I know it's 4 years later, but a personal blender is more versatile. They're more powerful which means that can handle ICE, which immersion blenders are infamously bad at. They also usually produce finer purees and can be used longer without overheating. Don't be tricked by looking at wattage alone - the *torque* is also important. Personal blender motors typically have higher torque, which is why they can handle ice and frozen fruit. So if you can only have one, I'd go with a higher power personal blender like the Nutribullet. It has the torque to handle ice and frozen fruit, and is almost as easy to clean as an immersion blender. You can still blend sauces in batches to partly replace an immersion blender. My personal buying order would be 1. Nutribullet for daily blending use, 2. immersion blender for mayo and sauces and hot purees, 3. high-power traditional blender like the Ninja for frozen drinks at parties.

Is it better to have an immersion or a personal blender?
