    I'd love an ingredient science video! Not only on isopropyl alcohol, but on many ingredients! I do think it'd be a fairly long video if you talk about the good and the bad ingredients and what they do, but I think it'd be super helpful 😊 I really would like to learn ingredients better by looking at the lists. Maybe a video on the bad and a separate on the good and how they affect the hair? Love your videos always 💖

    I love this technique for summer, it really reduces the amount of frizz that I get in humidity. Thanks for a great demonstration! This also works well for people like me who wash their hair in the evening and like to sleep in the crunch. I put it up in a satin bonnet and most of the crunch has been scrunched out by morning but I still have pretty waves and curls.

    Thank you so much for doing a video using drugstore products. I don't have much money to spend, but that doesn't mean that I don't want to take better care of my hair. Please do more drugstore videos/affordable product videos. I'm having a hard time finding products myself from the drugstore that are effective yet silicone free, sulphate free and alcohol free. Also, it would be awesome if you could talk about hair and hard water. I think that's where I have to start with my healthier hair routine. We have hard water and it's wreaking havoc on my hair. I feel that if I want to take care of my hair, that's step one and one of the most important things that I can do, if I want my products to work as they are intended to. Sorry that I kind of changed the subject from what your video is about lol. I've been binging your channel lately. I feel like you're literally the best hair channel on RUclips. I've been enjoying learning from you and getting to know you better as well. Have a great weekend!! 💜

      You could try finding a chelating shampoo to help with the hard water. Or, I'm also having a lot of success using an apple cider vinegar rinse every few weeks to deal with my hard water situation.

    Yes, I have tons of products, some that I'm going back to because I tried them early in my journey and was disappointed in the results. Now that I'm easing into a routine and embracing what my hair is instead of what I wish it was, I'm getting better results. And yes, I like sister products too lol.
    All of that being said, I'm going to try this with the myriad of gels that I have on my next wash day... maybe today!

I have to say that one of the things that makes me always come back to your videos as opposed to binge watching others, which is not to say the others aren't helpful, but part of it is your personality and part of it is that you know the science so well. New subscriber, but long-time curly girl journey traveler- your videos have given me so much renewed hope/interest/determination to embrace my curls and make them as healthy as possible. My hair suddenly became curly when I was in middle school- an awkward time for us all, but made especially cringe-worthy when a girl who had pin-straight hair suddenly found curls she didn't know how to take care of sprouting from her head! (I wish I could burn ALL the pictures.) And it's been decades now of curly hair and I do love it, but gosh it's a lot of work! I have little cousins now with curls like me and it's so fun to see the excitement when they realize their hair is like mine (my grandmother, the originator of the curls, is thrilled that we're taking over the gene pool). Thank you, thank you, thank you, for reminding me that my curls aren't just about removing the frizz and getting the shine, but also about sincerely caring for my hair and that if my goal is to make it healthy, the frizz and shine will sort itself out.

    Hi, curl friend!! Your results were fabulous!! 100% need the video discussing drying alcohols. That was one of the first rules I decided wasn't all that important for me. I have my reasons, and I'd love to hear yours and the science!! 👩‍🔬🔬🧫

    • @VengefulAngeI
      @VengefulAngeI 2 года назад +1

      Often times it's used in order to be able to add other ingredients into certain solutions/formulas. Products that have Behentrimonium Chloride, for example, will often use isopropyl alcohol in order to get that ingredient into the formula. But the amount is so small & it's heated up in the process so that means it's mostly "burned" out of the product. I saw a cosmetic chemist on here say that a LOT of companies will leave the alcohol off of the ingredient list when it's used in this manner, (and the ingredient I mentioned above pretty much requires the use of alcohol, as do others), since the end product virtually has no alcohol left. I just used the Confixor gel from Aveda last night, & it has "drying" alcohol in it & my hair feels great!

I feel like they are often formulated to work with each other. I know this isn’t always true…but so far it’s worked for me. You have really helped me embrace my natural hair in the last few years, and I have enjoyed your suggestions for other curlies/wavies to watch!

