Personally speaking initially found it difficult not to see feed back as personal criticism and sometimes this can lead us adopting a defensive attitude. I can see why bikers are resistant towards further training because It can feel like we are being anialated but that is only the ego feeling threatened. Once we drop the defensive attitude we can see that we can only benefit from an alternative view point and this can only broaden our view and improve our skill level. I applaud you doing this series Kate as you are an experienced and confident rider and you are brave for documenting your journey. For anyone who is considering doing an advanced riding course I would say do it, it's not a dogmatic rigid set of do's and don'ts, it is a flexible system which encourages better observation and higher skill levels. Advanced riders and not only safer but actually ride quicker imo. I have done a few IAM skills days on track which have helped me massively and improved my confidence a great deal. Thoroughly recommended.
He is so sweet. He calls you out, tells you why, but without malice. I like that. He just wants to keep you alive. I hope I have someone as good when I get to do my IAMS. I have so much to learn and I’m so scared all the time, I need someone like that for sure 😊
Another great video Kate. I would encourage all bikers to explore advanced rider training as it changes the way you ride on the road. I did my ROSPA and absolutely loved the experience. Hats off to you for documenting your observed rides, especially as you said, your not as relaxed riding as you would normally be if you was out be yourself! Keep up the good work! 😁🙏
Kate, you deserve a lot of credit/kudos for doing this Roadsmart course on a bike that isn't your own familiar 1200 GS. I reckon that takes a lot of ticker/courage. You're doing great. Well done.
I’m enjoying your vlogs Kate - your IAM experiences in particular and appreciate how exposed you can feel having an observed ride never mind posting the video footage for the world to see - courageous on your part to say the least but you’re clearly a good rider. I’ve got a KTM 1290 SAS also - awesome bike 👍
Brilliant idea of a vlog Kate! And kudoes to you for having the nads be critiqued on a public forum. Picked up some great riding tips as if I were there as the student. Who knows, could have saved me from a future mishap. If one completes the course, will they have a reduced insurance rate? Really enjoy all your rides and bike evaluations. I see your new job here growing even more! Subscribed of course.
I’m really enjoying your videos Kate. It’s funny (in a nice way) seeing you do the things I was doing at the start of my IAM training. Your riding is really clean. It took me a little while to embed the system and I felt really inhibited for a long while. Then something clicked and then my riding started to flow. I’m sure you’ll do it a lot quicker than I did 👍
Really enjoy watching these videos and what’s the best Approach to situations and how to ride etc. as a new rider it’s really nice to see what they cover in IAM, and what to look for an improve. Looking forward to seeing the next one 😊
Well done You seem to listen to and accept what Harry had to say well, sometimes a student can give an "annoyed" vibe. Harry 's main focus was always centred on safety. It can feel like a criticism but nice to see that you listen to "experience ". Enjoying this series of vids, thanks for posting. :)
Thanks Kate really informative vlog ,we learn every day on bikes more so than driving a car i think....some great tips there for us all ...look forward to the next vlog ...stay safe and keep take care ...
Great to see how you dealt with the slip road after the feedback and the thought process develops as you become more familiar with and practice the system. Some people actually start riding worse at first, because they're using a lot of brain power and attention to think about the system, until it becomes more "automatic" in application.
Well done Kate. I feel like I'm being followed by the police when being observed. My riding suffers as a consequence. Your observer seemed like a nice bloke, you were lucky getting him. Good on you for sharing this experience.
I am really enjoying Your Video Kate. When I first saw You, I could not understand your accent, but after 15 Vlogs, I can now. You are riding such Big Bikes, wow. Thanks. Ride safe.
I really appreciate u sharing your convos of your riding reviews. There are some pointers on there that I know I can use, ex. To roll off the throttle instead of punching it when trucks/lorries are coming up alongside. 👍🏽
These are great Kate ..Thanks a lot ..Keeping the "Big Picture" while you are being observed is quite a job ..Good on ya ... Yours from New England , Guy
This is really interesting to watch, and as the intructors are telling you, you have good self-awareness to pick up on errors. It's only been a few years since I did my driving and riding test (A2), and they really rammed into my head cyclist etiquette so I was cringing a bit when you passed them - I knew he would say something XD. I have to applaud your motorway skills, I absolutley crap it on there and avoid it, so I think I'll be looking to do some motorway training next year.
