@@theblode1337 *That's incorrect.* Racism isn't about _any_ decision, it's about focusing on detrimental traits or about oppressing a group for the advantage of another.
What you _might_ be thinking of is discrimination, but discrimination isn't necessarily a negative connotation. "We have discriminating tastes" refers to people having "higher standards." So if someone says, "ethnic group B is lazy, but ethnic group A is hard working and well educated" and that person doesn't belong to group A, it isn't racism. Even saying "group B is lazy" doesn't refer to racism if you're using facts and/or statistics to support your position.
Pointing out that Germans have always made great beers and pianos regardless of what country they've moved to isn't racism; it's just a fact that history shows.

    • @jvjjjvvv9157
      @jvjjjvvv9157 2 месяца назад +1

By your own admission, there is a difference. You have written that racism is 'about focusing on detrimental traits or about oppressing a group for the advantage of another', and that's two different criteria, two completely different definitions. In one specific context one requirement may be met, and in another context the other requirement may be met. The point being that there are different ways to understand the concept, and silly debates such as this one rely precisely on conflating different ideas for the purpose of equivocation. It's not very different from when you hear people say 'well but evolution is just a theory'.
More specifically, if racism consists of having a negative feeling or unfair prejudice that relies excessively on ethnicity, then of course a black person who doesn't like Asians is being racist. The girl could have said that. But if there is no oppression, no discrimination, the person doesn't hold any power over those people, and therefore those other people can barely experience any negative consequences as a result, then it is hardly what we call racism when they think of centuries of enslaving and discriminating a group of people for profit. And the girl could have also said that.
I mean, I don't know about you, but I've seen black people joke derisively at how white people talk or walk, and if I have to use the same word for that than what I use to refer to early Australian settlers having aboriginals on leashes, then there is definitely a problem with the language.

I really hate this re-definition of the word "racist". A "Racist" is someone who believes that there is a measurable difference between the different ethnicities; that there are literally separate races of humans. For example, they'd believe African-descendant people to be more predisposed towards violence or that Asian-descendant people would be harder workers and so on.
If you are not a racist, then you believe that we are all ultimately the same as humans and our differences are either superficial or cultural.
Power dynamics have nothing to do with it. It is about a person's world view.

Philosophy student here. What many anti-racism activists are trying to do is defining racism as "discrimination of a minority ethnic group by the majority ethnic group" instead of "discrimination based on ethnicity".
It's important to see that if you accept their definition, then it is in fact a valid argument for example to say that black people cannot be racist towards white people. The issue really is though that this definition of racism is at best misleading or possibly even dishonest. The important point is: Even though the argument itself is actually not fallacious... if you think about it, it becomes a very insignificant statement. To illustrate that: Suppose that we define traffic collisions as "accidents that involve two blue cars crashing into each other". In this case it would be a valid argument to say that a motorcycle crashing into another motorcycle or even a red car crashing into a blue car isn't actually a traffic collision. It will now of course be a very insignificant statement to say that 100% of all traffic collisions involve blue cars, when we have already predefined them that way.
We can do the same thing with racism: Let's now for example define racism as "discrimination of black people by white Canadians aged between 7 and 17". Just like before, it would be a valid argument to say that in this case only white Canadians aged between 7 and 17 can be racist. But the thing is: Should we accept this definition? No we shouldn't, because even though it is logically valid, it's misleading, since most people simply have a different definition.
So what is the actual problem? It's mere word games resulting in a misunderstanding. The one group is making a valid, but misleading (and often insignificant) argument, while the other is trying to disprove the argument, but failing at it, because they do not discuss the definitions first. I personally would either reject a definition of racism that does not include the discrimination of all ethnicities... Or if someone insist on using their definition for racism: Go with it for the sake of argument, but make it very clear to the audience, what definition for racism is used within the framework of the debate and then discuss it. Otherwise you will talk about completely different things.

@@tadeuszadach5732 yes, that's pretty much what I'm saying. But I think it's important to realize that sometimes it makes sense to use definitions that are uncommon in order to express a complex thought. You just have to be clear about what you actually want to say. I just think that some activists remain intentionally vague and don't want the definitions to be clear, so that they can hide fallacies in their arguments. For example they often tend to switch definitions in the middle of the argument depending on what they currently need (equivocation fallacy). That tactic actually requires some skill, which is why I wouldn't brush it aside as stupidity. I genuinely think they are straight up lying, because they feel they can persuade more people that way.

South African Apartheid is a good example of this: even if a white person was treated badly by black people there, the white people still held all the legislative and judicial power and so we're systemically racist against black people. The sociological definition of racism, like the term minority, is dependent upon power. In South Africa there are less white people than black people but black people are considered the minority because of having less power within that society; i.e. white people being able to institute an apartheid despite their smaller numbers in South Africa. Racism is racial bias enacted on minorities from the majority. Race based biases enacted on the majority from someone in a minority is prejudice.
The public has warped the definition of racism similarly to what people are doing now with the word sociopath. There is no diagnosis of sociopathy and often times, but not exclusively, what people would refer to as sociopathic behavior would fall under Antisocial Personality Disorder. People who aren't knowledgeable about a field disseminating incorrect/inaccurate information is what many times makes the idea of common knowledge a misnomer.

