Way to "take one for the team" Scot! I learn so much from your videos-I am currently promoting at 5% on most items. I may back down to 3% (where I was) and watch-I have searched my listings and promoting definitely gets them closer to the top of the search-obviously depends how many of that item are for sale. Thank you!
As someone who was early to eBay, joined in 1998, I have seen the total evolution of the platform and would never pay them to promote my item. They are getting paid enough as it is, this is like paying extra to skip the lines at a theme park, just foolish. I would rather they only charge me 5% fees and bury my listing behind all others.
Good job with the experiment. The one time I can say I was rooting against you making a sale because I knew that eBay was going to hit you with 100% on the PL plus the final value fees on everything plus the shipping. It is crazy to me how eBay can allow a seller to use this high of a rate without a disclaimer, however it just shouldn't be an option because sadly some won't realize this will be the result. I am happy to see you had some success with your others sales afterward. Overall, a costly but very interesting experiment. Thanks for doing it!
I truly appreciate you being OK with me going ahead with this. I had already filmed the first part and started the promotion before I was smart enough to look and see if it had already been done. 😆
I've been really curious on promoting! Found that you can set your own promotions at 2-3% which I did not know. But, never 100% for sure now!:))) Thank you as always!
Probably the first time ever that a seller said 'Thank goodness only one sold.' 😄 Very interesting experiment! I was going to say that I believe this is what Dave Ramsey refers to as a 'stupid tax'..... but I won't.
Hello Scot! Great video. Now we know. You took one for the team!!😄 We’ll blame the excitement of finally selling the coat ( or maybe the shock of what it cost you) on shipping it in the wrong box!! Hope you & Mel have a very happy Thanksgiving!!
Greetings from the DFW area and many thanks for conducting the experiment and sharing the insightful results - I was suspecting that it would result in a negative due to the normal fees and such. The other activity was also interesting to hear. Appreciate the knowledge you share with us. No roast on the box - I've had my share of things like this over time - happens to all of us.
I didn’t realize that the percentage was of the amount it sold for. I only promoted a few items but at the suggested 10 to 12%. I didn’t really see a big change so I haven’t tried again. But I have adjusted prices or shipping and that has helped. Thanks for sharing your experience with us. Happy Selling! Peace
The biggest thing I learned is that you can sort the start date!!! I’ve worked off my phone for almost two years and finally got a laptop. I’m learning so much about all the things I can do with eBay now that I have a laptop. Thanks! 🙏 tell Melody hello 💕💕
@ that’s exactly what I’m finding out! I bought the laptop so I had a way to run sales. I’m a very slow ebay seller and worked with the bare minimums until the time came where I would buy supplies when deemed cost effective and needed. I save SO MUCH time now having a label maker!!! 😅
I heard another RUclipsrs talk about 100% and thought to myself. Actually it would cost you more than the hundred percent. Now I know I was right after your experiment. Cheers Graham.
I have been purchasing LPs on eBay for 14 years with almost totally positive results. Got an offer I couldn't refuse to sell something, and it went well (vintage audio product). I don't completely understand what you did so I need to watch again. I never expect to become a big-time seller, but my experience was positive. I think that is largely due to the fact that I had a really nice buyer and did not overcharge too much on shipping (I used a flat rate based on what prior sellers had used for that particular item) and disclosed the item honestly.
Basically, you can pay eBay a little extra to push your listing up in rank...so more people see it. The higher percentage you promote at, the more eyes your item gets in front of. I promoted these at 100%. Lol...so eBay gets all of the sale money plus the fees and shipping.
Hey Scot: The most important part was the customer was happy. I promote all my listing at 2% I sell 1 or 2 promoted listing every day at 2% not a bad deal...$2 off of $100. I did learn something from your video...never promote at 100% LOL.
@@defender714 That's a great question. I don't think anyone can give you a solid answer because there are too many variables. If someone only sells high-volume mall brands, they will have a different opinion than someone who only sells rare items. I can give you the math for 100%...it isn't worth it. I've been doing 2%. I'm not convinced it's worth it, either. I know this won't come across as the most self-assured "RUclipsr" answer, but, I have no idea what's best..not even for me. I've been playing with my own percentages just to see what works for me. I can't tell anyone else with any conviction what they should do, because I'm not sure myself.
Love the experiment! Did you check to see if your item was listed on the top after you did 100% promotion? Did the item fall off top spot after you removed the promotion? I wonder if it still stayed high up after you ended the promotion and that’s why you were still able to sell it? I’m glad you are able to recuperate some loss after eBay mercilessly took all the profits then some. I really think eBay should have a set fee for items under $20.
