I don’t know about sanity, but he’s such a spineless portrayal of an edgelord. He’s the epitome of ‘every accusation is a confession’ when he pretends to be indignant over the rings. As someone who enjoys quite dark and unmoored from RL morality fiction at times, the meta-narrative cosseting makes it absurdly shallow and not even really dark, just sort of petulantly gross in action and juvenile in tone. In some ways he’s realistic in his absurdity - DV/assault perpetrators are generally pretty pathetic in exactly this self-important way IMO - but the narrative isn’t in on the joke and it turns it into cringe. It wants to call on the specter of these types of actions for ‘edge’ but with all the stakes or intensity of a splat of vanilla icing drawn by crayon on a piece of cardboard.
