With the Etchr sketchbooks and how the first page is glued and sits forward more, there's a very important reason for that and a lot of sketchbooks do this. If you have ever had one and pulled those pages apart, the whole cover will come loose from the binding. That glue is vital in keeping the cover and signatures in place. I realized the hard way why that's there with another sketchbook of mine. I pulled the pages apart and it opened the binding right up and the cover was not securely mounted onto the book anymore. So for anyone reading this, never pull those pages apart. Good sketchbooks that use stitching and glue to ind their books glue the VERY first page to the paper that lines the cover sometimes, or like this Etchr book they do it one page in and glue the first pages to keep the cover securely attached.

Yeah, it doesn't really affect anything, I just end up not using the first and last pages of the book. Thanks.

Thank you for the information. I do not need another sketchbook, but when I cave in and order another one I think it will be a cold press ETCHR book or a hot press ETCHR book or maybe both.

I'm glad you enjoyed this. I understand, I don't need another one either but another Etchr cold press is calling my name. 😂

    My second comment (sorry).
If anyone is looking for an AMAZING sketchbook for dry media (and pen and ink) Jazza clued me into his all time favorite sketchbook ever when I first started drawing which was the Stillman and Birn Epsilon series and I will NEVER use another paper for drawing with graphite or pen or even painting with india ink. It isn't meant for watercolor but will take water-based markers like none other. The paper is thick for drawing paper and it's smoothe as silk. I am so in love with the Stillman and Birn brand and am worried after hearing they were sold?? Well I have a sketchbook in literally every series they offer and I absolutely love them ALL.
Also, I didn't realize how different the shades of grey were between my sketchbooks. I have Stillman and Birn grey and Strathmore grey and I have to admit, seeing them together with Pete's incredible drawings/paintings on them, I have to lean more towards Strathmore for the color. All their toned paper has thise little hair like fibers in them, some people hate that, I don't really mind. But as far as the paper quality, I WAAAY choose Stillman and Birn toned grey because it's very very similar to the Epsilon feel of the really soft smoothe surface and my work looks fantastic on it. And like I said, it was my first real sketchbook so if THAT work looks that good than hey! That's really saying a lot! I will always use that brand so long as the paper stays the same. I enjoy the way you're not sinking all your money into a fancy cover but you're paying for quality paper which is why we draw right? We want it to be a great EXPERIENCE. That's the true ticket. Not the end result. The journey.
Sorry for getting on a soapbox here. I have just sunk a ton of money into a million sketchbooks so Pete, this was such a helpful video for me, thank you! Your choices are dead on with mine. 100%. And wow, I really must say, you are a fabulous artist. I really loved seeing your work and feel I Can learn a lot from you! I can't wait to watch more of your videos.

What’s the difference between the cold and hot press Etchr books? Both seem to hold watercolor and ink equally

Hello Cherice! They both hold watercolor and ink wonderfully. The hot press has a smooth fine grain texture so sometimes your watercolor will develop hard edges but it will be easier to get fine detail. The cold press paper has a texture to it so the watercolor edges can appear softer and less defined. Ink will work well on this paper but it is harder to get very fine detail because the pen will hit the bumps as you draw. I like them both the same but for my "clean lines" work I use the hot press and for my "sketchier" line work I use the cold press. I hope that answers your question.

Quick ?: have u tried etcher's cold pressed sketchbook?

Hello. Yes, it's the second sketchbook I talk about in the video. I love exaggerated texture on my cold press paper and this is some of the most satisfying I've found to use. It holds water well and holds up to many layers. Highly recommend. Thanks for the question.
