    I do this to on most of my coloring book pages that I use watercolor or alcohol markers on and I didn't think anyone else did this.I just started doing it because I thought I am doing this in my Bible so why can't I do it anywhere else. I also gently sand some of my pages! I am so happy to see someone else doing this. It makes a huge difference for me and makes for a much more fun and frustration free mixed media coloring experience on pages that weren't meant for that. Thanks for sharing this with everyone. It is such a great idea!!❤️

      You are welcome Debbie! I thought I was the only one to use the sanding block if it felt a bit gritty so it's nice to see another sanding fan in the coloring world! Gesso is such a great product if you want to use mixed media on your Bible, coloring books and journals and comes in a range of colors - the clear though is still my favorite! Happy creating x

    I love doing this so I can add water color to my pages. I dont know if the UK has them or not but, I use the thin plastic cutting boards that dont cost much and use those under my pages to color,paint,ink and all things really. Oh the uses for clear gesso are so many and so fun. enjoyed this vid a lot and Smile on my friend, Kat

      ha ha we have those thin cutting boards (bought them in a pack of 6) I'll have to go grab one from the kitchen (I hadn't thought of that - usually I use a piece of paper that has been laminated). Happy coloring x

    Very helpful. I’ve recently got some Tombow markers and find they pill my paper really badly. I’ve now painted quite a number of sheets of cheap card with gesso (some white, some grey) and they’ve been flattened under books. I am looking forward to trying the markers on them. I don’t use colouring books because I draw my own stuff. I have steered away from my clear gesso because it has a lot of tooth - I didn’t know you could get a smooth version - and I am certainly going to try lightly sanding my surfaces before use because I don’t want to damage my nibs Another way you could avoid this is to scribble on a palette and pick up the colour with a brush. I think gesso is definitely the way forward, though. Thank you!

    • @coloringqueen
      @coloringqueen  4 года назад +1

      Thanks Shoshi! I love my Tombow markers but do find with some cardstock they pill after a few layers if I direct lay them. If I scribble out and add water and pick up I have a bit more life in the paper (without using watercolor paper which can be a bit expensive). Good luck with your experiments and I hope your nibs stay safe. Happy coloring and creating x

      Coloring Queen Thanks! I have now gessoed several sheets of really cheap computer card which I’d printed on an inkjet printer with a picture to colour. I found that if I sprayed the printing first with an inkjet fixative, this stopped it running a bit with the gesso. I have got some sheets with white, and some clear gesso, and all have required a light sanding. I am working on the first picture (with white gesso - the black lines of the drawing show through as a muted grey) and the card is not pilling AT ALL. The colours are blending like a dream! I am laying down a very little with the Tombow, direct to paper, and then pulling it out with a damp brush. Awesome results! This is definitely the way forward. The gesso strengthens the card and seals the surface and blending is super-easy. I can see a great future in this!

    Thank you so much for the in-depth video on clear gesso. I have tested many different brands of clear gesso and the majority of them leave a very rough sandpaper type of texture. However, the Art Basics brand worked wonderfully. Another brand that I read works great is the Diana Wakley clear gesso. So I bought a jar of that too but haven’t tested it yet. I did all my tests with my Prismacolor alcohol markers because they were the only alcohol markers I had. Now I have the Spectrum Noir Markers, Zig Clean Color Real Brush, Chameleon and Jane Davenport that I want to test out now that I’ve seen your video. I’d be tickled pink if I can blend my Spectrum Noir Markers as well as the Zig Markers as I can’t on the regular coloring book paper. Will have to check this out in the near future. Thank you again!!!!

      Coloring Queen omg I gesso’d a page out of Magical Jungle and it was nothing but a mess. I tried Zig Clean Color Real Brush Pens, SN Illustrator Markers, Tombow Markers, Inktense and finally Just my Polychromos pencils and I couldn’t get anything to work on it. I never leave a page unfinished but this is probably going to be one time I do. Everything just floated on top so bad, it was a smeary mess. 😢

    • @coloringqueen
      @coloringqueen  6 лет назад

      eek .......what do you think the issue is? too much gesso/paper/drying time? I hope it was a page that you didn't like.

    • @LisasColoringCorner
      @LisasColoringCorner 6 лет назад +1

      Coloring Queen unfortunately it was a nice page from Magical Jungle. It just seemed like everything just slid around on top of the gesso (which I guess is what it’s supposed to do) but I couldn’t blend anything. It just moved the first color as I tried to blend the second color into it, if that makes any sense. Kinda hard to explain. Anyway, lesson learned. Maybe it would be different in a different book.

