From what I know today and if I was young again, I would immigrate to Alaska in a heartbeat! I'm no stranger to cold and snow living in Northern Ontario Canada all my life.
We use to move the hives into the greenhouse for the winter to shelter them from the lake effect snow and cold winds. It was a common thing to lose 1/2 or more of the hives until we started wintering over in the greenhouse.
I love that idea. There's an old guy in Nebraska who can grow citrus fruit in his greenhouse. His has an underground greenhouse that takes the environment to zone 8 which is in Florida and south Texas. These kids setup should be at least 15 to 20 degrees warmer than the outside temperatures. I think you have solved their problem. Vaughn
9:02 - chicken walks out side, wind blows, "Oh H__L no" and runs back into the coop. :) What's the temp, lots of snow but you look like it isn't terribly cold out.
I know I chuckled with that chicken doing that too....I loved the dog sitting in the back of the truck too...he was I will just be here in case you need me.
Burrrrr. Makes me cold watching it. Exactly why we moved to the southeastern United States. Suppose to be in the 70's next week.. Love you two. Keep living the dream!
You guys are living my dream. And I get to live vicariously through you. I'm so happy for you that you are able to live this lifestyle. Some of it is going to be learning by trial and error but so far so good I say. Maybe you could build some sort of shelter for the bees for the winter so they don't get covered with snow. The greenhouse idea is a good one too.
When I think about all the two of you have accomplished in the relatively short time you have lived in Alaska, I'm so impressed! Wondering what all is in store for the upcoming year.
opening hives in winter too often and for too long may cause it, very sensitive to cold, most likely they freezed When opened it's hard for them to restore ambient temperature, basically they are burning sugar to produce heat Once we killed 30 out 100 hives when started without experience...
Snowshoes would be a sound investment imo. Also the snow you cleared off the hives earlier in the year would have acted as extra insulation in the extremely cold months.
Am a beekeeper too. I was able to give two of my hives an inspection yesterday. Thankfully both fine , stores, brood , and bees galore. I am in the UK so don't suffer the extremes in weather that yours do. But I lost my strongest hive towards the end of December beginning of Jan. I suspect varroa caused mine to die although I did treat with oxalic acid vapor. Good luck with the new bees . Try to get local bees they will do better.
Start saving your wood ashes and spread them on the garden rows. It will melt the snow on sunny days real quick and it will also fertilize. Next winter get some straw bales and stack them around your hives. The insulation value is awesome once snow covers them. Obviously leave an entrance hole for the bees. Great vid.
snowblowers are great when it dumps like this, stock up on things you need state of emergancy declared in anchorage yesterday, spring is coming be happy great video as always.
Watching you guys crawl through the snow brought me so many giggles! Thanks guys! I live in (MN) so we get a lot of snow but not that much! I’ve dreamed of being snowed in with that much snow my whole life:)
If I was trying to over Winter beehives in your situation,I would bring the hives inside your loft upstairs in observation hives next to your window so you can keep them warm, watch their activity, and feed them sugar syrup during the Winter.Maybe build a screen wire cage on the inside of the window with metal disc doors on the hives to open to the wire cage so you could let the bees out to cleanse the hive as needed or possibly crack the window open if the outside temperature gets to 50F. Good luck with the bees in 2020!
Lordy u most definitely got some snow, glad to see u both handling it with great optimism, shoveling snow is fun, but living off grid is and this is part of the work. I really enjoy all of your videos, sry to here about the bees, that's something u will get worked out, great job to both of u hard working people. Take care.
if you want to melt the snow on the garden or the piles around the property, scatter the wood ashes from the stove on top of it. the sun will melt dark ashes a lot faster than white snow.
When we were little my mum made Snow Ice Cream for us after a good fresh snowfall. I made it for my children and grandchildren. It is magical and delicious! Gather a medium bowl of fresh, clean snow. to it add a tsp. of vanilla extract, a fourth to three fourth cup of sugar depending on how sweet you like it, and then slowly add in some evaporated milk, or in your case, Kefir--but not too much at once. Stir until it has the texture of snow and eat!
Snow plowing to clear sheds and roads for you guys is like the painters on the Sydney Harbor Bridge :-) its never ending once the painters in Sydney get to the end they have to go back and start again exactly like the snow in Alaska... After my dad passed way back in the 60's my Mother realized that where we lived had nothing to offer she decided we to leave we had 2 choices the North America continent or Australia and as someone that was born in snow and up to the age of 15 I am sorta glad we came to the land of Oz where snow is extremely rare unless we go to the mountains !!
Next winter you guys should use the snow machine to cut a path out to your bees. That way you'll have a firm path to walk out to. Great videos and content. You two are amazing couple.
Put snow shoes on the pup, and you stand at one end of the hive path and Eric stand at the other end of the path, and the two of you keep calling the pup back and forth, the pup will have it packed down in no time flat, LOL
make a lean too over bee hives about 6' tall and have side walls about half way up to keep snow form encasing them and they can come and go as the please. That way they will have shade in summer too.
Wow you've got a lot more snow than we did up here in Fairbanks. Love the videos! I've sent so many people to your channel. I work at lowes at the pro desk. I've had a lot of customers say they have got their ideas from your channel. I'll be braking ground next month and stepping off on my own off grid adventure at the end of July. Look forward to you videos!!
This will pass, winter's "Last kick at the can " -20 in Alberta today, that will pass this weekend . Stay well , and take care, Spring is Near ! ( I hope ) lol.
Here in Buffalo 42 now. We’ve had a really mild winter this year. And the lake really didn’t do any freezing. So we were really lucky not to get any bad weather from going across there. Thank you for showing your cat. Please show more of your cats. You guys take care!
Maybe this is too honest but here goes!! After watching you two just living a day in your life, I just really crave someone to just " be" with. Envy your life! God bless!
4:53!! The Dr Seuss house (with Denali in the background)! Nice snow day...you both sure have the right attitude. Everything is work, even just getting a jar from the cupboard could mean putting on the snowpacks and heading outside to the cellar.
Wow, you've had a lot of fresh snow in the past few hours. It's great how you two are helping each other and dealing with the definitely tough life in this rough country. Your videos are awesome, I'm really glad I found your channel☘️🤩💫👍
I think you guys should build a small building over the opening of your root cellar. Here is a video of Dr Leo on bees and also horizontal hives. I have seen him on other channels so you might be able to contact him dot get his input on bee's in Alaska. I think you will find him a wealth of knowledge on Bee keeping. Loved the video as always. Thought is was funny how the chicken was coming out until the snow blew on her and then she turned and ran back in. How far do you have to go to get your milk?
Guys, have you tried tapping birches for sap? I know a lot of people drink it as it is but you can also make syrup. Looks like there's lot of birches around...
Bees: Need a sustained metabolic fuel source which IS their heating system. Strategic placement of the fuel within the hive in order to ensure its accessability and usability is vital. Mitigate the rapid loss of this heat during bouts with extremely cold temperature conditions by aiding them with enhanced insulation. Use ground heat.
In like a Lion out like a lamb they say...we didn't get any snow this year. Sorry about your bees, my father kept bees in Fairbanks...it gets cold there. But I don't remember if he over wintered them. The snow is beautiful! I miss Alaska! Thank you for sharing your journey.
Nice to see the channel again. Please invest in shoe shoes for next year. Thats a lot of snow. Glad to see you are getting sunlight back. Looking forward to gardening videos.
I remember in the 90s, went to a cabin near Talkeetna For a week, and shoveling out the stove pipe and then a path down to the door... Was at least 10-12’ deep.
So sorry about the bees! Maybe they need a winter shelter like the greenhouse, like with double-sided walls. I saw a youtube video of a double-sided hoop house for covering a raised bed garden. It could be lifted up on hinges. Basically a hoop within a hoop.
Thanks for the share - I had been wondering how your bees were doing in the last few episodes.. I'm sorry you lost them, but it'll be good to try again. Oh, and I have to add, even tho not in this video - I've never known that chickens would eat meat or peck at carcasses! My mom either - I've shown some of your videos to her, which she has liked, but we've never seen that before! Amazing!
just moved to Wasilla from Colorado. . Your channel was very helpful and inspirational in my decision to chase my dreams in Alaska. Thank you. And happy spring
Everything looks so beautiful all decked out in white. You’ve definitely had a lot more snow than we have in lower Michigan. You two are doing an amazing job. I really enjoy your content