Possibly take refreshed photos of item s that have Stale or No bites. Use new descriptions. New backgrounds. Sometimes it take a bit of effort on the seller’s part to fluff up their inventory to make things more appealing to the audience. Kinda like a lady excising herself to “go use the ladies” room to powder her nose!” Always include the shipping as the responsibility of the buyer. You learned a great lesson. The best lesson are 1) the most painful or 2) the ones that cost you money. Good luck fluffing or powdering your nose😀😎
I agree, all of the things you've mentioned are more effective than promoting listings, IMO. I ran the experiment out of curiosity as much as anything.
That was a great experiment! Don’t think I’m going to promote listings yet, and if I do it will be 10% max. I’m still hoping to get buyers to take a chance on this new seller. Thanks for all you do! ❤
You've got this! Promoting listings is one of the least impactful ways to get buyers, IMO. Having a great item with a proper title and pictures will always perform well.
I was aware that 2% promotion was the low option, but I had assumed there was an upper limit because when I do bulk edit of the promoted rate, I see 25% is the sort of greyed-in suggested number - I don't know why I had perceived that as a cap of some sort. Of course, I always adjust that downward...what kind of madman would go over 25%?!? Oh...uhm...🤣😂🤣 Thanks for doing the experiment and the video. It's always a great day when I learn something new!
@@BlueFeatherEphemera I typically use 2% if I promote an item. But, more and more, I haven't been doing it at all. I'm not sure I see a difference. I'd like to tell you with confidence what the answer is, but I can't...not even for myself.
you know, i'm wondering if when you added promotion to those items, if it treated them somewhat as a 'new listing' so they were just moved up a bit on the results pages. pretty interesting stuff! i have a question - these items that had been listed for this long, had you ever ended and relisted them to try and move them?
@@TheChaChingKing I sell mainly on Etsy, but I have found that if I delist an item that's been there a long time, then relist it, it gets bumped back up into the search algorithm.
I personally think promotions are not incredibly effective. You're better off to change your price. Having a good item with a good price is much more important than having it promoted.
This was a great educational experiment (for us, not so sure about for you!). But even though I would never promote my listings at more than the bare minimum, I did learn something pretty important. I used to think that promoting an item at 10% was the same as lowering the selling price by 10%, BUT THIS IS NOT TRUE! Because with the promoted listing eBay ALSO takes the final value fee off the entire selling price in addition to the promotion fee. Thanks for sharing and teaching.
That's a crazy experiment! Promoted does help, but eBay suggested rate would not suggest that to anyone. I promote about 90% of my items a flat 4%. I can do that because I get items much cheaper than most. I would not suggest to anyone to promote your items unless you try a couple items first. Also, all because you promote an item, does not always sell with the promotion. Thanks for sharing Scot
You basically updated 3 year old stale listings. If you have any other listings that old you should end and relist them using sell similar. Or at minimum, refresh the listings by editing them in some way, even if it's just raising or lowering the price by a penny. Ideally you never want to let listings get that old, unless it's a multi quantity listing that sells items consistently.
The mop pads I listed have been there 7 years now. We've sold thousands of them. Never an exciting sale when it goes off, but the net return is incredible. I love multi-quantity listings
Scott i personally think listing as someone who search for it. Put in the significance of the item but use all 80 characters focus on those first 5 words though. If you where on Google how would you search?... Ebay people search the same way. 40s swing jacket or 1940s style coat. Real ponder that title. Promotion I'm still having concerns with them being able to gain profits on taxes and shipping legally. By federal law both of those are illegal to gain profit because it's to go to the government. World famous people are sued for doing that. How does Ebay get away with it. So nope I'm not promoting nothing. You care so much for us that it costed you money to prove it. You the best ChachingKing!❤
Hahaha! Fun experiment, Scot. At first I thought you were gonna tell us that you lost your a$$ on this one. 😂 Btw today I taught my first Memoirs workshop since before covid. Only 4 people showed up, but we had a great time. And since then, I've been contacted by 5 other people, asking me to please offer the workshop again in the Spring... because today was the opening day of deer season. 🤣
I am curious to know if you or anyone else have had items just disappear from your listings I have had several items that I posted for sale in the past 6 months that never sold but no longer exist on my eBay store. Did I do something wrong?
You didn't do anything wrong. I found one today. I was going through a storage tub and saw something I was surprised hadn't sold. It's been "listed" for a LONG time. But...nope. No listing anywhere. Just gone. I think when they items renew each month that sometimes they can get lost in the transition.
I think it would depend on the overall cost, category, and seller level. Probably too many variables to have one set number. And, selfishly, I'm not going to keep testing it to find out. Lol
Thank u for your experiment. I promote all my listing (I am very new to this) at suggested rates. I feel it helps bur never quit sure because I promote everything. This info is very very useful. Thank you. P.S. youre far from an idiot. I am a very experienced food server and still make common errors now and again. Thats life.