In reality the children growing up with gender identity issues are always going to exist and making them feel invalid is un-american. Also I don't know what equity classes are, but I think you mean equality? Once again I don't see how that is a bad thing. I think children should grow up being kind and tolerant so that might stick in their adult years. So, in summary a state reallocating funds from sports programs that really don't send all that many kids to college and using that money on education isn't bad. ZONG is saying that since coffee has caffeine in it, it would only be logical to assume that iced coffee would also have caffeine because it's just coffee with ice. This is a comparison to her knowing that hating an asain based on race is racist but thinking that a hispanic hating an asian based on race isn't racist even though it's just racism from another race. So ZONG is saying that since this person can't understand racism is racism even if performed by a different race; she would then also not understand that iced coffee has caffeine like knowing there's caffeine in normal coffee because the only difference is ice.
The public has warped the term racism similarly to what people are doing now with the word sociopath. There is no diagnosis of sociopathy and often times, but not exclusively, what people would refer to as sociopathic behavior would fall under Antisocial Personality Disorder.

My point on South Africa wasn't that it's the only place experiencing racism, it was that laymen's definitions of words (of which are often found on Wikipedia) are not always very accurate and often lack the nuance that the most complete definition has; e.g. many people think minority just means whichever group is smaller in number but white people in South Africa are smaller in number (but large in power which is what makes a group the majority group) than black people.

Because they have the power... The shit is hilarious because they do not judge you by you individuality but by the group you belong... It means that: even if you are homeless and poor... You can't be racist to a rich black man because you belong in a powerful "group"... The shit is hilarious because there's always something to justify their actions and it's even a contradiction... When they scream: "we want racism to end" according to their own logoc they are only fighting against the system and not the individual level... In any words: they are nkt fighting for what is fair, but to benefit them!.
It is also a contradiction because they hate when a action of a person has different consequences than a white man because they belong in another... But in the same time: your actions receive different consequences because you bwlong in an other group... It is also a double standard and hypocritical because they hate it but they do it anyway what is hilarious!
I can't debate with this... The environment is very toxic... I am gonna follow the methods of morgan freeman .. If they have a problem with him screw them... Their methods only made it worse and proved that they aren't fighting for other groups but only to benefit themselves...
It doesn't matter, in anyways we will have minority and majority...
The only way that could solve this is segregation(what i am against it because i believe that we as a human we need to learn to live to what is different... How can we involve to another civilization and maybe live with another civilization ?) because to them majority has the power therefore they are the oppressor(i am having a feeling of that ideology where: if you are poor it's because you are opressed and the rich is the oppressor...) it doesn't solve anything, it just blames the majority... Research suggest that in 2044 "white" will become a minority... Thefore they can not be racist and are opressed... But the problem is: are they gonna follow the same logic or are they going to change them ?
In both scenario we do not win... The majority will always be guilty of anything... The only way that could solve this is segregation where they have their own power(what i do not agree because as i said: this is stupid and we need to involve as a thinking being...)

All of the comments here that are saying "as a hispanic" or "as a black person" before stating the obvious that all races can be racist.
That pisses me off because if I said "as a white person, all races can be racist" I would just be ignored or told to shut the fuck up, it also pisses me off because the people saying this believe that their opinion on this topic matters more because of their race, and it pisses me off the most that there are way too many people who agree that their opinion on this subject is more valuable.
I understand that anybody saying that is essentially trying to say "I am also against this bullshit" and I appreciate that. But it demonstrates just how deep this problem goes. The choice of wording is either incredibly poor or indicative of the fact that people truly believe that white people aren't allowed to talk about racism. Basically, stop saying "as a whatever the fuck" as a qualifying statement. Your identity does not add value to your opinions or your point. My personal guess is maybe it's because the internet takes on a more "American perspective" where some groups are universally perceived as a minority, and thus more "valid". When in fact these same exact groups are dominant in other populations around the world.
The public has warped the term racism similarly to what people are doing now with the word sociopath. There is no diagnosis of sociopathy and often times, but not exclusively, what people would refer to as sociopathic behavior would fall under Antisocial Personality Disorder. People who aren't knowledgeable about a field disseminating incorrect/inaccurate information is what many times makes the idea of common knowledge a misnomer.

Key word is "typically", just because minorities are typically racialized by the majority does not mean they cannot be racist themselves.
People are individuals, not just conglomerates of power, that's literally the rational the Nazis used to oppress Jewish people despite being the majority.

Yes 100 percent hands down. But just a little critique. Specifically speaking in the us, White people do not experience racism. Racism, just like any other ism for example (texturusm, colorism) was made and engraved into this society for the advancement of the majority group. The minority group can not exert that system onto the majority. The -ism implies there is a system of power imbalance. What white people experience is racial prejudice. Which is not condonable. It is weird and disgusting. But racism is purely a minority experience in this country.