there is something that is so peaceful watching you do all the daily stuff you do....would LOVE a how to on cooking beans, that looked delish!, sorry about the bees, but I guess its all trial and error, til it works....great that you are continuing to keep them.....its so important, and something us city dwellers never even think twice about really, at least until we try to grow our own food =) stay warm! =)
Lord love a duck! That was one heck of a dump of snow and crazy amount out to the bees! Sorry to hear about the bees. I watch another channel called Little Mountain Ranch and she has bees and she started them not that long ago and also has some very frigid weather temps and is having success so you might enjoy her bee vlogs. The mountains look incredible; such beautiful scenery. And that stew looked delicious! Did your pup have a hard time following you out to the hives? They love to be anywhere you are!
The snow may not be so beautiful for you, but it sure looks nice in your video! Hopefully it will soon begin to melt so you are able to start your garden! It's difficult to realialize you started with more than twice the wood you currently have! At -30 F. obviously requires a LOT of wood to keep you warm! Here I was thinking you might not need to cut more wood for next winter. ☹ Very sorry to hear the bees didn't make it through the winter. Hopefully you'll figure out the problem and be able to address it better next winter. Life is a learning curve and disappointments are sure to happen, especially at the pace you two have grown!
The advantage of snow is milder temperature. Another is it's a great insulator against the cold air. Plus isn't mother nature beautiful in her white coat? Great moose shot - congrats!
probably ur going to have to put them in a storage place for them,so they dont suffacate under all the snow u guys get.and that will also be a wind break for them too.
You guys are great. I watch every video. I would love to live that lifestyle. But I'm glad I can live it through you. Keep God in your life. God bless you.
Too bad about the bees. Could you put the hives in the hi-tunnel in the winter to keep them a little warmer? Or wouldn't the temps be much warmer in there? Thanks for sharing!!
Ive seen other channels move their hives into a lean too type shed that's open on one side and they do good and that's here in the states where it's not near as cold for as long as you get. Just a thought.
You can take the leg off of a old pair of jeans and put handles on it like a purse and it makes a great wood carrier. Help save your arms and shoulders.
That bean recipe looks pretty tasty. Hint, hint. Sorry about your bees. Hang in there. Did your return trip from the race go OK? That storm was a biggie. I was caught out in the Utes years ago. Three days and four nights in my camper. Stay strong.
Put a piece of wood over the entrance to the bees building a little tunnel. This prevent the entrance to be filled with snow. Also never ever open them in the winter, not even for a second. Don’t touch the beehive to remove snow. This can make the bees close in on the queen and kill her accidentally.
That moment when that lone chicken ventured out in the blowing snow, and was like "oh HELL no" and rushed back in 😂😂😂😂
That was hilarious! Couldn't get back inside soon enough!
I love how the two of you share in all the chores. I hope you always take care of each other with passion and zeal as you age.
completely getting ready to comment this myself, partnership takes 100%/100%, not 50%/50%, and these two share the workload evenly it seems!

