This is the ChaChingKing I saw the very first time I was introduced to ur channel… no nonsense, no gimmicky, down to earth realness. I am tearful inside. Thank u so very much for helping us to see an interestingly doable way to get off of the hamster wheel of repetition. I love ur source relations of dignity. This video is a treasure in itself... we can’t thank you enough❣️
Comment's like these are exactly why I do the videos. You have no idea how much I get from you when you take the time to encourage me. Thank you.
A friend of mine told their realtor that I am a reseller. She reached out to me to help clean out a foreclosure that sold. I got hundreds of dollars of inventory just for a couple of hours of sweat equity. It pays to tell people what you do!
That's exactly the kind of contact I was talking about. Good for you!!!
I appreciate this video so much, I started reselling because I'm disabled- I CAN'T hustle most of the time, and it gets kind of overbearing seeing people make EVERY little thing a time crunch. I have moved into being really picky with what I pickup and am slowly working through my massive pile that I've accumulated/been given. I do as much as I can when I can. New Subscriber, thank you for your videos!
We still make what we need to despite far fewer hours. It works for us better this way.
Thanks, Scot. You've brought up some very good points, as always. I especially appreciate the part about reminding ourselves that it's OUR business, and can therefore be run OUR way. Cos I tend to berate myself if I go one day without listing, or only get 2-3 items listed. Then I have to remind myself that it's ok!
I completely understand. I am also my harshest critic.
Excellent advice! Work smarter not harder. I stopped watching videos that scream what's hot selling items on ebay after I realized that item in my store has been sitting for 3 months, suddenly it sells. That's not what's hot! It's a person who happened to like something that sat there for months.
Thank you Scot!
I watched a lot of the BOLO videos when I first retired form the school. The problem wasn't that they weren't accurate. The problem was that "what's selling" is a constantly moving target. What was selling when the video was made may not be selling at all anymore.
@@TheChaChingKing Well said!
Your advice is always so thoughtful and kind to your viewers. You don’t make us feel like we are in a rat race to make a million dollar business. I am recently retired and love selling on eBay as a means of getting extra income. But I also want to enjoy my freedom of being retired. Thank you for show us that it is okay to have fun selling on eBay. Love your very helpful and kind videos.
I truly appreciate the encouragement.
This is why I have focused on video games! It has been amazing! Glad you are saying this brother! Niche is the way to go
You've got to make sure it works for you...no doubt.
Exactly why I volunteer once a week at a local charity thrift store! I have access to the back room.
BINGO! See, that's a win in my book.
Yes! Work smarter, not harder. I'm a caretaker of my mom, too, so I know how challenging it can be. Thank you for your clear-eyed, drama-free advice. ♥
Primary caregivers will never get all the credit they are due. My mother-in-law has been amazing since my father-in-law had a stroke. Just absolutely amazing. But she needs more help, too. Being a caregiver will wear you down.
Thank you for this great and uplifting video! Laser beam focus instead of scatter shot, needed the reminder. Have a blessed day!
I apprecaite that. Thank you.
Thank you for the video. So good that people trust you to offer them fair prices when you get to view/shop early at sales. I call that integrity and you and your wife will have another jewel on your crowns by taking care of your parents/loved ones.
I just love your genuine honesty & integrity… SO inspiring! 🤩 There aren’t many resellers (or people, in general) like you. Really appreciate your videos! Thank you 🙏
I genuinely appreciate the kind words. I feel like there's tons of people more deserving, but I appreciate it just the same.
Abundance mentality over scarcity mentality
100%
You are a man of wisdom and honesty. Thank yiu for the video.