    • @palestar828
      @palestar828 2 года назад

      The main reason why they originally sell shampoo and conditioner in sets, is that the company's know that the you need sulphates in order to remove silicones. Sulphates are what makes a shampoo "suds" up and clean your hair. Silicones in a conditioner build up in your hair and the only way to remove silicones, is by using sulphates (which you would need the shampoo to remove). So that's exactly why a company sells shampoo and conditioner in a set to be used together/why you would believe that they are formulated to "work together". That's the original reason why they were made in sets, anyways... I've gotten shampoo and conditioner together and if you read the ingredients of each, sometimes they are even the SAME or not that much different at all so it could also be trick that a company uses to make you think that they work together or that you need to purchase them together in order for them to work to their fullest potential. And then you find out that's not the truth at all and they we're using a ploy to trick you, just for them to make money! 🤦
      Thank God that they make shampoo and conditioner sulphate and silicone free these days. so now you have the option to not buy them in a set because if the conditioner no longer contains a silicone that builds up in your hair, then technically, you don't really need the shampoo in a set which would normally contain the sulphates to remove those silicones. I focus more on cowash/conditioners than I do shampoos. I believe that shampoos are stripping. I still use them every now and then, just not as much now. I feel like it makes my hair healthier when shampooing less...but of course you should always stick with the best method that works for YOU!!! Sometimes it's all about trial and error as well.

    Yeah, I think I need to try this. My hair is wavy with a few big very loose curls and one gel alone will only hold the curl on wash day. By the next day my waves and curls are almost gone. I have to re-wet and re-style my hair every day in order to keep the curls/waves. I really don't enjoy that as it is way too time consuming. So I will try this method and see if that helps! Thanks for this info Courtney! I also love sister products too :)

The last count before I added my innersense collection was just under £2000 😆😆😆I had them all on a huge shelf all stood up neat but every time I tried to pick one out they all tipped so I got rid of a ton and what was left I spent 3 hours sorting them out into baskets ie cowashes, conditioners, gels, foams and mousses, treatments etc etc and Innersense which has a whole basket to its self because it's pretty all I've been using since last year. I occasionally reach for the odd product like today I reached for a mousse and flora and curl gel instead of ICL and ICH/ICV for a refresh and got the most amazing cast which clapped out into tight springy curls so I may start using some of my other products now that I've got my hair back to full health

I bought the Maui Curl Quencher Ultra Hold in the hope it would be hydrating AND nice hold, but that didn't happen. It's like the $1.98 yellow gel you used...where it just went away! If my hair has too much moisture I won't get much of a cast - & by moisture I mean water and/or products. I've also found that my curls get pulled out a bit & weighed down by that much water, since the curl cream & gel will help to hold the water in. My curls are so finicky about water. I need it to be wetter than just damp, but much less wet than sopping, soaking, just dunked my head in the pool wet lol. If it's even sightly dripping I have to remove some water. But once it gets to where it's looking like It's even just starting to dry, then it needs more water🤦🏽‍♀️😂

    I want to thank you for this video so much I learned so much I didn't use the 123 get technique but I learned why I could never get good wave clumps all I needed was soaking soaking wet hair like you said and I learned why I hated gel so much I could never get the cast out I switched to mouse but now I'm back to gel all I needed was to put it in soaking soaking wet hair I also learned in one of your other videos that I was using my curlsmith souffle wrong I was just putting in my hair I didn't add water to the souffle and rubbing in hand that made a big difference I've been transitioning since June and could never get my back top layer to wave and my waves were all over the place having bad hair days since I started but you changed all that for me thank you so much now if only I could get rid of the frizz but again thank you I say know that I know what to do with my hair it will finally transition fully can't wait to see my hair in a few months after using what I learned 🤗🤗🤗🤗

    I have tried this before but not on soaking wet hair as I often brush style standing up. I may have to give it a try.
    I found the Cantu gel caused flag drying and I often microplop as when I wet plop or plop my products get on my scalp, my hair is low density and more so on the top of my head, also fine hair.

    For layering products here are a few combos I love (I wish I loved more affordable products but my bleach damaged hair ☹️ needs TLC and high quality ingredients) also, right now I only have one strong hold gel that I love
    Combo A- 1. Living Proof Curl Definer
    2. Curlsmith Hydro Style Flexi Jelly
    3. Curlsmith Shine ✨ Strong hold gel
    Combo B.
    1. Soultanicals Frizz Whizz
    2. Aveda Nutri Plenish Curl Gelee
    3. Curlsmith Shine ✨ Strong hold gel
    Combo C.
    1. just a tiny bit of the Living Proof Curl Definer (when I use Orange Marmalade, I must be very light handed with other moisturizing products)
    2. Orange Marmalade
    3. Bounce Curl Light Crème Gel
    4. Curlsmith Shine ✨ Strong hold gel
    (the Bounce Curl Avocado and Rose Oil Clump and Define Cream is also Fantastic as a base for this combo ❤️)
    I plop before I apply my strong hold gel.

    Oh wow I could never Courtney. My hair really dislikes gel. I tried a new method on my hair that I like to call the CCC method😅. Inspired by your 123 gel. Cream leave in and 2 cream stylers 🙌🏽. My hair loves the cream and is so shiny and moisturized all the way threw to day 4.