You've convinced me to never think about moving to Alaska. I need to mow the lawn today.
Ditto
From what I know today and if I was young again, I would immigrate to Alaska in a heartbeat! I'm no stranger to cold and snow living in Northern Ontario Canada all my life.
@@frederickmoller dito.
Frederick Moller , yes. And Southeast Alaska looks like it has very mild winters too, so ther is always that.
😂

I was thinking along those lines. Just too cold not having additional protection around the hives.
9:02 - chicken walks out side, wind blows, "Oh H__L no" and runs back into the coop. :)
What's the temp, lots of snow but you look like it isn't terribly cold out.
Yes!!! I was wondering if anyone noticed that!!! Hahahah
I know I chuckled with that chicken doing that too....I loved the dog sitting in the back of the truck too...he was I will just be here in case you need me.
I noticed, funny 🤣
A P I was just going to comment on that!!! I was LMAO at the look on that chickens face!!
Right?!? I noticed that too! What a riot!

Oh no! Sorry to hear about the bees! Really hope the new hives will do really well when they get here!

make sure the bees are fron your area. or move them into your green house in the winter.
I cannot get over how beautiful Alaska is. The mountains at 4:50 in the video are amazing!
Loved watching you guys and treading through the snow. It sure gets tiring. So very sad about the bees. Hope you have better luck this year.

The food looks so good and hearty after trudging through all that snow and all that hard work.
Maybe just a small version of a high tunnel over the bees in the extreme weather.
4:53!! The Dr Seuss house (with Denali in the background)! Nice snow day...you both sure have the right attitude. Everything is work, even just getting a jar from the cupboard could mean putting on the snowpacks and heading outside to the cellar.
That soooooooo tickled me when the chicken flew back into the coop because of the blowing snow.
Yes, I chuckled at that too!