    • @coloringqueen
      @coloringqueen  6 лет назад +1

      awww no :( It's not meant to slide around at all. Try it in a different book on an ancillary page or page that you hate and see if you get different results. I do not have any sliding on top of the gesso feel at all or problems with blending. Happy experimenting x

    Oh this is Great! I love my create space books but I'm restricted to Poly's only. But with this so many options. And the folder idea is brilliant! Because I had heard of doing gesso before but I hate a mess and taping. This is so much easier. Thanks so much especially since the videos are acting up again
    Edit: I do use a blender marker to blend out Neo II and Inktense on medium paper. But Create Space paper is just to thin and peels up. Also I've been seeing those Finetec watercolors and their so pretty! I think in my medium books after I gesso I could try them.

    • @coloringqueen
      @coloringqueen  6 лет назад +1

      ha ha the one that I experimented with a year ago I taped and went to a ton of hassle to wrap the book ....and it did not turn out so this time I just went easy peasy with far better results and no grey hairs! I use my blender marker as well for small areas - it's such a great tool! One of the things I noticed with this experiment is that sometimes some paper does not love a pencil for example color me happy seems to like fc classics and not a lot else but with the gesso pencil fussiness disappears. Happy coloring x

    THANK YOU for this video.. I have heard the gesso can mute the colors. I do LOVE the way the Inktense really Popped in color, I WILL be using gesso on my next Inktense coloring page.. SO exciting... My 1st gesso experience was not a happy one, but that was for sure the gesso I used (Loretex). That gesso is REALLY gritty... 😝However I did just get the brand u used here n can't wait to play... 😍 Love how u pretty much tried everything on this... THANK YOU again, Happy Coloring... 😉

      I would test on a different paper as they all have different qualities as do the different brands of gesso. The other thing I did, years ago, when I tested out gesso was use a sponge sanding block (they are like a kitchen sponge with fine sand paper) and I sanded the page ha ha to get rid of rough spots. What brand of gesso did you use and book/paper? I can try and recreate it if I have the same items and then make some suggestions. Let me know - Lea x

    Wait... so this will help fix Create Space Amazon pages? I have that brand gesso from my own art work.... I have so many Amazon books with amazing art but terrible paper and I'd LOVE to be able to not pill the paper after only a few layers of pencil or after erasing. Or use watercolor pens or something in it. I'm so happy thank you. I hate to think of all those books going to waste.

    • @coloringqueen
      @coloringqueen  2 года назад

      Hi Rachel, it will certainly help with markers and watercolors but be careful not to press too much and damage the nib. As far as layering your pencils you may be better off transferring the image to a better quality /toothier paper. Always test on a page you don't like or the copyright page for example as we all color differently! Happy coloring x

    Please, I ordered Talens clear Gesso, for my first attempt to use it on paper (for drawing with Polychromos). Unfortunately, I was told that it's thick and rough gesso, that works only for painting on large canvases and won't work for pencil drawing. Is there any trick, to make it work for my needs? Maybe thin it out with water and put less amount, as also choosing a very smooth paper, could that make it work?

    • @coloringqueen
      @coloringqueen  Год назад

      I'm sorry, I've only worked with the brand that I used in the video. I don't know of any tricks but maybe the art store you purchased from could help. But if you are drawing with pencils, is there any need for gesso at all?

      @@coloringqueen If you use colored pencils, like Polychromos, you would be blown away, with how much faster, better and more beautiful results, a layer of clear gesso can provide! Watch this, it's not the best example, but you'll learn something very valuable, about colored pencils. I've already tried with White gesso, and it works, but clear Gesso is the way to go, for stunning results. Link: ruclips.net/video/KQCji9aNY_U/видео.html

      Sounds like it has left a rough finish on the page. Maybe experiment with a different brand on a test piece of paper. If it is too rough for your markers you may be able to save the page by using watercolors but test discreetly before diving in. Happy holidays x

    I have had poor results from my gesso experiments unfortunately. I have tried different brands including the one you used. Every time however careful, the paper buckled. It seems it just isn’t for me as you did a great job Lea. Funny enough when I made the mistake the first time of buying white gesso, it still dried and the opaqueness disappeared so it looked the same as the clear. For me it is far easier to either buy a purpose made book for our needs; or detach the pages needed and get them photocopied or do a ‘trace-down’ onto decent art paper.
    You have spent ages making this video though, so I hope other viewers have great successes.

    • @coloringqueen

      My pages did start to curl and I just put some books on top of them to flatten it out. If I hadn't had the bad experience last year of using the papers tape (that was far too tacky) I'd do that again. Unfortunately, due to copyright laws copying the page that I'm interested in is not always an option. I was more surprised in this experiment that my alcohol markers blended and that different pencils could be used on the paper. Happy coloring x

      / I use what works best for the paper surface I’m working on.. I don’t want to waste time & money experimenting with art supplies that are made to use on very heavy substrate & or mixed with acrylic paints.. All acrylic mediums are plastic based to work with acrylic paints that are also made from plastic .. pencils, markers, inks, are made from pigment in different combination ( not plastic ) 🎃👈
