If the 5090 is minimum $1999 MSRP, that's an extra $500 tacked on. Damn. RTX 50 will probably have higher MSRP across the board versus RTX 40. People may just skip the next generation.
Unless you're playing Fortnite, which quietly ups system requirements every chapter. AND it's Epic's showroom for UE5. P.S.: UE5 games in general 😢...I weep for all of us.
45 out of 50 states in the US have a sales tax. The base rates range from 2.9% in Colorado to 7.25% in California. Then the counties and cities get to get their greedy little hands involved. Many of the major cities are over 10%. So, when you look at US prices you have to understand that in most cases we are paying more than the selling price. I live in a county area that taxes at a 5.6% sale tax rate which is the state base rate. If I go just 6 miles it's 8.1%.
Ah yes, just what GPU sales needed - a 25% increase. *dust collection on store shelves intensifies* The best part is that even people outside the USA end up paying the increase as well. EVEN THOUGH WE DONT LIVE THERE.
And that's on top of paying our own governments, with their own lovely tariffs. Come to think of it, I reckon the price might not change much down here, seeing as we're already paying 600+ USD for a 7700 XT.
Western Europe prices are already pretty close to parity with US prices when you factor in sales tax. This will effectively just be an additional tax on US consumers, then we'll get to enjoy people in the USA complaining about international disparities in list price for a change.
@@InnuendoXPNope, I've seen many comparisons which factor and take into account taxation. In the EU, we tend to pay around 15-20% more on electrical goods on average, than customers do in the US (and 30-35% more than those in East Asia). I guess one redeeming thing is, in the EU we do however tend to pay around 10-15% less when it comes to food and groceries than they do in the US. Which TBH probably accounts for more of your wages annually.
Not necessarily. EU prices are listed with taxes included, whereas US prices are listed without tax. When you purchase in the US, tax is added at the point of sale. Sales and property taxes are also increasing daily here in the US. Lastly, since NVIDIA is greedy, they're likely to increase their prices even MORE for people in Europe (sadly) making Europe probably the worst market for GPUs. Gamers in both America and Europe have to pray this does not happen because it will be a neverending trend of price increases, eventually causing people to stop PC gaming.
@@kanuhit's really not just one man. It's been the same in Jamaica for decades. They only recently (April) increased the threshold to $100. When we ship from overseas we pray to Lord Gaben that we don't get any DOA or require an RMA or anything of the sort. Otherwise, it's expensive shipping back and forth and paying customs more than once. A faulty product could easily inflate to 3-4x it's list price.
I swear to god this pisses me off because even though im in Australia the last time this happened AIBs increased prices here even though we didnt place any tarrifs. These vultures will take any opportunity, bastards
Here prices of GPUs are already up by about 5% just because of the "news"... I live in a small EU country. For sure we will match or make our prices higher than US prices....
You could have bought an RTX 4080 if you had some basic money management. $2 per day per 2 years and you can purchase even an RTX 4090. It’s about consistency.

Long run it wouldn't be the worst thing. Software's been developed expecting exponential increases in compute power as the norm, if the brakes are hit on that then development will need to pivot into getting more out of what we've got as standard. Meanwhile most people aren't using their hardware for much more than they were doing 10 years ago. Outside portables & laptops, PCs hardware is generally using about double the power it needs just to get an extra 20% of so performance. The escalating development costs, production values & performance requirements for AAA gaming is massively unsustainable, the Indie space is making interesting & good experiences that can run on decade-old hardware. There's a huge gulf in-between of projects of mid-scope with solid production values that run well & don't need ridiculous amounts of dev time or performance. Games have looked good enough for like 10 years already for most art styles. This is because AAA is beholden to shareholders & the impossible task of endless growth, none of this is sustainable & the moment the growth tap of this industry stops, there's going to be the mother of all share dumping!
@RAM_845 greed & social justice are diametrically opposed, what are you talking about? Greed is certainly responsible though. As for 'social justice', don't misinterpret what corporations are doing, they're feeling out demand for unserved markets, it's another mechanism to try to find a growth vector. If they can create a product that becomes a nexus for some cultural movement, then they have some more consumers to exploit. As for anyone who has a problem with it for some reason, they'll forget all about it the moment a product they want comes along.
here in israel (yes i don't care who you stand with i don't care about this propaganda crap) buying a 4080 is paying as much as a 4090 in the us and not expensive models even "cheap" like "cheaper" models that i mean are not as expensive as models like the rog strix or gigabyte aorus master or whatever it is called was used to cost as much as the 4090
I want to correct him a bit. The cost of the tariff is passed down to the buyer. The supplier passes to the retailer who their profit markup will also increase as most it is a percentage increase not a static number this applies to both the supplier and the retailer then that is passed to the consumer. You will have retailer increasing prices on the day of the tariff to be able to buy the next round of products at the increased cost even if they have a contract that says "business A will buy X amount of product from business B for over Y amount of time" which those contracts business B will be screwed or try to rework the contract for the increased price they are paying. Even if business A doesn't pay more they will still send the cost it will be in the future to buy along to the consumer to make more profit just Business B will change even more next time to recoup the cost. This most likely will mean an even higher cost then just a 15% + whatever markup cost the retailer has would be in the first place.

