This is why they're my favorite band. This video likely didn't get near everything, because there's SO MUCH to find in the least expected ways. I enjoy just going through songs and finding little reprises and motifs that I didn't realize before, or running into a powerful line I didn't realize was even meaning anything. One lyrical connection I realized was in Is There Anybody Here the line "A devil in the alchemy, a phantom staring back it me, it's you" and A Beginning, "No further phantoms will I see." I'm not even sure if it was intentional, but regardless, the way that A Beginning is about his life ending, him saying he's moved on from these "phantoms" he's seeing is so powerful to me.

I just love that BOTH Vital Vessels Vindicate and His Hands Match is Tongue have two separate lyric reprises at the same freaking time!

Everytime I watch this video I am just always reminded why The Lake and the River is my favorite song by The Dear Hunter.

The Lake And The River is such a banger I can't strip its title of my favorite from act II

I love reprises, Such smart song writing and I wish more bands did them. It makes me more attached to the music somehow. Almost a nostalgic feeling.

Hadn't watched this vid in a while so I got reminded of a few reprises I forgot about as well hahaha. Some of these are super far fetched, especially the chord and rhythm reprises and similar riffs and stuff. I doubt those are intentional on Casey's part. But then again, better for this vid to be overcomplete than potentially missing some things. If you really wanna know some details about what's going on in certain parts of the story, then figuring out what each of these motifs stands for can really help. A lot of times when you read the story and thought "how did they reach that conclusion?" it's because of a certain character motif playing, for example. Super cool stuff! TDH got me into this kind of rock opera music and I've been hunting for reprises and motifs ever since - it's a blessing and a curse for sure 😅

I don't want to think about how much time and effort it took a fan to do this. TDH fans are fanatics'.

And they still missed a few motifs (primarily in the drums). I imagine most of which would really only be caught by other drummers. 😂

As others have said some seem a little far fetched but gotta appreciate the effort that went in to creating the original video.
There's another one out there for just the song 'The March'. Man that one is like the song itself is made up of reprises and callbacks, so good.

Oh nice- we’ll have to check that out too. I didn’t know that existed. That song is jammed with callbacks

I love the musical symbolism of the Melpomene reprise in The Flame. It’s the same arpeggio at the beginning of Melpomene (which is all about Ms Leading and them “reprising” their love affair), but at the end of the flame it’s shifted to a minor arpeggio which is commonly accepted as the “sad” mode in music.. signifying something very sad has happened. The lyrical clues in the song lead us to assume that tPatP kills Ms Leading at the end of The Flame, thus leading Hunter to take his revenge and burn down the Church/the Dime in The Fire. TDH is just on another level.

Oh Sue that reminds me! You should check out FXMLDR live feat. Bluecoats by Thank You Scientist. You guys would probably love that performance based on how you felt about that other Thank You Scientist song

Great video. And all solar powered. Every time I hear someone mention it I think of how it is even possible to get such great production outside with such a massive number of players.

Funny little theory I came up with last night, half asleep, what if there wasn't any more mentions of Ms. Terri's lullaby (sing softly, sing me to the lake...) because Hunter eventually forgot the words? It sounds so sad, but I'm sure he wouldn't remember those little things after all that happened to him

The good news is that with “Act 3: Live” on the horizon you now have a legitimate reason to go back to the first two albums in their live-recorded versions. This is the way.
