      Just finished inventory 1/2hr ago. I'm optimistic I can get the tail done before Christmas, and start knocking out numerous other subassemblies. Hoping to have wings done and rear fuselage started by spring.

      @@SoloRenegade how's your build coming? Do you have build experience or did you just decide to pull the trigger and get it done?

    • @SoloRenegade
      @SoloRenegade Год назад

      @@billiondollardan I had no prior building experience. But I am a Mechanical and Aerospace Engineer, started as a Mechanical Drafter, dual rated CFII in airplanes and helicopters, and design riveted shtmtl structures and enclosures, power systems, cooling systems, etc. at my current job. So to say I had no idea what I was getting myself into would be an understatement. I'm also working on designing an airplane of my own from scratch.
      I just pulled the trigger and decided to get it done. I do presently own a Cessna 150 though.
      I'm presently only 22hrs of build time into my Onex. The horizontal and vertical tail are all but finished (just holding off on the final rivets of the skin until I get it aligned to the tailcone first), the main landing gear is basically done. The entire tailcone is nearly finished (from the rear of the cockpit to the rudder). It goes together so easy. I'm already thinking about my next build, possibly a scratchbuild from plans such as a Pietenpol, Thatcher CX, or maybe another kit like an RV-7.
      Once the tailcone is done I'll build the forward fuselage, then assemble the fuselage and main gear in preparation for the engine (which I've already ordered). Then I can work on the Center wing section and the outer wing sections.
      only adding things like nav/strobe lights. But I plan to do some experiments with it later. simple things just to test some aerodynamics ideas and such. I'm keeping mine simple. no complex avionics, no autopilot, none of all the crap people needlessly overload their planes with that only adds weight/cost.

      @@LeanofPeakAviation ok thanks for the advice. About the plane what is the average takeoff roll? The wing looks kinda small so what's it like on grass?

    • @LeanofPeakAviation
      @LeanofPeakAviation  Год назад +1

      @@excellenceinanimation960 You know despite the short wing…the wing loading is pretty light. It only weights 600lbs empty. What makes the takeoff roll fairly long is how close to the ground the wing is. On a standard day it’s about a 900ft takeoff on pavement, 1500 on grass. In the heat of the summer it can be 1500 on pavement and 2500 on grass. It’s definitely not a STOL plane. That being said it has a low stall speed of 40mph which makes for a short landing. You could stop it in 300 feet on grass…you just can’t takeoff like that. I routinely flew in and out of a gliderport with the plane in the winter and that was a 2500 foot grass field. It handles nicely on grass. Over 80 degrees I wouldn’t go to that particular field, it’s too short.

  • @mhutch7551

    Have you noticed a takeoff performance increase as alluded to in previous video with the factory tailwheel? If there is improvement, how would you differentiate between the fix you made and the density altitude bonus we get this time of year?

    • @LeanofPeakAviation
      @LeanofPeakAviation  Год назад +1

      The actual liftoff performance was about as expected previously…I didn’t see a huge improvement in leaving the ground. What I DID notice was for the first time ever the tailwheel picked itself off the ground. Generally I let the stick pressure take the stick forward as I’m building speed, I don’t try to force a tail-low takeoff…but usually the plane leaves the ground in a three point position. If you look carefully in this last video the tail comes off the ground before takeoff…just a little…probably the 2” I subtracted from the larger wheel…so the tail was actually flying at takeoff and I felt like the takeoff was very very smooth.

    First time viewer, so I apologize in advance if the question has already been asked and answered.
    The folding wings are what has me drawn to the Onex. Do you utilize that feature or not? I would guess that if I was a single occupant hanger that I would leave them down and locked.

    • @LeanofPeakAviation
      @LeanofPeakAviation  Год назад +2

      I use them every time I fly. The design is genius. Takes literally 5 seconds to put them up or down. Once my hangar mate sells his plane I’ll likely keep them down and locked.

    • @SoloRenegade
      @SoloRenegade Год назад +1

      I bought a Onex for a second plane, because of the folding wing. Can keep both of my airplanes in the same hangar at the same time, same as he's doing. If one is down for maintenance, I can fly the other. And if I sell one to make space for another, I'll never be without an airplane.