I appreciate that
I recently had a buyer send neutral feedback because there was a tear on the pocket. I requested to eBay to remove this feedback because the damage was due to being damaged in transit. I thoroughly inspected the item including the pockets before I sent it out. Ebay denied my request because they said “the issue wasn’t described in the listing.” But the problem never existed at the time I got the pictures of the item. This damage is from the shipping! I do accept returns too and they never wanted to return it. Maybe they are fishing for a partial refund or something? I’m just so confused on what to do at this point. 😑
First, the good news. It's neutral, and it will have absolutely no negative impact on your account. So, don't give it more mental energy than it's worth. Second, I would reach out to eBay on Facebook if you haven't. Sending them a message is probably your best shot... but it's a long shot. You lose nothing by trying again. And if it's unsuccessful, block them and move on. You're too valuable to give them your peace of mind, too.
One of the best videos I've watched in a very long time! Thank you ❤
Thank you! I just got my first sale earlier this week with your tips and tricks.
YEAH! The first of many!
Great advice! I been working too hard!
This resonated on so many levels. Great advice and well received, thank you. Recently started selling at an antique mall with friend and although I’m not afraid of work… the items that sell are all small dollar items. For me, the amount of time to travel and set up to just make rent is not going to work. I need to get back on eBay and work smart. Thank you for the inspiration!
I know that the antique malls work for a lot of people. But, they didn't work for me. I gave it a good faith effort for about a year. I finished the year without making enough for a decent meal. lol
Hey Scot: Another great video...yes I agree with you, multiple items in one listing is the best way. I just looked at my average sales price for the month its just under $60, with active listings are sitting around 350, I only sale 1 or 2 things per day which is plenty for me. Like you I'm retired, my eBay business is more like a hobby than a job. I reinvest my profits into my business and make wise investments with the rest...easy peasy.
Our business models are very, very similar.
You are singing my song!! Thank you for the confirmation of what I imagine my business plan will be when I retire and do this reselling hustle “full time” 🎉🎉🎉
It's been an amazing fit for us.
Thanks fo heartfelt words, especially for us part time sellers!
The Japanese art of negotiation is that both parties must save face! Be fair with people and good Karma will pay you back! I'm sure one of the people you were fair with, then referred you on to a friend where you made more money. I don't source at all, but boxes of merchandise shows up here regularly from my dealer network. Dealers who buy large collections and see my niche and offer it to me first!
I've never heard about the Japanese Art of Negotiation...but I need to read up on it. It sounds like it's right up my alley.
Preach it! 👏 I’m a firm believer of giving yourself a tall ceiling of profit for an item. Especially if someone is starting out or just wants a small but mighty store.
100%! Having some wiggle room allows you so much flexibility when it comes time to make a sale.
Thank you! I'm 62 and was sick this week, unable to list, and very hard to ship. I have been worried about getting back at to "Work Harder", "List Faster" so that I can get caught back up. I will be taking your advice to heart because this really isn't the vision I had of reselling on eBay. Again, I appreciate your knowledge and willingness to share it!
I feel you. I had a doctor's visit recently and one of the questions was, "Are you healthy?" I was like, I'm 58. I haven't been healthy since the 90's.
This is great advice. For me, I’m very fussy about what I offer for sale and about how my listing looks, so it takes longer for me to get good listings done. But, it’s satisfying to get a sale and especially on a high priced item. I like your strategy.
So true!
I totally agree about buying the most profitable items you can and leaving the rest because your time is money. I have learned that lesson the hard way too! But for me, almost every interaction where I told a person that I was buying from that I am a reseller made the situation very uncomfortable, so I keep my mouth shut now. I source plenty, so I don’t worry about making connections. That’s just what works best for me, but I can see how your way works great for you. I enjoy your videos! Thanks!😊
I love this comment because you are 100% correct. You HAVE to do what works for you and that varies from one business to the next.
Thank you and greetings to Melanie from London.
I SO MUCH want to go thrifting in the UK. SOOOO much. It's on my bucket list.
This is just what I needed to hear. This past year I've been revamping my business and realize there are still some changes I need to make. Hearing the wisdom you shared helped to slow down that message of MORE, MORE, MORE that's been blaring at me when I listen to other resellers.