So sorry for your bees. Very sad. But hope is the best motivator!! Keep it up!!
Thank You for Your Bee Tranperancy It Is Truly Refreshing
Lots of snow for sure!..mmm pretty tasty looking stew! Great video.
So sorry about the bees! Maybe they need a winter shelter like the greenhouse, like with double-sided walls. I saw a youtube video of a double-sided hoop house for covering a raised bed garden. It could be lifted up on hinges. Basically a hoop within a hoop.
Wow! You'll be up to your hips in mud when all that snow melts! So sorry to hear about the bees.

Everything looks so beautiful all decked out in white. You’ve definitely had a lot more snow than we have in lower Michigan. You two are doing an amazing job. I really enjoy your content
beautiful ! thanks for sharing
So happy to see a new video. Wow ! Lots of snow! Lots of rain here in Virginia Beach, VA. What a difference in daily living. Y'all are awesome.
I'm so sorry about your bees, don't give up, you will succeed. Bee's are an integral part of homesteading. I just love watching your videos, your successes and your failures, it's what makes you real.
Thanks so much for all that you put into them,

Spring is just around the corner!! Thanks for sharing!
Wow that’s a bummer well just to try try again good luck on the next beehives
found another missed video and to know where Ya'll have advanced Simple Living Alaska!
She is very passionate about them and has really good knowledge understanding their little minds :) I love the broody hens. That means you have very happy girls.
So sad about the bees. But it happens everywhere not just Alaska.
Once again, great video.. here in Pennsylvania we went from fall into spring no real winter to speak of... now the daffodils are blooming and it is time to start seedlings.
Hey Erick for the freezing water line get some of that electiic gutter heating tape and tape it to the water line plug it in to thaw as needed
Sorry to hear about the bees 🐝 i am sure you have thought about this but could you build a peaked roof over the top that could help keep the snow off over winter ❄️ similar to the chook house with the lean too on the outside for them in winter? Looking forward seeing how the new crop of bees settle in 😊
Dinner looks awesome! Hope it warms up soon.
Gorgeous videography,wildlife, scenery.
I love seeing the chickens! Hope you're having a good day!
May I suggest a Woodox firewood sling. . I got mine from Lehman’s . It goes ove one shoulder and makes it easier and more stable to walk. It even has a slot for a flashlight just in case you need to make a firewood run in the dark.
Sorry to hear about the bees. That really sucks.
Your meals always look and sound so good!
awwee too bad about your bees. I am going to my bee yard tomorrow to check on mine. They were still alive a week ago so i am hoping for the best.
YIKES! that's a lot of snow. To bad about the bees. Chickens seem fine and fresh eggs.
The mountains look incredible; such beautiful scenery. And that stew looked delicious! Did your pup have a hard time following you out to the hives? They love to be anywhere you are!
You guys should use the snowblower to make a path to the bee hives.
Very sorry to hear the bees didn't make it through the winter.
Mercy I was upset when we got a little over 6" of snow. You guys take care. Great video.
probably ur going to have to put them in a storage place for them,so they dont suffacate under all the snow u guys get.and that will also be a wind break for them too.
Uk loves ya vids...
We had not much snow this year.. lots of rain tho .
Keep warm both.. and keep up the great vids :)
You guys need a flame thrower for all that snow. Lots of work in the winter glad you got tractor
Love all the snow. Wish I could live in Alaska
You guys are great. I watch every video. I would love to live that lifestyle. But I'm glad I can live it through you. Keep God in your life. God bless you.
Great video guys, sorry to hear about the bees. Loved the moose shot.
I love how you guys share all the work!
Too bad about the bees.
Could you put the hives in the hi-tunnel in the winter to keep them a little warmer?
Or wouldn't the temps be much warmer in there?

Living the dream folks...
Ive seen other channels move their hives into a lean too type shed that's open on one side and they do good and that's here in the states where it's not near as cold for as long as you get. Just a thought.
Snowshoes or cross country skis would get you out to the bees easier. great videos. greetings from Melbourne Australia.
Watching from the 2nd coldest place on earth. Hope you search and get the location 😍😍
Would be nice to get a tour of the dairy where you get milk.
Now gang that was a huge amount of snow. Certainly not a record but a hell of a lot to remove. Yeah, can’t wait for spring
You can take the leg off of a old pair of jeans and put handles on it like a purse and it makes a great wood carrier. Help save your arms and shoulders.
Appreciate you showing these places I'll never get to see.
Stew looks nice, Warming :-)
