- The rejuvenation of Qantas’ reputation began this week as it took media around the Airbus facility in France where the revolutionary long-range A350 aircraft is being built for Operation Sunrise.
Sky News Business Editor Ross Greenwood attended the event as a guest of Qantas.
“Qantas’ return to Paris for the first time in 20 years, with direct 17-hour flights from Perth was the precursor for one of the most ambitious aviation projects in the world,” he said.
So many people saying that such a long flight will never work. Well, it already works for Qantas with their Perth to London flights consistently achieving above 90% load factor.
I have flow quantas several times on long haul routs. It is frustrating, and very tiring having to transit through another country. I am all for point to point flights.
Great moment! God bless this project and let Angel protector be with Sunrise all the time 💖
Incorrect. The A350 competes directly with the 777-X which is still a number of years late and yet to be delivered. The 787 competes with the A330 family of aircraft.
@@mattl4802 no it doesn’t. The largest 787, the 787-10 has a max pax capacity of 344 and a max range of 12,000kms. The smallest, the A350-900 has a max pax capacity of 440 and a max range of 15,500kms. Not even in the same ballpark.
And it’s not actually competing with anyone at present as the 777X is now delayed 5 years until 2025. They’re losing orders by the day.
@@smeary10 What you're saying is completely incorrect. The 787-10 has a capacity of 344 in a two class configuration. That 440 count for the -900 is in a max-pax config. Airlines like Singapore and Qatar have between 250-300 seats in their -900s. Do some better research instead of taking the first numbers you see after a search.
@@smeary10 Everything you say is complete BS, the smaller variants of the A350 compete with the 787, and the larger ones compete with the 777. Planes can have multiple competitors.
@@RudyKeane there’s little no overlap. There’s no such thing as an A350-800 which was touted to go head to head with 787-10. Bees don’t waste their time trying to convince flies that honey tastes better than shit. You believe whatever you want to Boeing fanboy. I’ll just deal with the actual facts.
@skynews you’ve mentioned 9,7000 N.M. instead of 9,700 N.M. at 5:29 screen. Titus from NewsCorp Australia
I saw that and wondered who does the graphics and then gets to keep their job... not a good look.

I admire how Qantas is not afraid to go for the best most technologically advanced aircraft. Having said, I’ll only fly from Australia to Europe/US directly if I’m able to afford business class (when it’s priced). No way I’ll fly in economy
They don't really have a choice, they have one of the oldest aircraft fleets in the world.
Fleet-renewal should be continual in any well-run airline. Qantas's problem is not the fleet; it's the highly-variable customer-experience - and I don't think an accountant will fix that anytime soon.
P.S. Europe to Australia? I'd want to do an overnight stop on the way.
21 hours in economy? that sounds like fun.
Qantas is still rated the world's safest airline. This project is courageous
it's called money
A lot of incorrect info in this video, please sort it out

Correct
Project Sunrise will also do same flights from Melbourne
Qantas also fly International Routes out of Brisbane
Excellent cabin crew on the PER-LHR-PER. London based, exceptional service in Business and Premium.
I think the most surprising thing for me, aside from how far our aviation technology have come-is they're offering ECONOMY seats on those flights 💀
Who the hell wants to be on a jet for 21 hours???
Me
Especially one that has qantas written on the fuselage
On a First class, yea anytime.
People who have a passion for planes, like me😁
Better than a travel time of 32 hours when having to stop!
The Boeing management should go to Airbus and learn how quality planes are built.
Subtly not mentioning until recently the PTH to LHR flight actually started in MEL. They now have MEL passengers fly on a 737 and move to the 787 at PTH.
And the last one I flew on had the good old drop down tv screens every several rows. It’s an insult to fare paying customers
I am a bit confused, they talk about the Sunrise project and Airbus, and they show only the 787 Dreamliner…. 😅
There are multiple reasons for that. Firstly, Qantas currently has the 787 in their fleet, meaning there is more available footage of it. Secondly, it is the plane Qantas is currently using to fly from Perth to LHR, CDG, FCO etc. When Qantas takes delivery of the A350, it will be used to fly to Europe from the east coast.
Now I don’t mind long haul flights I’ve done DFW-SYD loads, and AKL-DXB, but I really don’t think I could bear doing another 5-6 hours on top of those… I like my stop over in the likes of Singapore for example, I’m a travel agent and people like the stopover so I really do wonder how it will be received… but good on QF for giving it a good crack! 😊
9,7000 NM halfway to the moon.
Don’t forget Asia, for example the Philippines.