The funny thing is, Nvidia's been cooking their prices up all this time. If they actually take this shot to jump the prices another 25%, they may as well abandon the PC market. It's just going to be the whales and AI farmers.
There has been a similar story in Russia since this year. A tax fee of 20% on all goods you buy abroad for more than $200. Before this year, the tax-free limit was $1,000. Last year I bought Ryzen 7 7800X3D for 32.5k rubles ($340). Now it costs 38.5 thousand rubles ($430). I don't even want to think how much the RTX5090 will cost, although 1.5 years ago I bought 4090 for $ 1,500.

And quality control will take a hit with new plants.... Just a thought...
Considering the fact that 40 years ago, a CEO made 30x the average salary in their company, and now that figure is like 4-500x, with wages not keeping up with inflation, I have an idea of who can buy one less yacht or jet this year to make up for onshoring production cost and wages. Call me crazy but maybe the obnoxiously wealthy should be slightly less obnoxiously wealthy for the benefit of the normal people that produce and enable the wealth they have

Guys, im from EU and have this all figured out two decates ago, here is what you can do: 1. Upgrade less often, not every other year but each 4-5 years. Its so so ecological...mby gay but ecological. 2. Dont buy but wait for promo/discount. I often buy parts that are 2 years old. 3. Wait till some manufacturers move to India or Africa, EZ ^^ 4. My personal favorite- just move on, you dont have to be in this hobby. Gaming industry is already trashy enough. Just do sports, get urslf a bike or do triathlon. Or do guitar classes, or learn a new language. OR go on a date- how many dates you can have for 2500usd, each with a different grill?! Mby, just mby, u will even get laid in the process. Ps. Whatever you do, dont buy consoles, especially those from evil corpoes like Sony or Nintendo. Mby Steam Deck if you really have to...
he advice here has some good points but also some drawbacks to consider: Upsides: Save Money: Upgrading less frequently and waiting for deals can definitely save you cash on expensive graphics cards. Environmentally Friendly: Upgrading less is better for the environment as it reduces e-waste. Broaden Your Horizons: Taking a break from gaming and exploring new hobbies like sports, music, or languages can be enriching. Downsides: Outdated Performance: Waiting 4-5 years for upgrades might leave you with a PC that struggles with newer games. Limited Options: Waiting for deals can restrict your choices, as you might miss out on the latest features. Shifting Priorities: Not everyone wants to replace gaming with other activities. Some people genuinely enjoy PC gaming as their hobby. Here's a more balanced approach: Research: Identify the performance level you need for your desired games. There might be slightly older cards that still offer good value. Price Trackers: Use price trackers to monitor graphics card prices and snag deals when they pop up. Consider Alternatives: Explore refurbished cards or previous generations that might suit your needs. Prioritize: If gaming remains your main hobby, consider allocating some budget for upgrades when necessary. Console Alternatives: Steam Deck: This is a valid option for portable PC gaming, but it might not have the power of a high-end graphics card. Ultimately, the best approach depends on your individual needs and priorities. Don't feel pressured to abandon gaming altogether, but explore ways to be strategic with your upgrades and potentially save money.
@@henrikfox8960 yes, a lot of great points, second hand market is spot on! As you say it all depends on what games you want to play, it determines performance target. Also hybrid approach- gaming to other hobbies healthy ratio, that's why I learn cooking, good for me and others :)
Tariffs were once the primary source of funding for the federal government. That changed in 1913 when income tax took over that function. Still, today, tariffs are an important way of protecting American consumers and businesses. China is notorious for not playing fair and often will only comply when threatened with high tariffs. I can't even begin to list the number of times and ways the Chinese government has assisted its exporters to hurt and even wipe out foreign competition. Whole industries have been subverted. Look at televisions for instance. China "dumped" tv's on the U.S. years ago. Which means the televisions were sold to the U.S. market for years under the cost to make them. The Chinese government was illegally supplementing the manufacturers in China. U.S. manufacturers could not compete and went out of business. The most effective way to stop this practice is to increase the tariffs on that product to counter the offsets being provided to Chinese manufacturers by its government. This evens the playing field. Another way tariffs are used is to discourage U.S. importers from relying on one source for a product. In this case China and certain electronics. Again, this is done especially when the exporting nation used unfair advantages to gain market dominance and particularly when that nation does not align politically with the U.S. and does not allow fair competition in its own markets.
That situation is already implemented in the Middle East region; all exports from China will be subject to custom tax, with an additional 15% tax for the Kingdom (as per Amazon SA prices).
