Sony has been killing it with the G Master lenses lately. My amateur skills can't justify this lens but hopefully they come out with an updated 50mm f1.8. I'm hoping for the same quality as the 85mm f1.8, just in a 50mm version.

Just picked one up a few days ago. Literally nothing to complain about except the focus breathing. That said, I'm using it on an A7IV and it has a new breathing correction feature and this lens is supported. It does apply a very slight crop, but breathing is basically completely eliminated. Not sure if the SIII or A1 already have this, but if not hopefully they get it soon.

Great lens! People sometimes critique Sony about the size of the mount, but on the other hand, it looks like it helps in have a super-compact kit, especially when it comes to the lens. I don't see anything as compact as Tamron zooms (17-28, 28-75, 28-200, 70-180) or Samyang "Tiny but mighty" primes on Canon/Nikon/Panasonic. Some of those Samyang primes are even smaller than lens mount on Canon/Nikon :)

@@panzer3279 The f/1.0 is no longer in production, as of twenty years ago, which probably tells you a little bit about how useful that lens actually was. What makes you say that the RF f/1.2 is optically superior to the Sony? This lens has only just launched, but by all accounts it's optically fantastic too. What's there to be jealous of? It's lighter, smaller, and cheaper too. I wouldn't kick the RF lens out of bed, but it's possible to admire lenses from other manufacturers.

If you test a bunch of lenses you should test those on same camera body or at least on same sensors with same olpf.

Stellar sharpness at 1.2f across the frame means that the bokeh and 3d separation is not that great. Majority of new design lenses suffer from this trait, Sigma ART series were the first ones to show this...
11 aperture blades are a good thing though, for 1.2f 11 is probably a minimum in order to make those bokeh balls round from 2f to maybe f4

Its a shame Sony has taken the Fuji route of using plastic lens elements.
Asymmetric elements are expensive and heavy but much preferred...

“As with any GMaster lens the construction is very rugged…”. I don’t agree with this though. I have several GM lenses and they all feel like they are not going to last very long- plasticky and feels cheap. The resale value is very poor too, so I just decided to keep them. That being said the IQ is awesome, it’s just the build quality that is dubious. I had a Sony Zeiss lens 2 years ago and it felt premium and heavyduty compared to GM lenses.

watching some classical movies, I can see focus breathing lens a lot, and don't really think that focus breathing is that much of an issue for video
for focus stacking - yes, that's an issue, sadly

Owning a RF 50 1.2 I think the breathing is similar. Considering that they share the same min focus distance and the Canon has a 0.19x reproduction ration ( 0.17x for the Sony) I even think the Canon breathe more. I don't use it for film making so at least the Canon gets a better reproduction ratio.
From what I've seen the Canon may have less lateral chromatic aberration. It may also have better sharpness in the corner but at the expense of a worse vignetting performance.
From a price perspective the Canon is more expensive but since it is out for about 2.5 years you can get it for far cheaper. I just got mine a month ago for around $1740 (VAT removed and price converted from euro to USD) so it was quite a bit cheaper.
From my point of view this new release didn't change anything. I still love my RF 50. It is so sharp wide open, has an amazing rendering and has a really fast AF at normal distances. It is quite a bit heavier but i think it balances beter on my R5 than the Sony on their alpha bodies. The one who won't agree with this statement is my back.
From an AF point of view the Sony seems way faster when you change focus from min focus distance to infinity. But what's the point ? My RF is already capable to track a dog running at you on my R5 and you don't use a 50 1.2 to shoot wildlife don't you? I also think that the focus on the Canon will be more accurate because the focus group has a very long travel inside the lens.
Finally I will point that Sony had to use 4 motors to achieve this and lots of exotic lens elements. So without the concurrence this would have been a $2500 lens I think. I also wonder about the reliability because it only needs to have a problem with one motor and the lens become useless. The only thing I'm jealous is the internal focusing system on the Sony. Because of that I had to buy a great UV filter from day one for my RF 50.