I started at 2% and if that doesn’t work gradually go up if it’s a good it doesn’t need promoting that’s where a lot of people make mistake I found I was just giving money away promoting at their recommended rating. Those fees are insane.
:-) Agreed. I don't take the self-deprecating humor too seriously. That said, I also wouldn't want to try and push out the message that I think I'm infallible. I know better. And when I forget...life reminds me. LOL
So basically just the action or activity you did on those items brought it higher in search, so instead of promoting I wonder if you just edit price or title or end sell similar that item it will do the same thing
You can cancel without any fees if it hasn't sold. But it can sell after you end the promotion and still incur the charge of the person originally saw it on the promoted listing. I think that condition lasts for 30 days.
CC King...did you see more views when you increased the promoted rate? I know you stated that you do 2% currently but was there a difference? I just don't like promoting when I do see proof from Ebay saying we did this and that. So I am curious if you saw an increase in watchers. Maybe next video you can do is the same items at promoted rate 10% /2% and none to see if there was an impact on it. Thanks for the great videos that you make.
Honestly, I was so sure it wouldn't make any difference that I didn't track the views at all. I think promoting listings is the least effective thing you can do to make more sales. I get far more benefit from having good items with good pictures and great titles.
@@TheChaChingKing I was curious if you saw more clicks on your items since you increased the promoted rate. Do you think 2% is worth it? Why do you do it? Too many items listed already for the one you are going to list? Thanks for the reply.
Scot you’re always coming up with the weirdest experiences 😆. Are you ending and selling similar your listings? I’d highly suggest it for moving older inventory if you aren’t.
I tried that a few years back with no luck at all. I did 20 of my oldest items several months in a row. But I may try it again to see if things are different today.
@ I end/sell similar 30 items a day so that everything gets refreshed within the quarter. Another way to go about bumping your items up to be seen is to alternate increasing/decreasing prices by 1% daily. I’d be super curious to see you try the end/sell similar experiment though! Maybe try it daily for a month?
At 100%, it's like double-dipping on Ebay! Great experiment. Maybe the other two sales were done afterwards because the buyers just put them in their cart and then went back to purchase it after you took it off Ebay promotions. Are you able to track if there were more 'eyes' on those products when you had them on promotion?
You ended the experiment too early!!! That was a good experiment. I would have ended it also but, maybe lower everything to 50% for the remainder of the experiment. I personally list everything at 2% and let it ride for my store. I should experiment like you.
Hey Scott how are you my brother. Say hi to Melody for me Your timing is impeccable. I was just talking to my eBay friend in Arizona about promoted listings quick question for you if a person promotes at 2% do they have the same amount of eyeballs on their items as a person that would promote 10% or 15%, let me know n as always thanks again my friend
@ I agree, brother I think I’m just gonna keep on doing what I’ve been doing and not promote. I’m just a newbie still trying to get thru my closets and items. I have around the house here lol but thanks for the confirmation. You’re the best.
From what I understand (take that for what it's worth) is that if the buyer originated a cancellation or a return, the standard promotion fees WOULD be returned. I would never just refund them to save the money because I took on this experiment having a pretty good idea how it would turn out.
I never really paid attention to the final value fees and promoted listing fees until I sat down and put it down on an excel sheet. I don’t think that in the future I will promote higher than 2%. Most of my items had a final value fee of over 3.50 and with the extra fee for promoted listings my cut was just too small. As soon as I took them all off promoted listings my sales dropped considerably. I am already paying a store fee per month so you really don’t get too much extra exposure for doing that. Pretty disappointing for sure.
A one more thing years past, when I shipped it in the wrong box with the wrong label nothing much was said, but here recently they’ve haven’t been tolerating that at the postal office
The thing is, I've made that exact same mistake once before. I know better. I do like it that I get charged for it instead of it being returned or something.
Old listings can be problematic when we increase the Promoted percentage, or drastically lower the price. I haven't tried increasing the Promoted percentage, but I have drastically reduced some prices. Great, the item sold, but some ended as a loss. Even before figuring in the cost of the item. I would be better off, just trashing some of them, and move on.