    Your video just popped out on my home page and I’m glad it did. I think I’m going to give this a try. I just found out that I actually have wavy hair instead of straight hair last year. I’ve tried mousse, cream and spray but I haven’t tried gel products. I hate how my hair feel when I use those products, it feels heavy and and greasy and I feel like my hair is dirty. The waves don’t last long too, it gets weighed down and looks almost straight after a while. My hair isn’t thick at all, I don’t have much hair. I have fine hair and it gets oily super fast usually in a few hours after washing. Anyone here with the similar hair texture as mine could share your tips and tricks please? I really want to wear my hair naturally. Thanks in advance if anyone sees this.

      Sounds like I'm in almost the exact same boat but I realized the waviness only a month or so ago. I recently used a gel that created more definition. Last wash day, realized I ran out of it and only used mousse. My hair looked practically straight! I'm a baby in this whole process right now, still learning a lot so I don't have any advice but I'm right there with you! I'm nervous about trying the 123 gel method. I'm imagining it really weighing down my easily weighed down hair 😬

    I definitely want to try this once I have both arms working again. I've gotten a pretty good results from the Aussie gel, but I still always have frizz, and I think also the Aussie gel maybe makes my scalp itch? Anyone else have trouble with that? I'm a little bit afraid to try this, though, because unlike you, I have very thin hair. It's fine, and also nowhere near as thick as it was back in my 20s and 30s. I'm really worried that I'm going to end up with stringy hair that looks super greasy and has no volume at all.

    • @karenn993
      @karenn993 2 года назад

      I'm in the same boat as you, and know without even trying this method that my fine, thin hair would be overwhelmed. I use at least 3 stylers every time I style, but only small amounts of each. I do use the Aussie gel, and don't have issues with itchiness, but it does build up on my hair. The use of a leave in conditioner might alleviate some of the stringiness, but I can't tolerate leave ins as they weigh my hair down.

    • @alysonknop8395
      @alysonknop8395 2 года назад +1

      @@karenn993 What I've found works best with my hair, but doesn't get rid of a frizzy halo, is using the Suave Professionals Natural hair shampoo, either the Cantu conditioner (these Courtney recommended in a drugstore favorites vid) or the Jessicurl deep conditioner (and I can have my best results if I clarify with the Neutrogena anti residue shampoo once a week and then deep condition), then I use the LUS 3-in-1 for wavy hair--soaking wet hair and maybe 4-5 small pumps' worth, just enough so I can feel it on my hair when I squish to condish. Then I use a bit of the Aussie gel and scrunch it in. Even without diffusing, I get pretty good curls, just more frizz than I'd like. My biggest issue is that starting about 12 years ago, after I began coloring my hair cuz I missed having red hair, my hair started breaking off, and it never grew longer again. So I have this area on my head that looks nearly bald. I've finally decided to let my hair go back to the current mousy brown to see if I can heal my hair. Anyway, just thought I'd describe what I do. I do find the LUS 3-in-1 doesn't weigh my hair down but does provide some definition.

    How does LA Looks Extreme Sport (blue) gel rate against Aussie Instant Freeze in terms of hold? Never tried Aussie. Used LA Looks for years. Recently added Cantu. They both have benefits & I think combined will be great. Going to pick up Aussie but not sure whether to use it 1st or 2nd. Will use Cantu 3rd.

    I'm enjoying your videos and am just starting in my journey. But I have a question. You said you needed to ensure you got rid of product buildup prior to using the the gels. However you only wash your scalp. How does that get rid of buildup on the rest of your hair? Isn't that where all the product from recent styling is? Thanks in advance!

    • @niennaserena4057
      @niennaserena4057 2 года назад

      Pulling the lather through your hair helps. If the lengths of your hair are really dirty or full of product, scrunch your hair while rinsing, sort of like squish to condish but with shampoo. This might help get rid of more stubborn product build up on your hair without drying your hair too much. Hope this helps!

    What I’ve noticed with my own hair, if my hair is too wet, I don’t get a cast at all with gel. So I think that’s why you probably never get a cast. But I also watch you enough to know that you prefer to style on sopping wet hair. So i guess it’s con we just have to live with 😂

    Man am I getting frustrated with my hair. I'm still early on in my curly routine. I used to straighten the heck out of it every single day but in recent years, it has become naturally wavy so I'm trying to work with it. I use a single product in it and it gets greasy. I don't know how to get it to hold the wave/curl without being greasy and weighed down. I see people using 3+ products and the end result is fantastic. If I did that, it would look like I haven't washed my hair in a month.

I thought this happened because I used a cheap Garnier gel so I invested in what, for me, is an expensive gel: the curlylove one. But it still happens. I tried using less quantity, more quantity, damp styling, wet styling...nothing worked. Do you have any advice for this problem?
