  • From the creators of Fire & Manoeuvre, a Victorian era strategy game, and one of my favourite Historical documentary creators, The Armchair Historian, comes a brand new game set during the 1700s called Master of Command: 7 Years War!
A development blog was released a few months ago shortly after the announcement trailer and I always meant to make a video about it to talk about my impressions, what I think about the various gameplay design decisions, mechanics, style etc and yeah provide a bit of feedback that Griffin may find beneficial in this development journey, so here it is!

Definitely think moving from The Prussian Glory to the 7 Years War and including the French and British as playable factions was a great move by the devs. Also really like the free movement on the regional campaign maps versus the node based limited to roads movement we had before so lot's of great progress. Hopefully we see more later this month! What do you think of Master of Command: 7 Years War? Let me know in the comments below and subscribe for more videos just like this!

I like the 'painting' aspect. I would have thought someone would have created a TW mod by now that features this. Maybe with some default settings, and/or some text explaining the actual historical colour schemes that were common to each nation.

Thanks for covering our game Terminator! A lot has changed since this last dev diary, but I'm excited to release our next one very soon along with a gameplay trailer! Got a lot of new exciting things to show everyone!

Hell yeah! The thing that pushed me away from your first game was that it was turn based. Excited for this to drop 🥁

Speaking of under-explored periods, I hope one day they can do a French and Indian War expansion, as it was part of the 7 Years War.

Maybe hannover and north america campaigns will be add, i really expect it but I think that they will also developp a napoleonic war game for their next project !

I honestly think strategy games like this one are way more fun that total war. Don't get me wrong, total war is extremely fun, with dynamic battles however I personally think that when it comes to the campaign aspect total war is lacking. Example, in the napoleonic era how fast, independent or maneuverable your army was played a key role. In total war however you have this turn based campaign which you basically move a single unit around the map with no real way to just "split them up" into cores and maneuver those cores strategically across the map, nor are you able to react to what your opponent does in real time to set up traps, ambushes etc. The map is also not big enough in my opinion, in total war empire for example the distance between paris and lets say Vienna was too small, so it felt very limiting in terms of the paths I could choose to march somewhere.Total war's campaign system is in my opinion a system of a bygone era. Real time campaign systems like the one we're seeing here makes me feel that all that excitement I have from watching epic history tv videos about napoleon's campaings and the strategies and maneuvers he used I can do myself in a game like master of command! Very promising, can't wait!!!

We hear you! What was shown off in the video is still very much a work-in-progress (a lot of sketches). We'll be showing off more polished visuals as we get further in development.

Looking forwards to this one. although it is a pity that they didn't go for the War of Austrian Succession, as that was a far more interesting war with a more diverse range of combatants to fight with! The Italian theatre was interesting and dynamic while Flanders saw some interesting fights in Flanders between the French and Anglo allied armies.

Looks great. It's so weird to me how total war has the problem of the campaign getting too easy over time. It should get more complicated as your decisions pile up with consequences and upgrades over time that should make the need to adapt to enemies more important and difficult.

Making the game game harder over time and making it engaging at the same time is tricky. As you develop and upgrade your armies you should feel more powerful and not the opposite as it sometimes feels when games ramp up difficulty over time. If you feel that your upgrades are not impactful or that you're not able to absolutely destroy things despite having a better economy and weapons... well that can be a quit moment.
Not sure how to balance that. But perhaps with strategical difficulties (Enemy called in another nation to attack you, they built a new fort to prevent you from crossing a certain pass), and technological developments (They developed a new type of cannon\gun that will out range yours, or new firing drills).
But this sounds similar to TW. In TW you're only able to steamroll because you're able to bring 3 full stacks vs 1 and just conquer everything with numbers. Once your economy is able to produce units non-stop you're an unstoppable force. M2 tried to stop this but it wasn't possible, after a point in the game it's just impossible to stop the player. But I feel that the issue with TW is the AI. The AI factions will often not work together for a common goal. For example: As Rome you conquer a gallic tribe. The other gauls will generally speaking not unite\ally\confederate to push you back (Relevant in R2). As such once you can easily take on smaller factions anc it's a walk in the park to conquer the map.
By having an end game crisis on top of that, difficulty goes down over time and then up in an instant. That can usually be a quit moment. Especially if, like in Shogun 2, it completely or mostly ignores previous diplomacy or if it destroys a lot of what the player built previously.
The only alternative is that as you grow as a nation, not only should you start feeling internal squables, the outside world should start uniting to stop your expantionist politicies. So while still feeling powerful on a tactical level, the amount of enemies you have (both from within and without) will increase the strategical challenge making for a more interesting campaign culminating in that end game battle they speak of.
Perhaps that's exactly the plan. Curious to find out.

It's only tricky because every grand strategy developer refuses to create a game that considers reality in the full extent of our understanding of it. By making a game such as this arcady and "gamefying" most aspects of history to their standard demolishes the intricacies that build it and make it interesting. Perhaps unreasonable, unrealistic to wish for it but if we want a truly good strategy game that refers to historical setting then it simply has to follow the truth as otherwise it becomes as you said tricky to construct mechanics, systems and even harder to make it fun in the long run.

This is an excellent point, Wolf, and many in our community have also raised similar concerns. We are definitely going to monitor players closely and try to find the best balance where the game feels more challenging over time while still giving them moments they feel powerful.

Too narrow in scope. exactly the same as Ultimate General: American Revolution + Napoleon Total War - the entire point of playing in the 18/19th centuries is the global aspect! Lose that and you're missing the point of the period!
