    Although a 300 mile round trip Aberdeen were my local team, I say "were" as Inverness CT and Ross County are now my local teams but once you fall in love with the Dons it's for life, after a terrible barron time we won the league cup in March 2014 and I have no doubt it was the greatest day of my life, the feeling I had that day at Celtic Park was incredible, God only knows how the fans felt that night in Sweden, it must of been league cup 2014 times 100!!! Stand Free!!!

    Its not often mentioned or remembered that they almost did it again the following season only losing in the semi final to Porto. The other semi was Man Utd and Juventus.

      We were unlucky to lose the other semi final to Juventus. We were the better team over the 2 legs. What a final that would have been!! United v Aberdeen.

      Porto paid the ref off in that tie.
      The year after that, we reached the Quarter Final of the European Cup, losing on goal difference to (ironically enough) Gothenburg. We exited the competition unbeaten.

    I also remember nearly sh***ing my pants when that Real free kick missed by a bawhair in the dying minutes.

    I remember watching this match back in '83. Yes, it really does seem like 38 years ago, but I do recall Aberdeen were all over Real M in the second half. Really had them on the ropes. Fully deserved the victory. 2-1, and even then the Real goal was from a very dodgy penalty.

    Im an American and unfortunately growing up I wasn't able to watch any Scottish Football in the 1980s. And of course I've heard stories about them and obviously them being the last non Celtic/Rangers team to win. I have a few questions for those that were/are supporters and for those who supported other clubs that remember them. Would love to hear your stories and honest opinions for those that lived through it, no matter who you supported. Just how great was Aberdeen in the 1980s? Who were their best players? Was Celtic/Rangers down during those years or were Aberdeen that great? Would love to hear from you, cheers!!

      Bit of both , Celtic were still a force (winning 4 titles from the late 70s to mid 80s) rangers had fallen away while Dundee Utd also had a great side and manager ,Aberdeen had some great players at the time Miller , Mcleish,Leighton but what made the difference was the manager.Ferguson brought a desire to win and was on a mission to topple the Glasgow clubs , a great time to be an Aberdeen fan and a great time for Scottish football in general

      Indeed. What doesn't get mentioned is that after Big Eck's equaliser we were still going out on away goals, but Hewitt goes into the goal to retrieve the ball @ 13:57 and launches it upfield to get on with the game. Less than a minute later he had scored the goal that was to be the winner and make everything that came after possible. Always thought it was a pity the cameraman misses the build up by focussing on McLeish as the game gets underway. Obviously the ball goes out for a throw in and someone centres and Black gets his head on it, then Hewitt puts away the rebound.

      I don't like Rangers either. Let's be fair though. Yes Neale Cooper did play for Rangers as did Alex Ferguson. Alex McLeish later managed them. I don't feel the immense contribution they made to the success indicated above should not count because of an association with Rangers.

    • @gavb9816
      @gavb9816 7 лет назад

      kevin gallagher you are probably right, in that most players would do the same
      I don't think Miller or McLeish would have went to the Old Firm as players. I would imagine they were both sounded out by them as they were the best in the country,at the time

    • @wonjubhoy
      @wonjubhoy 7 лет назад +3

      I am glad we agree the phanton. I am actually a Celtic fan but I have a healthy respect for the Aberdeen team we competed against. In 1980 you beat us twice at Celtic Park in the run in to winning the league and in 1984 and 1985 you beat us by 7 points on both occasions. As a child at the time I was cheering on the dons against Real Madrid and feeling delighted when they did won. Much later on I found it hard to accept Gordon strachan as the Celtic manager as I remembered him as a formidable foe from the 1980s.

    • @djharrybutler

      Cooper actually left 3 years later and it was for Aston Villa. He then moved to Rangers in 1988 and made his debut in the infamous "Simpson/Durrant" match where he scored a great goal from outside the penalty area. He signed again for Aberdeen but could not get up to the fitness standard required and left without making a single appearance