Thankfully my business is a side gig that I actually use more as a ministry than adding to our income. As I search for things to resell, I also look for items that will bless those in my community who may not be able to afford these things. I've also been blessed by others who know I resell. They give me boxes and bags of items they no longer want which is super easy for them. Then I take what I think will resell and pass along those items to others or donate elsewhere. It's a win-win!
Reselling has taught me so much about myself, and I love learning how to grow a successful business! Thanks for sharing what's been working for you guys! Blessings to you both!
I truly love everything you've had to say!
Great information as always. The way you handled bringing cash back to people is essentially the way I was raised. Not a 2nd thought for me. If people think that’s foolish that’s okay. Pay it forward. Do unto others. Whatever you believe it’s just doing you.
100%. I have been able to do that more times than I can count. And I have never regretted it.
@ never !
Thank you for the advice and the knowledge you have shared. I am just a part time reseller and I have started with lower cost items so that my investment wasn’t too much where I felt uncomfortable. I still was trying to get good $15 to $25 items. Now with a little cash I think I will try and start increasing my average sale price. Because you are right on, because when I have sold some of the items with higher prices and better profit it gets me excited! Thank you for all that you do to help us newbie’s improve our small business. Peace
If this channel proves helpful...then I consider that a win for me. It's truly what I want to hear. :-)
I appreciate your knowledge and that you’re sharing it!!!
I appreciate that!
@chachingking Thank you!!!
We can’t keep up with those who push to “hit it hard” every day! We did that in our 30’s, 40’s but now in our late 50’s we don’t want to hit it hard every day!! We want to love our lives and bless others as we work but be efficient and savvy!! Thank you for confirming what we don’t hear from others!!
Blessings to you and Melody!
Even if I could keep up with people crushing it...I don't want to. No desire.
Wise words.
So, Correct about quality items. I sell fishing baits. When I list a junk brand it sets for a while and when I list quality brands they go fast. Thanks for your info.
Keep up the great work.
Great video! I appreciate your thoughtfulness with your approach.
I'm still trying to sell items from my household and from a 98 year old friend that passed and we helped clean out her apartment. So on average I might be making 5.00 a sale. I probably get a sale a couple times a week if I'm lucky. I have over 140 items listed and try to list at least one to two times a week. Thankfully I don't have to rely on this for my income but I know at some point I will get better at this.
I have tried buying stuff I thought would sell from good will but I'm not happy with the time it takes to find and search out things that sell. I prefer it when people, friends and neighbors just give me stuff and I list it for whatever I can get for it. So far that works best for me.
That's actually a solid plan if it works for you. You can get a lot of no cost inventory that way.
"I can get dressed by myself." LOL. Great advise, as usual! Thank you! I'm very well versed in barware and other vintage glass, unfortunately my average is only $14 per sale. I do need to maximize and find better items! Thank you!
Oh wow...and I wouldn't have even thought about barware being a thing. But, now that I think about it, I bet it could be.
Wow that was truly amazing and inspiring! And smart!
thank you
You're so welcome!
Great advice as always! I have only been doing this for about 1 1/2 years and I have struggled with the want to make this a fulltime gig as quickly as possible versus just keeping it as extra income for our family. I think for now I finally settled on extra income but have been working to make it easier on myself by sourcing just like you talked about, either multiply quantity or higher profit. It has really been paying off for me here in the 4th quarter. The bonus has been that we are doing some remodeling to the exterior of our house and have been able to pay 100% cash for it. Thanks again Scot! -Crystal
Cash is KING! Sounds like you are making tremendous progress.
@@TheChaChingKing Yes it is, Mr. Ramsey would be proud 😉
Awesome guy
Yup. That's all.
This was one great video to watch and learn from. Thanks Scott for sharing this info with us. It helps all us new seller's get onto the right path of business building.
Thank you for this. :-)
Great video, love you sharing your wisdom on eBay topics. Must have been a great teacher. 👍👍
I LOVED being in the classroom. I really did. Had there not been such a disparity in pay, I would have loved to spend my whole career in the classroom. Having a family and being the primary bread-winner, it would have been a tough choice.
Thank You!
Amen!
work smarter, not harder!