Silk purse out of a sow’s ear.. lipstick on s pig?? The sacrificial lamb? I concur w/ Scot, that IS a gorgeous vintage swing coat! But ultimately, it had to be sacrificed, if only because it was legitimately included in his ten oldest items. Maybe the new owner will be loyal enough to purchase more from them but don’t count on it. All old/ stale (probably dead to the eBay algo) listings can benefit from what we refer to in our business as rehab when we end & sell sim. New pic(s), improved title (keywords, structure/ order), measurements (we used to type them out but graduated to a graphic in the photo album, price reduction, shipping adjustment, etc.. Another analogy I refer to is doing the “old song-and-dance routine” or the “dog-and-pony circus show” on the rehabbed listing. It works a lot of the time. Will I EVER pick up that item/ brand again? Probably licking my wounds & learned my lesson!! Now.. discussing my philosophy on eBay promoted listings is a whole ‘nother subject and I’ve already gotten far too long-winded with this clock-winder!!
He should be able to. Any promotion, whether a promotio al fee, free item, etc, can be written off of taxes under advertising costs. The loss on shipping that happened would be put in with the original shipping costs if it was done with free shipping. With customer paid shipping, the shipping loss could be put in as a shipping loss. I hope this helps.
@@leebrown9658 That's what I thought, but I am not an accountant. I would think that he could either use the write off under his ebay business, or his RUclips business if he has that as a separate business entity since it was an experiment used for content creation here.
The ending date is when they will charge you again for having the item listed. It's not that they delist and relist. Many people do their delist/relist just before the end date. If you pass the end date, you pay a fee for the item. Then if you relist, you pay again for the same item. Whereas if you relist just before the end date, you only pay once for that item for that upcoming month.
hi im trying to make a little money with just whats in my house and garage, it seems im just giving my things away after buying my label from ebay. also should i say yes to offers? most of my items are up for 10 dollars and they still want to offer a lower price also it always say buyer wants to use this shipping, do i have to?
I wouldn't do offers of items are $10 and under. For the most part, I don't list items in that price range because there's just no room to make any profit. Items in that price range I usually sell locally.
Your post office is literally on strike? Whoa! I wouldn't end the listings or take them down. Set your store handling time for 10 days or something. Then send the buyer a note and let them know what's going on.
@@TheChaChingKing maybe this would make a good quick video subject. Tons of Canadian sellers in the same boat. It might be a long strike and they’ve already said when it ends mail will be extra slow for months. And of course the couriers have instituted “surge pricing” which should be illegal. I’m slowly moving my listings to Kijiji and FB marketplace 😕
I can't find the promoted listing option on mine. Mine only shows "Listing Upgrades" and "Volume Pricing"... I've been a seller since the beginning of June, sold over 60 items with 100% positive feedback and over 3k in sales... You would think I qualify. Am I missing something??? Do I have to opt in to something or will it be like the eBay International Shipping Program and just opt me in to the privilege to have promoted listings? If so any idea of what I need to meet to qualify? Thanks, as always you videos are awesome!!
Thanks so much! No, as far as I know, you should have the ability to promote your items from the very beginning. Usually, you do each individual item when you are listing them. Do you see the option to promote your items when you are listing them?
I understand why you pulled the plug. It is too bad that you were getting clobbered so badly. It would have been interesting to know what would have happened with the other 9 items fully promoted for say, a month. Would they have all sold?
Well oops I am watching while listing and promoting lol. And now back to the video. Bahahaha 100% you are funny. As Fred Sandford would say…you big dummy. Joke. I so appreciate you taking this huge risk to help us learn from it. I know that a few weeks ago I was just not selling anything nothing was moving so I went in and listed. Everything did sell similar and promoted everything at about 4 to 5% and the next day I was making sales and have been ever since.
Sometimes if you do the math, raising the promotion costs less than what you were going to discount the item for to get it to sell. And they might buy it unpromoted anyhoo.
I'm confused. Do I need a store to promote in the way you did? (Well, not at 100%, lol) My screen doesn't look like your screen at 2:38. Instead, I get a pop up window asking "General Campaign Strategy" or "Priority Campaign Strategy." Huh, I don't even know what those big words mean. I want to do what you did (but not at 100%, lol). What am I doing wrong?
It's hard for me to know without seeing your screen. But, you would want to use GENERAL Campaign Strategy, I believe. I think the Priority is the one I'm used to calling Advanced...where you pay per click. That was a big fail for me. But without seeing your screen, I'm guessing.
@@TheChaChingKing Tku, Yes, "General" got me to where I could do as you did even tho the page looked different than yours. Weird it was 3? or 4? more steps. I set it to a sweet 2%, foregoing any suggested 100%? or 110%? or 150%? 🤑 I might up it later. This item is kinda unheard of, so unless someone is specific in their search, it can just fly by. Its been stagnant, so this promotion might push it forward. Thx for your fast reply!!

I wonder if you double the price and then do a 50% promotion on it and then in a week.. drop the price back down and take off the promotion.. if that would help it sell.
I was expecting that. I don't think they will now. But if they do, I'll come back and let everyone know. I'll pin that comment at the top if it were to happen.
