Thank you for the tutorial. Me & my 85 yr old mom just bought a rutabaga, and we sat down together for a refresher course for her & a how-to for me. Looking more forward now to getting this baby cooked for supper.
I know that feeling. I miss my Mother. Cooks like these really makes me think of her and how she and I would always be in her kitchen since I was a little girl. Thank you for watching!
1. I love the backsplash in your kitchen. 2. Thank you for a clear and concise tutorial 3. You have a lovely spirit about you that gives off an encouragement vibe. Thank you. Blessings
I’m wanna eat rutabagas tonite !! My mom used to cook them often the same way with ‘fatback’. I was at an International farmers market and they had some but the sign said ‘rutabanga’ lol , I gonna go get me some of those ‘rutabanga’ and try to make some cornbread too! Yummy
I just saw a keto recipe for scalloped potatoes made with rudabager instead of potatoes. I was looking to see what a.rudabager looked like and that is how I found you. Thank you so much!
i love ya energy, my grandma is 87 and still going and ive learned lots of wisdom from her as well, she and my mom talk about rutabaga's but i don't know if ive had them and if i did it was a long time ago. it feels good to finally learn how to cook them. Will definetley attempt in the next few months.
Hi Mrs. Carrie I am having to go back and get some of your recipes for some good side dishes for thanksgiving, I am going to cook my rutabagas just like this, thank you.
I never cooked a rutabaga I came here to get instructions I will be trying it for the first time this Thanksgiving November 23rd 2023 if it's God's will yours look delicious with simple instructions thanks
You sound just like my mama! She was from Greenwood Mississippi. 🥰 Thank you for this video. I have never tried rutabaga before. I can't wait to try your recipe!
These were not my most favorite vegetable growing up. I just bought one to cook up for mom, who loves them. they had them in the store, some with huge fronds - leaves on to. Never saw it like that. The check out lady didn't know what it was. I said look up turnip, it was listed as a white turnip.
Hi Valerie. Actually I say in the video that my knife is not that sharp. Just sharp enough to cut up the rutabaga. Been cooking for many years and never use a very sharp knife unless I’m cutting meat on a board. Thanks for watching.
Rutabaga are my favourite vegetable! The area of Canada I’m from (Newfoundland) has really bad weather and poor soil so they are one of the few vegetables that grow there. We eat a lot of salt pork too, but generally pair salt beef with rutabaga and mash it with lots of butter and pepper. Heaven! I think what your mom called bitterness we called ‘woodiness’. It happens with bigger ones sometimes and is a sort of bitter pungency and I’m not sure what causes it. I’ll eat them anyway but folks who want to avoid it can just buy the ones that have firm skin and are smaller than a head of iceberg lettuce. Thanks for the recipe, looks so fantastic!
if you have only had boiled rutabagas you have to try FRIED SLICED RUTABAGA WITH sliced WINTER YELLOW ONIONS AND fried BACON. The frying brings out the sugar in the rutabaga AND the sugar in the onion and the bacon makes it a heavenly sweet treat that kids will LOVE, because it is a totally DIFFERENT TASTE than a boiled rutabaga! If you know anyone that doesnt like rutabagas just give them rutabagas fried this way and they will love em!
I didn't know you could get canned rudabaga/swedes! I never saw canned ones in Pennsylvania, where I grew up,& never here in England, either, even though fresh ones & frozen/diced ones are way more popular here than in the US.
@@14ToeBeans Shred like hashbrown potatoes, press in quart jar with a little water and salt. set on counter with lid for a week then eat and leave in refer.
I’m sorry. I can assure you that in all my years cooking rutabagas I have never cut myself or anyone else peeling and cutting them. Neither did my Mother. Thanks for watching!
It’s not grease, it’s the water the rutabagas were boiled in. It’s a bit yellow because the rutabagas dyed it that colour. It has a little grease from the bacon but not enough to cause a problem.
Swede is short for Swedish turnip....the Swedish word for it is similar to English word rutabaga....that's why Americans & Canadians call them rudabagas
Perfect video! They look delicious! Thanks for sharing with us. ☺️🙌🏽
Thank you for the tutorial. Me & my 85 yr old mom just bought a rutabaga, and we sat down together for a refresher course for her & a how-to for me. Looking more forward now to getting this baby cooked for supper.

After cooking rutabagas for years I now cook them in my pressure cooker. So much quicker and the flavor is really infused. Yours look delicious.

Yes ma’am they are a great vegetable. I probably eat more than the average person. Thanks for watching!
@@carriescozykitchen6632 Sir* lol and i just asked her about them this week and thank you !
I just bought one of these. I came on here to find out how to use them. I never heard of salt pork though. THank you for the recipe.
Salt pork is popular in home made Boston Baked Beans. I usually get it in a big chunk. I look for pieces that have lots of meat on them. Delicious!
Southerners blood is part salt pork!

You're peeling that rutabaga pretty easy! I find them difficult,@nd dangerous to cut!!!!
Yesss, that’s what I’m talking about
I just bought a really big one and don’t know how to cook it. Ty!
That’s a sharp knife!

You could add potatoes, carrots and parsnip to mash them together.
The way you cut your rutabaga is going to be something that people don’t do in the future, I don’t do it and I wish I learned
Is bacon grease the same flavouring as the salt pork? Can I cook them without pork if I wanted too?
You certainly can. Maybe a little vegetable oil or some other type of oil. Thanks for watching!

How long do you have to fry them to get them soft?
Amazing
Patience is the key, never try to cook when you are hungry it will take forever❤😁👋👌✌️
The ones in the can need a lil season so I heard from my kaka and gma. They use them when the fresh bagas not in season or for a quick bite

Boil them first for easy peeling.
I agree but I’ve been peeling rutabagas for so long it’s not hard for me. In fact I rather enjoy it. Thanks for watching!
Good tip!
Thx
Thank you.
Thank You for watching!
Never some them like that. In Brasil we don't have these much but now in the U.S. we have lots. Been fermenting them or cooking like french fries.
Wow would love to try that. Thanks for watching!
Would love instructions on this!

That knife has to be sharch other wise you will have a nice arm exercise a regiment😮
I've never seen a can of rutabaga!

Not good to drain that grease in sink!
I was thinking the same thing.