Given that people will by nVidia no matter what the price is, I don't see this really do anything at all in terms of slowing down PC Gaming specifically.
@@jernaugurgeh451 uninformed, yes china most certainly does add tariffs. australian wine, agriculture. u.s. vehicles, batteries. japanese steel, aluminum to name a few
It will be interesting to see how this plays out. On the one hand they could move assembly to say Taiwan, Vietnam, or Mexico and avoid the tariff. On the other hand if all GPUs are made in China, then every manufacturer is equally affected which means there isn't a strong incentive that would force that move.
Lets say the tariffs go through, prices are increased for consumers, and then next year the tariffs are repealed....do we really think that companies are going to decrease their prices?? They learned how much people are willing to pay and they'll try to just earn an extra 25% just because they can
Not that this takes away from your point - but the 25% uplift wouldn't be to retail pricing but to cost pricing. So while this is still not great news, the numbers won't be quite as stark as your examples I think.
Hopefully this should not turn into a major issue in the long term. Whilst a lot of gpus are currently manufactured in China many more are manufactured outside of China in Taiwan. In addition its likely that if Tariffs stay long term this would encourage manufacturing to move to other competing countries like India, Vietnam, Indonesia etc. where the tariffs are not going to be in place which would then hopefully bring prices back down.
4070 Super here in Sweden was down to the equivalent of ~$678 last week (it went on sale) but went up again to ~$735 so these new US prices are what we've been dealing with for a long time. It blows my mind US folks were getting a 4070S for $600, on Reddit I read one guy getting one for like $450 or something which is fucking insane. Our prices suck though and I think new GPU consumption has either stagnated or declined because of them. The price to performance ratios are just so terrible. I'm buying a new 4070S soon but I'm on a GTX 1080 so I'll be jumping like 3 generations.
Brazil is going through this for a long time, welcome to the club, we used to be able to buy used products from aliexpress, now we pay 92% import tax on every product that exceds 50$ and 17% on everything below 50$, Sellers have some discounts, so this applies only if you import the product yourself, but again thanks to those taxes imported products are expensive in general, a 4090 is around 2800 US$ here, a 3060 is sitting around 325$, RX 6600 is the cheapest actual option here sitting around 250$ so we are kinda used to this stuff, its funny how the US could possibly do this just to try and hit china's economy even tho MOST of US companies have been assembling on china and taiwan for a while
@@ffwast And now you CANT unless you want to spend 2X the amount. But I know, your goung to wait for the 6000 series Nvidia and the 9000 series AMD, because those will be cheaper! 🤣
It is important to note that the tariff is charged on the price the importer pays and not the final retail price so you can't just multiply the MSRP by 25%. The Tariff will still be painful since margins for graphics cards and most electronics goods are pretty low meaning that the tariff will still be pretty significant.
In addition to this situation, I'm curious how the US govern will treat the 50 series cards and beyond, with respect to "supercomputer" potential for nuke modeling and such, like they did restricting 4090's. Every gen will get stronger, so if the US is trying to keep that processing power out of China's hands, then what will they do?
You absolutely cannot predict Nvidia prices based off of past trends. They flat out said the high prices are here to stay, so don't expect the horrible launch prices of the 40 series to be corrected with the 50, it was already going to be the same, if not worse *before* any additional reasons for a price hike.
Tariffs: The only way greedy companies like NVidia (and their supplier TSMC) can be encouraged to manufacture their devices in non-adversarial countries.
In Norway we already have a 25% tariff and always had. So Rtx 4080 super here is like 1220-1300 USD already so I doubt we Get double tariff and the price/perf would increase more in countries with tariffs already. Rtx 4070 super is also 750-850 usd here already.
Thats just the US, right? So I guess as a Canadian it wont effect me. We already pay a bunch for stuff if it ships from out of country directly to us in duties etc. Which I assume happens to vendors too, and accounts for why even after currency conversion, things are still a bit more expensive here. Now things are just catching up.
We've been suffering this in the UK for years now, I remember buying parts when the pound was 2x the strength of the Doller, but the parts price was £1 to $1, an example of this was the FX CPUs.... say it was $180 for the FX8150 back in 2010/11, over in the UK we were paying £199... yet at the time the pound was £1 - $1.5ish The most recent example RX7900XTX $999, over in the UK £1300
While it was tough for me to stomach $1k for my 4080 Super, it was a worthy upgrade from my 3070. And I'm now glad I upgraded this gen instead of 'tik-toking' like usual.
Tariffs like this one (where there is no domestic competitor) just hurt the consumer and pad the pockets of the government. It doesn't hurt the Chinese, because there really isn't any alternative. It's dumb.