@TheChaChingKing Thank you for the experiment. Never do that again, Sir. Just delist, update, and sell similar. That coat was awesome. We appreciate you & the beautiful Ms. Cha-ching Queen.
I can try to help. But, private questions are a bit limited. I'm still trying to answer every question I get on RUclips. But, it's a couple of hours every day already. So, if it's something I can answer in a timely manner, I'll try. If it's concerning what name you sell under on eBay, I honestly don't think it matters unless you have already built a name with a following. If you aren't selling branded items, I'm truly convinced it won't make much difference....if any.
@ Thank you for your time. I greatly appreciate it . I watched your videos in January last year and they really helped. I really just wanted to keep my business separate from my personal page. I also lost 650 friends by putting my FB on a break when starting Marketplace. So I’d be building up followers. I have to make this my living at 64… long story! Thank you again. Very inspiring and the most helpful of all the videos I watch!
Imagine if a person first clicked on your 100% promoted item, then went on to buy other non promoted items in your store but because they clicked on the promoted first the others get charged 100% also. They could of emptied your store and you would of owed tens of thousands of dollars, dangerous games
Did you end those listings or just end the promotion? As per ebay - For listings promoted using a general strategy, if a buyer clicks on a general ad and then purchases any of your general strategy items within 30 days, it will be considered a promoted sale and an ad fee will be charged.
Exactly! That's why this was so strange. I didn't end the listings and put them back up. All I did was take the promotion off. That means that these items had NEW eyes on them after I took the promotion off. It really did surprise me.
@@TheChaChingKingMaybe the listing hangs in even after you take the promotional % off for a certain amount of time that the system takes to take it off the list. Maybe?
Unfortunately, you really never make up a loss like that except writing it off on your taxes. Even if you raise the price of other items and they sell, it could mean that those items were underpriced.
It was probably really close overall. Really fascinating experiment for me. I didn't think anything would sell. I certainly didn't expect anything to sell off promotion.
It seems Ebay has great control over how an item gets exposed to a potential audience. The experiment suggests that Ebay has the ability to control the exposure of an item at will. It seems that they are not using that ability to its full potential. Are they suppressing exposure? Why would they not be willing to do their best to get your product exposed. Wouldn't it benefit them also? Or...am I not understanding something?
I think you are seeing it pretty clear, with one exception. It isn't my item or nothing. They are still putting items in front of buyers constantly. So, their control just helps dictate WHICH items the potential buyers see. If I have the only one of something, there would be no need to promote. If people are looking for that rare gem, eBay will put it in front of them. If I'm selling a run of the mill pair of modern Levi's in a common size, there are 10,000 different choices to show potential buyers. In that scenario, it benefits eBay to put the one in front of the buyer that nets them the most profit. Hence, the promotion fees.
I have a question. If you do Priority Promotion for a few weeks without results and decide to turn it off, do you still pay the promotion fee when it finally sells?
Ahhh, interesting! Since ebay takes roughly 13% in fees, I promote everything dynamic with a 7% cap (most will promote at 7%). So, I can just figure 20% is going to ebay when I price. 👍🏼
That 20% is about the same as Poshmark. I know a lot of people hate the fees. But, I think they are reasonable for the access eBay give me to such a large pool of potential buyers.
I ended up selling 3, which seems high, considering how long all of them had been sitting. Two of them selling without incurring the promotion fee seems crazy. Totally not worth it financially, but it's genuinely interesting to me.
All of the platforms want you to promote so they make more money off your items. The higher you promote, the higher the visibility. They dont care if you make money or not because it allows them to make money.
I think while under the promotion, the items you had there got more views than normal. When you set them back, the number of views kept it in the rotation even without the promotion's help.
Question - when you promote 100% are you saying that you are paying 100% of your listing price? For example, if you list it at $10 and promote at 100% = $10? However, 1 sale out of 10 is only 10% sell through. I'm going to try it, but at 15%
Yes, 100% of the sale price went to eBay... plus the regular fees. I'd never, ever recommend it. 😆 Keep in mind that I ended up selling 3 items out of 10 that had all been listed for over 3 years. If never do it again, but it was still intriguing.
That promoting at 100% is even an option is a complete joke. Shame on ebay.
Was my first thought! Seriously. And even if thy do you should get like a special email confirming such craziness for anything over what? 10%?
It makes me wonder how many times someone meant to enter 10% and accidentally clicked an extra zero.

John 3:16-21
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

There should be something in place that if it's 100% promoted the the other fees are voided.
Way to "take one for the team" Scot! I learn so much from your videos-I am currently promoting at 5% on most items. I may back down to 3% (where I was) and watch-I have searched my listings and promoting definitely gets them closer to the top of the search-obviously depends how many of that item are for sale. Thank you!
