This piece covers all the bases: from outrageous silliness and frantic Looney Tunes rough and tumble, to ecstatic otherworldliness and tender chansons from the music hall, with hardly a moment to transition from one to the other. In this sense Poulenc's a modernist, for sure, despite his nod to classical forms. It is forever humbling to see and hear Ms Argerich, who brings such musicianship and authority, also sheer excitement-some of her super fast tempi made me bite my nails with anxiety, but I'm guessing Poulenc would 100% approve- to every note she plays, and yet more joy to know how generously she mentors young players. There is no one to approach her. An uplifting experience with these two players and such a fine orchestra, too.

If you listen to any of Poulenc's recordings of his own piano music, you will find that he often took "super fast tempi" in fast music. I think he would have certainly approved of this superb performance!

Such a great concerto show piece... I think many saw the earlier Jussen brothers video of this concerto. But now we have Martha Argerich! Blazing tempos, precise, yet lovely pliable pianissimos. So happy to see this post!

6:30- 9:14 sounds like it could be a minimalist piece from today. Poulenc was ahead of his time here. Thanks for uploading this beautiful performance of this lesser known piece.

You might not know, and my apologies if you do, but: Poulenc was enchanted by the sounds of the gamelan, a tuned percussion instrument from Indonesia, which I believe he heard at an exhibition in Paris in the 1930s. He's attempting to reproduce that mysterious sonority in this passage. For me, time stops during this interlude, it's like a portal to another world...

Martha, as per usual, brings unusual beauty to a piece and a charismatic input. Of course, I don't even mention the technical aspect of it because that is well established. This duo was beautiful, and I love how Martha likes to play with young pianists and make them flourish.

Yes, you absolutely did. Poulenc heard a gamelan ensemble in Paris in 1931 when there was an expo, and he was enthralled by the sonority and uses it in several works. You have a very accurate ear (and apparently Poulenc had, too)!

Only a few minutes into the first movement - someone's having a LOTTA fun here. Allegro non troppo? Sounded pretty molto to me, at least until it slows down at ~ 3 minutes in. Interesting now but not as much fun. Reminds me of Shostakovitch's Piano Concerto No 2.

      Listen closer!
Easily great music !!!! Some of the greatest harmonic writing and orchestral textures of the 20th century! It's absolutely exquisite! It bears repeated listening, which I've been doing for the past few months -- and this performance provided many revelatory new details!
I can't get over how completely wonderful this performance is.
PS - It's music by a French composer, performed (as I've said) miraculously by Argentine and Korean soloists wirh a German orchestra conducted by an Englishman! That cast is as magnificent as the concert hall!
