This is one of those films that has moments that feel far too real. The scene where she confronts him outside toward the end is beyond devastating.

This movie kind of broke me when I saw it in theaters. I had just had my first kid … and the story is that sometimes things just never get better. Sometimes people never get over things. It hurts.

I finally saw this, and it is without a doubt one of the best films of the decade. This film is exactly what I wanted out of Moonlight. I loved Moonlight, but it didn't hit me in an emotional way. Manchester by the Sea almost broke me. I related with Casey Affleck's character so much. There were even people crying in the theater. Which is something I've never seen before. This is an absolute masterpiece.

A rare movie, in a long time, where real life depiction makes you feel like you are watching something in your own community! Having experienced the loss of a 13 year old neighbor to a bike accident, this movie took me back to that time, place, loss & ultimately a little hope. Well done & powerful.

One of the things that struck me about this film (saw it tonight at a surprise screaning) was how darkly funny it was. The film as a whole is so emotionally heavy with what these characters have been through but some of the interactions, reactions, things that were said and things that happened were so genuine and naturally awkward or well placed without being forced it actually got frequent big laughs. Even with how depressing this film is at times it still manages to be genuinely humerous without any actual 'comedy'.

That's exactly how I felt when I first watched "Gone Baby Gone", and now when I saw this film as well, the performances are so genuine and personal that it makes you uncomfortable because you feel like you need to give these characters their own space to talk privately. I really love movies like that. They give more of a truthful insight into certain situations and certain people. I did also feel like I wanted to see more at the end. I did notice how subtle his acting was in the beginning which made me a bit annoyed because I guess I wanted him to express more emotion, but once they showed his past, I completely understood the choice of subtle emotions for his acting and I greatly appreciate it because, like you said, it's more realistic that way.

Just purchased the film and saw it for the first time and I have it 5 stars on Amazon because those giving the low ratings had no clue as to what they were watching. Usually, I like light hearted films which have happy endings but this one leaves the ending up to the viewer. Like Chris stated, the performances are fantastic and if you watch it, bring a box of tissues because you're going to need it. While Lee Chandler, really isn't expressive of his emotions even before the real tragic event which emotionally stunts him for good, that reality and how he even functions is amazing to me. Life goes on and sometimes you just have to make the best of it.

Just now watching this movie and while it was great in the emotional department and definitely feels “real” as far as life and the heartbreak it can bring, it is a slow burn and may not be as great as advertised to some. But the performances are amazing and toward the end the movie really pays off.

This movie has so much art I will say. But it hurts way too much to be enjoyed imo. I left it feeling like absolute crap. It ended and I was like "That's it?!".
This movie was 100% so real. But I think that's the problem. It's so real that there is no resolution and it sucks to watch. Like it's so well made that I literally wish I did not watch it.

I think that is somewhat uplifting. This movie feels like someone could sit with bad thoughts for way too long, and wonder what they could become , after experiencing tragedy.
The realism and the brutal honesty is what made me feel sort of uplifted in a weird way. Of course it's depressing af but it's a story really worth seeing in this way.

just finished watching this film and it really does feel heavy. At first I hesitated since it's a drama that's over 2 hours 10 mins long, but after watching I totally agree that the story can go on longer and I'll still be invested. The characters and the choices they make are just so human, which makes it such a rare film.

Chris is spot on, 3 quarters through this movie I was wondering how much was left, but then I thought to myself I couldn't care less because I would've watched 4 more hours of it. It's the type of film where near the ending I assumed it could've just cut to black at any moment, with 99% of movies you can tell exactly when it's ending and know a final shot when you see it, but with Manchester it just ended. Not after some big arc, not after all the problems were solved, not in a fairy tale happily ever after type of way, it simply just ended. Not many movies could do that and have it feel right, but the way Manchester was set up was so brilliant, the fact that it just made you feel like watching these peoples (very interesting and emotionally gripping) lives was amazing

(SPOILER ALERT) WOW!!! Picturesque, incredible performances and just so intriguing to watch. Once you understand Lee's character your just compelled to see it through whether you like him or not.
The structure of the film is essential because it leaves a piece out of the puzzle and forces the viewer to speculate what happened to Lee in the past. I loved the scenes where characters said "is that thee Lee Chandler" because it really helped build tension. I also really liked the chemistry between Patrick and Lee. You could tell they were both very close to Kyle and understood why he wanted to bring them together as family. Lee awkwardly looks out for Kyle and takes care of him and Patrick respects him as a guardian.
The ending is sad but realistic. Its clear Lee can't overcome his past and help raise Patrick in Manchester despite proving himself a capable guardian. But when he tells Lee he's looking for an apartment with a spare room its a bittersweet solution. It really left me hoping Lee can rebuild his life and move on.