100% definitely got them to the top of the search. LOL
100% is a hard NO. 😆
We can't roast you. You took one for the team to have a teachable moment. Thank you again for a very informative video! -Crystal
I appreciate that
So I wonder if you pick a loss leader in the shop and promote it super high and see if the rest of the shop gets a boost.
It makes me wonder if that's what some of the companies on eBay are doing. There are some items they can't possibly be making any money on.
As a shopper, I do look to see what else a buyer has in their shop, so it probably does give sellers a boost.
Probably the first time ever that a seller said 'Thank goodness only one sold.' 😄 Very interesting experiment! I was going to say that I believe this is what Dave Ramsey refers to as a 'stupid tax'..... but I won't.
I paid the tax so that you don't have to. LOL 😆
@@TheChaChingKing 👍👍👍👍👍
Well, that was definitely educational, thank you for conducting the experiment
I love this experiment! You’re so creative & curious & smart! Thanks for sharing this with us.
Thank you, Jessy!
Great experiment. Other resellers will learn from this. Thanks ❤.
I know that I learned a lot
Hello Scot! Great video. Now we know. You took one for the team!!😄 We’ll blame the excitement of finally selling the coat ( or maybe the shock of what it cost you) on shipping it in the wrong box!! Hope you & Mel have a very happy Thanksgiving!!
I hope that you and yours have an amazing Thanksgiving as well.
The negative didn't surprise me either. The sales after the fact did. Interesting for me, regardless. Thanks for the comment!
Peace
I truly appreciate you watching
The biggest thing I learned is that you can sort the start date!!! I’ve worked off my phone for almost two years and finally got a laptop. I’m learning so much about all the things I can do with eBay now that I have a laptop. Thanks! 🙏 tell Melody hello 💕💕
Melody said to say HI back. :-) There are SO many things you can do on a computer that you can't do on your phone.
I felt very confident it would come out like this too. I didn't expect the sales AFTER the promotion, though. Fascinating stuff.
@@TheChaChingKing thank you.
Hey Scot: The most important part was the customer was happy. I promote all my listing at 2% I sell 1 or 2 promoted listing every day at 2% not a bad deal...$2 off of $100. I did learn something from your video...never promote at 100% LOL.
Never promote at 100%
That should be my next tshirt
Well then whats the best %. Wheres the math.
@@defender714 Sounded like 2% is working for OP. Start there and adjust as you go? 🤔
May I ask - how big is your closet, and what are your average # sales per day?
I really didn't even look at them until it was over. I probably should have. But, honestly, I didn't expect them to do anything at all.
I hate losing money on a sale but good to know promo listing works. I guess it could drive buyers to your store
Lol...it actually did bring in buyers. Despite the loss, I learned a lot about it through the process.
Interesting experiment. Learned a lot and thank you for sharing this with us….😊
Possibly take refreshed photos of item s that have Stale or No bites.
Oh...uhm...🤣😂🤣
Thanks for doing the experiment and the video. It's always a great day when I learn something new!
Other than pure curiosity, anything over 25% seems insane to me. I'm not sure what it says about me. LOL
@TheChaChingKing I use either 2%, 5%, or 9% based on a bunch of factors. Sometimes, I feel like I'm trying to overthink it.
@@BlueFeatherEphemera I typically use 2% if I promote an item. But, more and more, I haven't been doing it at all. I'm not sure I see a difference. I'd like to tell you with confidence what the answer is, but I can't...not even for myself.
you know, i'm wondering if when you added promotion to those items, if it treated them somewhat as a 'new listing' so they were just moved up a bit on the results pages. pretty interesting stuff! i have a question - these items that had been listed for this long, had you ever ended and relisted them to try and move them?
and this is in reference to the items that sold *after* the experiment. i wasn't super clear on that lol
It must have done something similar to what you're thinking. I may try some other old items and end and relist them...without doing anything else.
@@TheChaChingKing I sell mainly on Etsy, but I have found that if I delist an item that's been there a long time, then relist it, it gets bumped back up into the search algorithm.
So is it better to raise your promoted listing amount or lower your price on an item?
I personally think promotions are not incredibly effective. You're better off to change your price. Having a good item with a good price is much more important than having it promoted.
What if they had returned the item? would you get the ad fee back from ebay?
I think so. As long as it was initiated by the buyer.
ever thought about end and sell similar on those 4 year old listings?
A few years ago, I tried that once a month...20 items at a time. It had zero benefit. But I may try it again just to see if there's any impact.
@ new items get a bump. Always have
This was a great educational experiment (for us, not so sure about for you!).