The only thing that will make a Project Sunrise flight bearable in any class is if Qantas relinquish control of the window shades & allow their fare paying passengers the chance to marvel at the world outside & below.
21 hours is crazy - how can that be ok from a health perspective? who in their right mind would want to be jammed into an economy seat for that long?? I can see the financial benefits to the carriers though - lower fuel costs, lower landing/terminal costs & less landing/TO cycles on the aircraft. this was always about improving margins.
Regarding fuel costs, it is more expensive to fully fuel the aircraft and fly that distance. The heavy the aircraft payload the more fuel burn is required to keep it at speed. The landing fees saved will be sucked up by taking longer to fully fuel the same aircraft at its destination and turn it around. Also the number of pilots and flight crew is nearly double a regular aircrafts compliment since they take shifts. The whole point of this, is really a huge PR stunt is all, which depending on how the public react to sitting on an aircraft for 21 hours at a time will ultimately decide if the service is maintained or the aircraft rerouted to more regular midway stops.
@EyeInTheSkypaulmcmenamin I understand what you're saying re the aircraft needing to be fully fuelled from the start, and that any extra weight carries a penalty. This is especially true when flying in the 'coffin corner' as all such flights do. Wouldn't it still be very interesting though to see what their models look like in terms of comparison, given that each additional take off and climb also imposes quite a significant burden on the total fuel 'budget'? Also flying direct might allow a much more optimal route to be taken in terms of total distance? Most of these long haul flights already need two crews, so instead of just one of the crews having an additional 'shift', both crews would? The cynic in me finds it hard to believe that QF would do anything unnecessary that affects margins, but I certainly take your points.
Perhaps their commercial model is where they get their break-even, based on expectation of taking business away from competitors? I agree also that the whole thing is a massive PR stunt - and I think also that if any of their major competitors start to get serious about lifting customer experience in their economy segment, it could leave QF looking like the great big cattle truck that they're aiming for. And with the focus on luxury amenities some of the owners of these carriers are making in the various enormous new transit hubs, who wouldn't want to stop there? This is exactly what those (government) owners want? Even as an economy traveller, it's possible now to get into a level of facilities that previously were not available. Maybe that's what this is really all about, given that QF isn't in this bracket of airlines? Personally, I think QF could be playing a risky game. There is nothing to stop some of those hubs jacking up fees in cases where they aren't happy?
It’s Project Sunrise, not Operation. Don’t want to sound pedantic.
The cost to carry just the fuel from NY/LHR to Sydney will make these tickets substantially more expensive than a one-stop flight. Unless you are flying business class, I can't see this plane being profitable for Quantas. SIN-NY is an 18 hour flight that just transports business and premium economy. The lighting, food, and other things are meaningless if you are stuck in a small economy seat.
The rejuvenation of Qantas’s reputation.
Give some journos a junket to France won’t change anything .qantas need to listen to there customers and employees instead of treating them as a cost
Pan Am is reportedly making a comeback, should TAA do the same thing?
Not going to happen
Qantas do domestic and international
Jetstar is fully owned by Qantas
Jetstar are a less expensive airline, who also do domestic and international
@@StephenFogarty2023 since when do you decide what will happen? Do airline companies need your special permission? 👈🤣
Celebrating the “project sunrise” on the inaugural flight flown with a Dreamliner🙄
This may improve customer experience however it does nothing to fix their systemic failures in customer service
please get them for Air New Zealand. they need to wake up
No thanks 😂 15h is already to much without the stopover can’t even imagine 21h flight on them crumped seats and paying 20% more then normal flight where you actually get out of the box and can stretch, have nice meal and relax
Oooh La LA! I love the QANTAS vision for expansion! See you across more North American cities soon!
This is horrible. A 20 hour flight in QANTAS economy? I'd actually prefer a stopover. At least SIA do Business and Premium Economy only. This sounds like actual torture.
Then do that and people who want to fly direct will. It’s pretty simple. Buy what you like and can afford.
Apple Vision Pro is the answer to the stress problem on long haul flight.
Dreamliner is Boeing so let’s see how the Airbuses get on
Has Qantas got rid of the unsavoury DEI hires. Let me know before I lift the boycotting
No it hasn’t. Watch it’s current safety video/travel advertisement and it’s obvious from the first few frames that it still uses DEI hires
All that fuel so dangerous
What language are they speaking anyways?
Bullshite Qantas. How many of your executives fly economy on these flights. There is No way that economy on these flights is better than economy on say Emirates A380. Also let's see politicians and senior public servants fly economy on these flights and the government get rid of it's VIP jets,

At least it’s an airbus, if it was a Boeing stuff would be falling off all the time.
that ain't funny at all bro, you clearly don't have the slightest idea about anything to do with the aviation industry.
@@RudyKeane why not? It’s a fact isn’t it? Airbuses are reliable, Boeings aren’t…
Too bad it's not the 777-9. It is lot wider and more comfortable than this sardine can. See, they love the 787 from Perth to London.
What are you even talking about? The 777-9 hasn't even been released yet, how do you know that it's more comfortable? Also, the 787 is literally narrower than the A350.
Also the 777-9 has nowhere near enough range to make this route
It's wider...
@@pentametero 787 cabin width is 5.49 metres, A350 is 5.613 meters.
@@RudyKeane Yes Rudy Keane you are absolutely right the a350 is wider but I was talking about the 777-9. You know, if Boeing loses some weight and adds another fuel tank it could make that journey but would it be worth it? Je me demande...