Being an Oldham lad, they are all my local roads I use for a quick blast when I need to blow the cobwebs off. Some really nice roads up there, your brave being up there this time of year, too cold for me. The bikes locked away for a few months now
Another good video crocodile. Seeing improvements in your riding from the two sessions. Critique style of both Observers has been excellent as has your acceptance of their advice. Well done Kate.
@@UsernameKate your content is really high quality - and its great to see someone dealing with all the riding issues that we have to deal with. It’s tough learning how to ride well on our roads!
You've just made me Google "are you allowed to cross a solid white line to overtake a cyclist". Answer is "You may cross the line if necessary, provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10 mph (16 km/h) or less". I thought it was something like that!
Interesting video Kate. Good to see/hear some of the feedback this time. Off siding (or was it straight lining? ) ... always a contentious topic. Avoid moving offside to GAIN a view. I've just published an observed ride video from the Observer's viewpoint. Looking forward to your next one. 👍
Hey Everyone! I did these rides with BRAM (Bury and Rochdale Advanced Motorists) and they're a good bunch! You can find out more about them here: www.bramgroup.co.uk
I hate getting instructions on where to go. I did a BikeSafe and they were saying "Just up there, then left, then the road goes to the right, but turn left, with a quick right, then head down to the bottom there and take the third right and then stop when you see the thing. You'll know it when you see it." Apparently, I never know it when I see it.
Parachutes? I think you mean 'paraglide' lol. Over those tops is one of my favourite evening runs out from Rochdale. It comes over that you are still slightly intimidated by being observed ? Anyway, I'm shure that you will be fine with it all. The guy that is with you seems to know what he's doing. 👍. Best of luck with it all.
10:35 IAM no longer advocate “offsiding” and in this instance where you already have enough view of the road ahead it’s unnecessarily placing you on the wrong side of the road for zero advantage
@@UsernameKate Yes, with a bunch of IAM NOB’s and everyone is surprised that your Observer didn’t disapprove offsiding altogether, don’t do it on your test whatever you do, it is old school Roadcraft and useful on blue light runs but is no longer deemed acceptable by the IAM in most circumstances
Well done for undergoing this training. You'd get a much better experience if comms were used as there were many opportunities lost to identify hazards with improved awareness and anticipation in real time. It also helps dramatically with directions en route and not to be continually looking for the guy behind, there's only a limited amount of assistance he can give when you ride on visuals. More structure for this session would have helped clarify your aims and objectives for the ride and feedback to confirm if they had been achieved. Onwards and upwards, have fun and enjoy your rides.
None of the IAM groups use comms because not everyone can afford them so they try to make it an equal playing field for everyone :) There's plenty of structure, I'll just be damned if I'm making you all sit through 4 hours lol
I've enjoyed training with 4 different observers, all great and it's just more eyes on your riding which I appreciate. I've spoken to a few others who'd have preferred to have the same person but I think it's also good because there's always someone to fit your schedule, these guys and girls aren't paid after all 😊

Hi Kate,Suggest that you concentrate on the riding and save the documentary till the end and during the catch up with the observer to reduce the mental pressure you are adding to the ride.
He doesn't say anything about you not looking over your shoulder when using the opposite side of the road during the twisties.. Somebody could be overtaking you!!!
Strange how we're held responsible for irresponsible riding by cyclists. Two abreast riding uphill into a corner with double lines gives no consideration towards other road users
This is the perfect argument, they say there doing it to keep safe yet jeopardise other road users safety, which in turn comprises there's, yet they cannot see that. This option is generally speaking not so much the situation in this video.
They're doing exactly the right thing there, discouraging an illegal and unsafe close pass. If we're going to cross the white line (which we can do if they're going less than 10mph) for one cyclist (to give a safe distance) then we can do the same for two cyclists. There's no "need" to overtake, it's perfectly fine to follow slowly until it's safe to overtake.