It really was a great learning experience for me.
I wonder how donating an item works. Thanks for sharing the experience!
Well, that was interesting. I was promoting items but have stopped mostly. When I do, I use 5% or less. Thanks Scot !
Try 100%. Do it. 😆
I won't be doing 100% again. Lol
@TheChaChingKing I guess it would be a quick way to offload inventory. 😆 🤣 😂
I can’t find my old (I’ve only been with EBay for 1 yr so not that old- but don’t know where to look???) HELP!
You are 100% correct. A listing with a great title, pictures, and item will sell without being promoted at a high level
Thank you both for sharing you have a blessed day in the name of Jesus Christ.
Such a great experiment. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you
eBay tells you to buy shipping labels for discounted shipping rates. what's the savings if u must purchase the label?
Because you're getting the commercial rate, which is much cheaper than buying a label at the post office.
I know you have a life too, but we need to see more of you on here, buddy. Seems like you have a lot of fans. 🤩👍
Is this a repeat msg?
He’s answered in one of the last comments Lotta work ☺️
It may take a little time for it to build up to the size of audience you want. But I can totally see it happening.
So I wonder, what would be the max promotion rate to sell but Not lose money? Like donating, but via Ebay.
Thats life.
At least the item is out of your inventory and in the hands of someone who really wants it.
100%
I started at 2% and if that doesn’t work gradually go up if it’s a good it doesn’t need promoting that’s where a lot of people make mistake I found I was just giving money away promoting at their recommended rating. Those fees are insane.
It was definitely interesting to see it... but not so interesting that I'd ever do it again. Lol
Every time i increase my promoted percentage ebays suggested rate goes up a point higher than i promoted.
Not an idiot, when you learn something.
I wonder, too. Because I didn't end them or anything. The only thing I fiddled with was the promotion percentage.
Great experiment did see John doing this. Can you imagine if you sold all 10 haha
😆 Do not speak that into existence!
is the item listed with the promotion til it sells or can you cancel it without any fees?
As far as my understanding, the fees are only charged if the item sells, and you can change/cancel the promotional listing.
@@leebrown9658 Thank you. Haven't been brave enough to promote anything to this point. It may take me awhile before I do.
Holy crap😮 how could they encourage that?! Thanks for the lesson. 😊 what a bummer.
I thought that the promoted listing was proxy? Like just put you at the top of promos. If you put in a 100% why did it use 100%??
No, it's a literal percentage you're giving eBay for boosting your item in search results.
Thanks for doing this, very interesting.
I really found it interesting, too.
An excellent experiment!
If a buyer saw the item through a promoted listing, it will still sell under the promotion even if I ended the promotion. I think it lasts 30 days.
@@TheChaChingKing Oh, wow!!!
You ended the experiment too early!!! That was a good experiment. I would have ended it also but, maybe lower everything to 50% for the remainder of the experiment. I personally list everything at 2% and let it ride for my store. I should experiment like you.
Lol...yeah...I had to call it quits. 😀
10-15% would put you in front of more eyes. BUT, I'm still convinced that that's not necessary unless you have an item in a really saturated field.
@ I agree, brother I think I’m just gonna keep on doing what I’ve been doing and not promote. I’m just a newbie still trying to get thru my closets and items. I have around the house here lol but thanks for the confirmation. You’re the best.
Cool! Love this. Love John too.
I don't know him really well, but I have talked to him a few times. He's always been super cool towards me.
Great content!!! Subbed!!!!
Awesome, thank you!
So what if buyer wanted to return the item within the 30 days? EBay isn’t going to return the 100% they took from you? Or are they?
I completely understand. I'm not convinced promoting is worth it either.
Oh, I completely agree. It was interesting to see the effect. But it's not something I would do again.
Did you just take off promoted listings or did you sell similar?
Great question. I just took off the promoted listing. I didn't end and sell similar or anything like that.
LOL...I read every word. And, I agree with everything you said.
I love this comment!!!!
Too small of a store to give EBay everything . But I like these type of videos .
I'm too small to do this again, too. 😆
lol Scot 😂 Thanks for taking one for research!
My experiment makes me resemble your RUclips name
Great Video!
Awesome video...😂 Thanks,it was fun to watch.
Are you able to use your experiment and loss as a business expense/write-off?
He should be able to. Any promotion, whether a promotio al fee, free item, etc, can be written off of taxes under advertising costs. The loss on shipping that happened would be put in with the original shipping costs if it was done with free shipping. With customer paid shipping, the shipping loss could be put in as a shipping loss. I hope this helps.
@@leebrown9658 That's what I thought, but I am not an accountant. I would think that he could either use the write off under his ebay business, or his RUclips business if he has that as a separate business entity since it was an experiment used for content creation here.