Number 4 ❤ That is Lovely, Being Fair XO
Here's the funny thing about that Scot. You set out to do that, pick one item you can flip for a lot of money. And what ends up happening is that all of the sudden, there are all these lower value items that you had been struggling to find. It's like stumbling across an item in your inventory that you forgot you even had, and the next thing you know, it sells.
lol...you know this is so true.
I finally took the pludge, and started listing. I sold a vase. The total was 49.95. And i was a bit bummed when i only got 26.97. Im still listing. But i was kinda disheartened
Were you promoting it? How much did you charge for shipping? You should always make sure shipping is high enough that it covers some of your fees. And be glad you sold a vase, because there are thousands of vases listed that never sell.
@scottjohnson921 no it wasn't promoted. It was calculated shipping by ebay. You're right I did sell it, and it was a pretty cool rush. I'll keep doing eBay. I'm not gonna quit. Just kinda surprised me. Thanks Scot. You have inspired me so much, and I'm gonna keep trying.
@scottjohnson921 i guess I didn't realize how much eBay fees were. Shipping was 12.95. Priority, Buyer requested.
You'll get better at guestimating the actual profit with a few sales. It can really catch you off guard. I do much better now balancing average sale price against costs and fees.
@TheChaChingKing Thanks, Scot. I appreciate your help and advice.
Nice and share
Thank you so much!
Thank you for this great information. All your advice is so valuable for all sellers. Quick question for ya. I’m looking for a light box to take better photos of items. Any suggestions? Most of our items are small to medium sized. Any ideas would be very helpful. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and advice.
I was in the middle of responding to this question, got a notice on another page...and LOST THIS! LOL It took me almost an hour to get back here. We use (and like) the PULUZ one. I got it on Amazon and it's been great. It's about 16X16X16. I like the all in one for a light box. I'll put my affilite link here, but you wouldn't have to use it. You could search it just as easily. Keep in mind, if you use my affiliate link and buy it, I might earn a commission. :-) (Required disclosure) rivr.link/CCK-WsPgaV
Hello, id like to say that I've been watching your videos over the last week as I had the idea to try selling again, and your videos have been excellent help to answer things I had trouble with before. I have one big question though, and this may be in a video I haven't seen. What do you do when you go on vacation? Obviously you aren't able to ship items when you are away, so do you just ship everything that sells when you are gone when you get home? Or do you put like a pause or something on your account? Curious as I try to get a 7 day vacation once or twice a year, and not sure how that would correlate with selling if I have items that are long term sales rather than short term
It's actually SUPER easy. You just put your store on time away. Go to your Seller Hub. Find the section for SELLING TOOLS. Then, scroll down until you see the TIME AWAY. Open that up and check it out. I usually leave the option for people to purchase things while we are gone. Then, if something sells, I send them a note reminding them when I'll ship and give them the option of cancelling if they choose. They rarely do. I think it works great.
This was a great video for me since I'm already over 65 and I'm setting up to sell on eBay. It came a little late though.... I have a shed full of $20.00 items that I bought for a couple of $$$ each. 😬🤣 (I do have half a shed full of high $$$ items to offset this though)😏
Well, I have had a shed full of $20 items, too. lol I speak from experience.
I am a $9.95 seller. I don't offer free shipping although I do allow my eBay discount for buyer. When items are that low, it's best to only let them sit 3 months. Then I take them to the flea market for $5 lol.
If that works, then that's awesome. The flea market for me would be great, it's just SOOO far from my house.
I find that if price point is 35$ or less, buyers seem more inclined to give low offers or pass up my items due to my competition. With a higher PP, offers make less of a dent in my earnings.
Totally agree
((helpful not opportunist)) ... Really a lesson how to be seller+++... Thanks for the advice.
Thank you so much!
Hello there, thanks for the valuable content. My question is a bit unrelated to this video topic but is it okay that eBay asks for our SS# as a new seller even if we only sold 1 item at less than $10.00? Is this standard for them to automatically require this in order to get paid first before even reaching close to $600? Just wanted to be sure it's safe to provide so early on, it seems like it contradicts their own terms. Thanks!!
