Japanese Jazz Fusion -- it's a thing -- and it's great! It was popular in the 70s/80s. I remember reading Murakami books that would always throw in some jazz references. By the way, this soundtrack is massive -- there are 90+ tracks included. Yeo noted a soundtrack can't be made for sale due to the licenses. I would still love to buy one though -- one can dream. Great review!

Thanks for watching, the info, and the kind words. Much appreciated. I loved listening to the music so much but it was just too low-key for an intense battle.

Is Yeo literally one guy who made this game alone? There's no freaking way right? Like if that's the case, imagine if he had even AA resources

This game is exactly like being back in 1988 and browsing the game rentals and finding that weird Japanese import game, that looks awesome. But has no manual, or a manual in Japanese/ So you take it home and just figure out how to play it. That was exactly how it felt in the first 8 hours I spent in this.

I have a physical copy of The Friends of Ringo Ishikawa and it's certainly an interesting game. Soundtrack in that was also wonderful, a "lofi beats to study to" vibe. I'll have to give this one a go sometime, thanks for the review 🤙🏻

Really irritating that Sony go on about innovative ideas but games like this where the dev clearly has great talent never see the light of day on psn

Whooooah I have to highly disagree about the music! The music fits the game like a glove! Have you ever watched any Yakuza cinema before? Like the 70's and 80's flicks?? Those soundtracks are packed with smooth Jazz-Fusion, Funk and a lot of similar music to what is in game. My only complaint about the OST, is that there is no volume slider. Because as much as I like the music, it gets repetitive fast, and I'd rather throw in my own Japanese music playlist on Spotify.

As someone who never played any of their previous games, this game was amazing! I'm not particularly a fan of beat em up genre but this was hella fun and it nails the vibe. But yes, the music dont sync with the combat and you need to custom configure the controls for a smooth experience from early on. But other than that, I have absolutely no complains. Highly recommended if you're into the laid-back jazzy-lofi and melancholic rebelious slice of life kinda thing. You just kinda have to be in that mood to enjoy it. Maybe pick it up and wait for that moment in your life to enjoy this masterpiece.

Naah the soundtrack is one of the best parts of the game, its going for an old school drama yakuza mood and it works perfectly as it clashes with the violent actions going on inbthe screen, makes it more cinematic, if it had generic action game music the game would be like 2x worse than it is

My biggest issue was definitively the controls switching around what inputs originally told me they do. It creates confusion & jankiness.

What's your thoughts on it so far? I was on the fence about getting it but after watching this review, I think I might pass on it. The repetition is what made it a "no buy" for me.

@@infernoheatblaze My biggest issue was definitively the controls switching around what inputs originally told me they do. It creates confusion & jankiness. The game has freedom but no objective indictor. This could be hit & miss for some players. Some will adore the freedom of roaming & figuring things out on their own while others will be highly confused what they should even be doing to progress through the story. I’m the latter. I’m playing the game with a guide instead to avoid going back & forth. Animation wise it’s great & the somber naturalistic tone is nice.

I don’t think this guy has ever played friends of Ringo Ishikawa.. the game is way more in depth then just a beat em up side scroller 🤦‍♂️ both games are simply amazing coming from a small ish studio 👏👏

Yo, is this game on Nintendo switch? I had it on my PC but did they not release it on Switch?
It’s not in the shop, it’s nowhere to be found
I played ringo on switch, and it was a way nice game to have on the go