Yeah, it's a legitimate business expense.
How do you know how long your items have been listed when ebay automatically relists items every 30 days?
Even though they items are renewed, they still show the original listed date.
@CarolPainter-p5t i don't get charged for listings, they are free if you have a store
hi im trying to make a little money with just whats in my house and garage, it seems im just giving my things away after buying my label from ebay. also should i say yes to offers? most of my items are up for 10 dollars and they still want to offer a lower price also it always say buyer wants to use this shipping, do i have to?
I wouldn't do offers of items are $10 and under. For the most part, I don't list items in that price range because there's just no room to make any profit. Items in that price range I usually sell locally.
@@TheChaChingKing thank you
I just started selling on eBay after watching dozens of your vids. Now the post office here is on strike! Should I take all my listings down?
Your post office is literally on strike? Whoa! I wouldn't end the listings or take them down. Set your store handling time for 10 days or something. Then send the buyer a note and let them know what's going on.
@ thank you!!!!
@@TheChaChingKing Nope, just the option for charity..
I understand why you pulled the plug. It is too bad that you were getting clobbered so badly. It would have been interesting to know what would have happened with the other 9 items fully promoted for say, a month. Would they have all sold?
It's crazy that eBay would allow a percentage that puts you so clearly into the red. 😆
😆 I felt like I deserved a "big dummy" or two. 😆
Thank You for SHARING your experiment. I will stay far, far away from 100%.
😆 Probably a smart move
@@sammott8557 At 2%, it's not much risk. :-) But, setting it to 100% is like eating ice cream with mustard. You could do it...but don't.

Romans 6.23
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Mark 1.15
15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Hebrews 11:6
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

a link to flippin aint easy would be nice
I need to add that to my description when I get to a computer
I've never ever ever promoted an item. I just take good photos. A good title and clear photos have given me sales above others selling the same item.
I think those things are far more important for most items than promoting them.
I wonder if you double the price and then do a 50% promotion on it and then in a week.. drop the price back down and take off the promotion.. if that would help it sell.
Possibly. Promoting obviously did something more than just adding promoted listings.
Hopefully you don't get hit with the prompted listing halo effect and they come back & charge you PL on the other 3 sales due to the 30 day rule.
That's what I was thinking.
Exactly. The not being charged on the other two “organic” sales is baffling and goes against everything we know.
Where can I email a question to you. I’m a new reseller. It’s regarding switching from my personal FB marketplace to a business name to resell
Interesting…. Maybe 50% or whatever gets you close to break even on older inventory is the better way to go vs dropping prices?
Maybe. But I wouldn't recommend 100%
You are Brave. Love your videos!
I live at the intersection of Brave & WhatwasIthinking
Imagine if a person first clicked on your 100% promoted item, then went on to buy other non promoted items in your store but because they clicked on the promoted first the others get charged 100% also. They could of emptied your store and you would of owed tens of thousands of dollars, dangerous games
😆 Yikes! Fortunately, it doesn't work like that. The promotion percentage only applies to the individual item.
Maybe?
Ebay should really cap the percentage rate.
Agreed
So with the other items you sold afterwards, did you make up for the HORRENDOUS financial hit?
Unfortunately, you really never make up a loss like that except writing it off on your taxes. Even if you raise the price of other items and they sell, it could mean that those items were underpriced.
@@leebrown9658 Understood.
I someone originally saw it through a promoted listing, and then they purchase it within 30 days, yes.
@@TheChaChingKingBTW: I have very much enjoyed your channel. Very useful information.
They should have a calculator that makes you never lose.
You'd think that works be built in, right?
I was surprised that you only Sold 1 item. That really shows Promoted is a real WASTE.
Not really.
I ended up selling 3, which seems high, considering how long all of them had been sitting. Two of them selling without incurring the promotion fee seems crazy. Totally not worth it financially, but it's genuinely interesting to me.
That's a heck of an experiment!
It was!
All of the platforms want you to promote so they make more money off your items.
The higher you promote, the higher the visibility. They dont care if you make money or not because it allows them to make money.
100% agree
I think while under the promotion, the items you had there got more views than normal. When you set them back, the number of views kept it in the rotation even without the promotion's help.
It had to be something like that
Question - when you promote 100% are you saying that you are paying 100% of your listing price? For example, if you list it at $10 and promote at 100% = $10?
However, 1 sale out of 10 is only 10% sell through. I'm going to try it, but at 15%
Yes, 100% of the sale price went to eBay... plus the regular fees. I'd never, ever recommend it. 😆
Keep in mind that I ended up selling 3 items out of 10 that had all been listed for over 3 years. If never do it again, but it was still intriguing.
