- CLEVELAND, EDWARD EARL, 88, born March 11, 1921, passed August 30, 2009 at Huntsville Hospital.
Cleveland had served the Seventh-day Adventist Church for more than 60 years as pastor, evangelist, church leader, teacher, civil rights leader, and mentor to thousands of preachers.
Cleveland began his pastoral ministry in 1942 in the Carolina Conference. He subsequently served as evangelist in the South Atlantic and Southern Union Conferences. From 1954-1977 he served as Associate Secretary of the Ministerial Association of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. After leaving the General Conference, he went to Oakwood College where he served as Director of the Department of Church Missions and as an Instructor in the Department of Religion.
Cleveland was preceded in death by his wife Celia Abney Cleveland.
Survivors include: his son and daughter-in-law, Earl and Pinkie Cleveland; Frieda Cleveland Steele and Veda Cleveland; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Cleveland; four grandsons; three granddaughters, one cousin, Dolly; and other relatives.

Dynamic man of faith. Sat in his class many days. The spirit of God was upon him and used him in a mighty way.
I’ve listened to a few of Elder E.E. Cleveland’s messages and truly I agree he was one of the greatest evangelists of all time. My mom was a student in one of his religion classes at Oakwood
O, there'll be joy when the work is done! His work is done and what a work he has done in the POWER of the Holy Spirit! His works will and do follow him in the lives and service of faithful Seventh-day Adventists whom he led to Christ, nourished in Christ and who are now left to carry the torch.
I've appreciated his books, including the Sabbath School Quarterlies he authored, his sermons, and his lectures. But most of all, I liked his ANNOINTED gospel appeals at the end of each sermon. In my opinion, in the power of his appeal lay his great evangelistic success. I can still hear his compelling appeals ringing in my ears and see the people coming from all around the auditorium. Pleasant memories.
I come back here everytime I remember God's goodness. Missing the old guards.