@@fafski1199 well take a guess at what's about to happen

Not necessarily. EU prices are listed with taxes included, whereas US prices are listed without tax. When you purchase in the US, tax is added at the point of sale. Sales and property taxes are also increasing daily here in the US. Lastly, since NVIDIA is greedy, they're likely to increase their prices even MORE for people in Europe (sadly) making Europe probably the worst market for GPUs. Gamers in both America and Europe have to pray this does not happen because it will be a neverending trend of price increases, eventually causing people to stop PC gaming.

This most likely will mean an even higher cost then just a 15% + whatever markup cost the retailer has would be in the first place.

he advice here has some good points but also some drawbacks to consider:
Upsides:
Save Money: Upgrading less frequently and waiting for deals can definitely save you cash on expensive graphics cards.
Environmentally Friendly: Upgrading less is better for the environment as it reduces e-waste.
Broaden Your Horizons: Taking a break from gaming and exploring new hobbies like sports, music, or languages can be enriching.
Downsides:
Outdated Performance: Waiting 4-5 years for upgrades might leave you with a PC that struggles with newer games.
Limited Options: Waiting for deals can restrict your choices, as you might miss out on the latest features.
Shifting Priorities: Not everyone wants to replace gaming with other activities. Some people genuinely enjoy PC gaming as their hobby.
Here's a more balanced approach:
Research: Identify the performance level you need for your desired games.
Console Alternatives:
Steam Deck: This is a valid option for portable PC gaming, but it might not have the power of a high-end graphics card.
Ultimately, the best approach depends on your individual needs and priorities. Don't feel pressured to abandon gaming altogether, but explore ways to be strategic with your upgrades and potentially save money.

You said doody! 🤣😂🤣

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. On the one hand they could move assembly to say Taiwan, Vietnam, or Mexico and avoid the tariff. On the other hand if all GPUs are made in China, then every manufacturer is equally affected which means there isn't a strong incentive that would force that move.
Its the same like with the fuel prices. Canada and EU has more expensive fuel yet I always hear someone from US moaning about it.
Lets say the tariffs go through, prices are increased for consumers, and then next year the tariffs are repealed....do we really think that companies are going to decrease their prices?? They learned how much people are willing to pay and they'll try to just earn an extra 25% just because they can

Hopefully this should not turn into a major issue in the long term. Whilst a lot of gpus are currently manufactured in China many more are manufactured outside of China in Taiwan.