It is completely normal. EBay is required to keep track of sales by each individual for the IRS. Once you hit $600 for the year, they have to report it. So, it's required to provide it if you're going to sell.
@TheChaChingKing Thanks got it !!
Thanks again, Scott as always you never disappoint damn buddy $70 ASP you truly are the king 🤴
That number goes up and down. :-) I just need to make sure I show everyone when it's at it's highest. :-) All joking aside, it's taken some time, study and good-fortune to get it to where it is right now.
@ u r
A beast. 💪😠
I see a link to everything but your eBay store am I missing it or is it not there, all I can find is a bunch of merch with your name on it help me here
My main store is Oldschoolwear
I don't really sell anything on the merch store. I keep that account because it doesn't have a store subscription. It helps with some of the videos as a comparison to an account with one.
I took a year off from listing. I was so burned out.
I understand.
I’m kinda new to reselling on eBay- what kind of items bring a bigger profit?
That is the wrong question. If someone could answer that, everyone would just go buy only those items. You need to watch a hundred videos on reselling to get an idea of what sells, and you need to go out and buy things and list them and get experience. The item that gets the biggest profit is something you get for free...if you can sell that item.
It totally depends on what category you sell in. You need to become an expert in the category you choose. No one can answer that question for you
The answers you've already had are correct. It's really hard for anyone to tell you what to pick up. For one, what's selling today may not be selling at all tomorrow. I will say this. The items that do the best for me are things that everyone remembers and loves...but no one saved. For example, everyone saved the newspapers from the moon landing. They have no value. But, they have fond memories of their grandpa's favorite farm overalls, but no one saved them. They were used up and discarded when they couldn't be repaired anyone. So, truly vintage farm clothes are really high right now. Most old newspapers aren't worth anything. Low supply...high demand. Find those items and you'll make more per item.
Get off that Hamster wheel !!!
Get off the wheel on your own...or get thrown off....LOL
hello. Can you make a video on how to upload pics from your pc onto Ebay?? I'm trying to sell on ebay but when I upload a pic it wont allow it. it says my pic is too small and the pixels need to bee 500.... I dont know what that means or how to fix it. Can you direct me? Thank you
If you're taking pictures with your phone, make sure you're using a higher resolution. It just sounds like eBay is rejecting them because they are too low of resolution.
@@TheChaChingKing Ok, i will. Never thought about that!... Thank you.😀
Don't use your PC to load photos. Set up your listing on the PC except for the photos, and then save it as a draft. Later, after you have several drafts saved, take out your phone, and open the eBay app. Find the drafts, open up the first one, and then take photos directly to your listing that you have saved. When the photos are taken, you then hit the publish button and your listing is completed. I find that is the fastest way to do it.
That would be an epic video!
@@scottjohnson921 YES!!.. Thank you, scottjohnson921!!.. That is a BIG help.. 😃
And spending too much for too little value
I appreciate what you’re trying to tell people - and I agree completely - but sharing your ASP without sharing your Average Buy Price (or whatever you want to call it) is really not very helpful, and in fact may simply discourage people. Please, give the full picture to the viewer. Thanks.
Our goal has always been to keep our buy costs exceptionally low. One of the things I said in this video was to be willing to pay up for better items initially. Then focus on becoming an expert in a category to bring your buy costs back down. I didn't put a number on it because it will vary so much from seller to seller, but I did address it in the video. I feel like I'm giving the full picture as best as I can.
My ebay business died in April 2023 and has not recovered
They messed up the algorithm. I notice I get zero views now unless I promote very high. Even then sales are slow.
@la6136 i have 90% promoted and still zero...I have sold on ebay for 10 years.. crazy
I wonder what happened? What do you sell? I didn't have a sharp decline then. The only sharp decline I had was when I started RUclips. It pulled me away from eBay a lot and that made a difference. But once I found a balance I haven't had any sharp drop offs.
