒記錯的話)指揮家在某品牌已出版佛漢威廉士的交響曲,也許詮釋地也很道地(但卻沒得到強烈評價推薦 !? ),將來當將親自鑑賞 !
補充 : 為保留留言經歷,不做根本上的更動而另行補充; 在聽過作曲家親自督導的版本後(可參考「1st recording - Vaughan Williams : Serenade to Music」由2ndviolinist上傳),立即發覺詮釋與錄音上的差異 ! 當然作曲家的版本具有示範的作用,甚或應成為愛樂者的必備版本 ! 因這與「真」的價值有關 ! 但本影片優美的詮釋方式卻有著舊瓶裝新酒的姿態 ! 對我而言,同樣具有存在的價值 ! 否則怎會在聽過作曲家版本之前深深為其所著迷且到愛不釋手的程度 ! 統合起來,結論似為,只要自己喜歡為準,然而必須強調作曲家原意的重要性 ! 整體而言,其他的詮釋方式可視為錦上添花的結果吧 !

Is it possible to obtain a lossless version of this recording? It should be on a proper CD release, the recording quality is exceptional.

Does anyone know how many singers made up that mammoth choir? ... Could the number be in the region of 400 or even 500 choristers?
Well, we estimated 300-400 choristers. So, your assumption was very good. 😊
Good move to have the choir do everything instead of soloists. Nearly impossible to find a tenor that doesn't attack this with the bellows.
This is, in my opinion, a very fine and exceptionally enjoyable performance - but, a mistake, I think, to give the solo parts to the entire choral sections. Charming to hear how the German choristers pronounce the most common of English words - “the” .
VW wrote several versions of this work, including this choral version. Non-native singers in English very rarely pronounce "the" correctly. This wasn't too bad actually.
I once attended a performance of Handel's "Messiah" in the Brangwyn Hall in Swansea by a German choir -I forget which one. One thing that did stick in memory was the, for me, amusing way they pronounced "The Lord gave the Word". It came out as "Ze Lort gafe zah Verd".I had to smile a bit. I expect we'd have produced the same effect if we tried to sing in German for a German audience.@@karldelavigne8134

This is a LOVELY performance; however, I suspect V-W might be turning over in his grave with the size of the choir...instead of 16 solo voices! It's works well here, other than the exposed high soprano line near the end....way TOO MANY sopranos going for that high note!!!
We hope his rest remains undisturbed, since he himself came up with different arrangements than the original version when realizing that 16 soloists might be difficult to assemble in future performances. ☺️
very dull and uninspiring - this piece is one of my absolute favorites but this conductor managed to ruin it - i had to stop listening a little over half way through

I think that is a very uncharitable criticism, and I can't see by what criteria you could draw those conclusions. I found it a very lyrical and well-paced performance.
@@karldelavigne8134 peoples' ears have been so dumbed down - i can't even begin - opera has been ruined for decades now - orchestras more and more have lost feeling and style - old people like me remember how good it use to be
