This is the finest Mozart 39 I ever hope to hear; the tempi are perfectly judged, and the great Phiiharmonia Orchestra play their hearts out for Maestro Klemperer.
Klemperer/Philharmonia was a great combination. I read that Klemperer was intrigued that people wanted to hear his performances of the classics when he was originally known for his performances of the avant gaard at the Kralische Oper in Berlin.
The music critic Dave Hurwitz sent me here. He says this is his favorite performance of Mozart's 39th symphony. I see others here in comments think very highly of it too. So I looked up Otto Klemperer in Wikipedia. The article says of him "His approach to Mozart was not universally liked, being thought of by some as heavy, but he became widely considered the most authoritative interpreter of the symphonies of Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner and Mahler." And so now any time I listen to this performance it's going to sound heavy to me. I know I know. I'm way too impressionable.
Yes, perhaps - just try to ignore existing thoughts of "I like it this way", "It should be played this way" - and just listen intently and see if you like it!
The 1950's and early to mid 60's, before his tempi tended to get very slow (though sometimes very effective), Klemperer was at the peak of his extraordinary career with the bonus of conducting the great Philharmonia in it's finest years.
I think the last three symphonies should be played together, as a whole. Certainly the opening of this one has a primordial feel, as if everything were beginning here.
The late 50s, early 60s was possibly Klemperers golden time. Fantastic performance of the symphony. How different it is to these period instrument goofs who have insulted our ears in recently ...
Only thing comparable to the mastery of early EMI Klemperer in this symphony is Weingartner - preferably with the old RPO in 1929 rather than the remake with the LPO in 1940.
Kamal Kapur bastante discutible su afirmación Kamal: desde luego las versiones de Klemperer tienen mejor sonido! y además la Philharmonia era más orquesta que la "hechiza" Columbia!! oscar ignacio olavarria aqueveque
Although I think Walter's performance with the CSO is quite special, Klemperer is better IMO. Walter is a bit sluggish in the lst movement and CSO is not quite in the same league as the Philharmonia at this time.
Mozart performances of Klemperer are very good!
What a fine orchestra the Philharmonia was in the Klemperer period
He does not seem to be "too late" in these days. I love his orchestral placement which can emphasize the second violins!

Mare dirijor !
ich liebe klemperers mozart!
Old school by one of the greats. You just can't find that depth of understanding and commitment in today's jet set.
...Klemperer does so much differently than others. And it is always right!
Mi piace moltissimo
There is a lot of variety of color and sound in this recording in spite of the age of the recording when technology was not as it is today.

The best Mozart 39 by far
après tant d'années il reste le meilleur, le seul capable de donner à cette oeuvre sa grandeur

these very slow tempi are the sign of maturity
Incredible.
Fantástico!!
Beautiful ! Thank you for posting !

Remembering OTTO KLEMPERER, who died on this day in 1973.
July 6.

Put this one against the stars.....the stars will happily win!!!!

Wonderful. I also love Mravinsky who is more dramatic. Both are outstanding.
q puedo decir..........ya lo hace Mozart.........
Why did he skip the repeat in the first movement?
Almost no conductors played the exposition repeats in those days.
Although this is a fantastic interpretation of this work ...Bruno Walters rendition with CSO is better IMHO

This is a very good old recording. Klemperer and Szell,I say!

Même pas capable de glisser la pub entre deux mouvements !
