when i was a child living in virginia on the chesapeake bay my family caught our own crabs. we'd sit around a newspaper covered picnic table cracking open cooked crabs and picking out all the meat. my grandmother made her own crab cakes using a cast iron frying pan and bacon grease.
Seriously, every time a new video gets uploaded I know for a least 10 minutes of my day I'll have a full smile on my face. Wonderful channel, thanks for all the wonderful stories and your delightful personality!
I grew up on a creek that connected to the Chesapeake Bay.I'd sit on the edge of our dock and use frozen eel on a string to catch blue crabs for dinner.Than pick wild asparagus from the forest edge and bring it home for my parents to cook. The cost now in Texas is prohibitive to reproduce those crab cakes so I wait for trips home
I love this channel. The food looks great. And I really love the chef's stories and historical narratives. Are there RUclips Channel Awards? This would be a winner for sure.
Darren, not only do you know all the tricks of the chef profession, but I love the way you speed through the boring repetition processes...😉. I guess practice makes perfect! 🤗
The best crab cake I ate was when I visited Baltimore. I don't think I'd really had a proper one until then. The ones I've had before were often small, with the crabmeat chopped fine, even at nicer restaurants. The one I had in Baltimore had beautiful whole chunks of crab meat, was actually mostly meat, and was about the size of an average adult fist (it was certainly larger than my fist, but I have small hands). It came with thick cut fries, beet pickles and a fresh slaw. It was actually too much food for me normally, but I ate it all anyways, and had a distended stomach for a good part of the day that I had to walk off. The large one you made is about perfect for a meal. Now I want to try and make these myself. :)
I lived in southeastern Pennsylvania which is where I discovered Maryland crab cakes. One bite and it became one of my favorite foods. I've since moved to Wisconsin and east coast seafood is something I really miss.
Yum! I'm not a fan of frozen crab cakes, so maybe I'll consider making these homemade ones for holidays. But too bad my mom can't have them because she's allergic to shellfish.
Thanks Darren for adding a new video! I ALWAYS check my subscriptions to see if you have a new video. They are the best! Yes, I sometimes add an obnoxious comment but it is written with a smile.😁! I adore your shows...and your Winston segments!!!😁👍😊👏👏👏
What I find funny is that I was making tuna cakes for lunch today and one of the thoughts that came to my mind is I wonder if Darren would post a crab cake recipe. Then I look and here it is.
Frank in Maryland . The delicate flavor of Blue Ceab meat is essential, as Darren notes. These crabs may be caught from Long Island Sound to Texas. If you chance to have part of a left over crab cake, and best of all with a little imperial sauce, it will make a fabulus sunday brunch omlette!
As a person who grew up in a WEST VIRGINIA Born Family, We were Raised on Whatever we Grew, Shot, Raised, or Baked Ourselves. My Grandparents even smoked their own MEAT, & Fish, We made HUGE VATS of Sauerkraut, Made Hundreds of Jars of Jam From The Fruit as it came in season, Apple, & Pear butter, Canned Vegetables, Fruit, & Meat,(What wasn't Smoked), & Absolutely Nothing went to waste! What I find so funny, Is your Talking about the "English Breakfasts". We had the same things Every Day. Ham, Sausage, Bacon, Eggs, Potatoes, Toast, Biscuits, Home Churned Butter, Fresh Milk, Etc. Everything was Cooked & Baked On the Wood Cook stove. We Didn't Consider It Extraordinary. It was A Daily Thing. I Still, do the same things today. The only difference is, Now I have a gas Stove, & a Refrigerator and Freezer instead of a Root cellar. Personally, I think I preferred the days When we didn't run to the grocery store for Everything we wanted like people do now! At Christmas Time, The Sears Catalog was where we did the shopping, & Kids Didn't Expect Thousands of Dollars in Toys Every Year! I Preferred it That way, rather than the way it is now! People are Much Too Picky, & Tend to be Greedy Now. No, I'm not ancient. Not even 60 yet, but I Still think things are Worse Now than they were even just a few years ago when people worked for what they had, & it was Considered a NORMAL WAY OF LIFE!
Good day dear sir...I sure enjoy your episodes. We make delicious crap cakes here in Surfside Beach SC...we love to make crab cakes...NO Maryland crab cakes. We get our crabs here in the marshes of Murrells inlet...all jumbo lump...so fresh and delicious. Wish I could fix you a plate with yummy hot hush-puppies, and Coleslaw...I make pretty good crab cakes if I say so my self! I will give you the kudos on your delicious short-breads.
Hi Darren! Always a great day when you upload new content. Would love to know if you hold any particular British crab meat in as high regard as you do the meat from the US East Coast? I'm in Wales specifically - and crab from the Pembrokeshire coastline is my only point of reference.
Personally, I'm not a fan of crab and I've tried it in many forms. Are there any foods you don't like? How do you judge the taste of a food you don't like? When I was in Hawaii, I went on a tour of the Dole plantation and the tour guide sliced one up for everyone to taste. They asked, "Isn't it the best pineapple you've ever tasted?" I had to tell them, I don't like pineapple. I told them it wasn't the worst pineapple I'd ever tasted. I've always wondered how cooks can make a good version of a food they don't like.
It’s just the way us Brits say it with our accent. When I moved to the US from the UK, everyone laughed when I pronounced it literally ‘Mary-land’. It took me a while before I learned it was pronounced more like ‘Merilyn’.

Bacon grease!!!! I always have a mason jar with bacon grease in it. So nothing bad happens
Cast iron and bacon grease. Very few items can't be made delicious with those two items. Your grandmother's crab cakes sound amazing.
As a Marylander thank you for not putting too much binder and good heavens thank you for not putting peppers in them !!!!

So true!
I'm a Marylander. I thank you for not making crab-flavored bread crumb cakes and for not putting vegetable fillers (ex onion, bell peppers) in it.
I also live in Maryland - but i keep kosher. But even *I* know what should go in those things! LOL!!!

For your next Q&A, what is your brand favorite for salt and pepper? Do you use a sea salt, Kosher salt, pink salt etc
Listening to this while I’m making my lunch. (It’s penne.)

To make these more keto/Paleo friendly, substitute almond flour for the bread crumbs. Everything else is good. Thoughts?

Gotta be krabby patties 😎
Darren, what is Old Bay?
We don't have it in Australia, that I know of.
Some sort of sauce?
Is there a substitute?
Classic blend of dried herbs & spices for seafood. Buy it Amazon or make your own- Google recipes

Hi!
Are the crab flesh cooked or raw?
You should definitely have a Show on FOOD NETWORK. You have a Great Personality, Funny and Great Chef.
Maybe one day!
Could you bake them?
So does this mean mr Krabs was killing and turning other crabs into patties? Didn’t realize the show was this dark.
Chesapeake Bay...or Bikini Bottom! 😅

I was wondering if you have any cooking tips to start out because I don't want to be a professional but I do want to be good at cooking.

Chicken Fricassee or
Chum Fricassee?
Winston sabotaged your recipe. He left out adding the egg in the instructions.
Anyone know the conversion of cups into grams ?
Google the conversion- dry, 1cup =128 g
