I'm so glad you mentioned Buteyko!! This is the method I was pointed towards before I knew I had VCD. Back then, I was misdiagnosed as having asthma. Now that I have a correct diagnosis, I have been combining Buteyko breathing techniques with VCD rescue breathing techniques. It has been helpful for me. However, I would love to explore the myofascial release you mentioned.

Interesting. My son sometimes gets really short of breath after a while when running hard for some time. It always ends really short after stopping. It doesn't really stays. The PEF is around 750 and is the same after running and training. Maybe this is whats it's about.
Hi Sharon, Firstly, I was brought here as "You might be interested in this." After I clicked on a video of midget wrestling. Just kidding! I had a frightening episode of Laryngospasm, my first, at 62 years old and felt "this is the end, I'm not going to come out of this." I am hoping my story will help others. My airway was completely sealed shut for about 10 seconds, then...over a period of about 20 additional seconds, the vocal fold s l o w l y opened up to allow me to breathe. I went to an emergency clinic to get checked out (because I was baffled as to why this happened) and the 'tech' who saw me did not diagnose me correctly.. or maybe she was simply too young/or had never seen a patient who had gone through this. She actually said, "We can't diagnose you now, since it isn't happening now. So come see us when it happens again." Wow!! Right??!! If it happens again, I'll either die from it, or it will relax and I'll be fine long before I could drive to the clinic! I went home and googled and found EXACTLY what happened to me! Laryngospasm,!!! HERE is MY QUESTION (after I make a statement ;-) When this happened to me, I was NOT drinking, NOT eating, NOT exercising.. just sitting in my car...when fairly suddenly (within 4-5 seconds) I got that "Feather in the throat" feeling... like something was irritating it and it kinda tickled then...at about 6 seconds in... the vocal fold COMPLETELY CLOSED!! I didn't have any idea why this might be happening. Now- I have had MANY episodes in my adult life of water/wine, etc, "going down the wrong way" and dealing with the vocal fold going into "self protect mode" and gasping for air... BUT THIS, as I said, was not triggered by water, or food, etc. I think it may have been A: a 'dry' throat. B: dust/pollen in the air. It was a warm 75 deg day and I was outside. BUT WHY did my vocal fold shut so tightly when there was not threat of liquid/food in my mouth? HERE IS MY QUESTION AS IT RELATES TO THIS VIDEO: I workout 3-4 times a week, I do moderate weight training and cardio. I was freaked out about working out and.. the "WHAT IF." It was hellish to try to breathe with a resting heart rate, I can't imagine this happening with an elevated heart/breathing rate!! This video did not mention any of the ways that exercise exacerbates (say that fast 37 times!) this occurance. I realize you want people to contact you for a consultation.. but I was hoping for some examples. So why would exercise make it worse, or make it occur? Thank you. PS: I love your hair! Hi Suzan's husband: Without knowing your full medical history, it certainly could have been due to the environmental irritants/factors that you mentioned. To answer your question about exercise: If what you experienced was due to environmental factors, it doesn't necessarily mean that it would also happen with exercise. They can be two different things. Sounds like you described laryngospasm which is not really the same as Exercise-Induced Vocal Cord Dysfunction - which, in my experience working with patients, can result from the person either breathing in excess of what the body's needs are at the time of exercise (often hyperventilation) and/or breathing from the wrong place, too frequently, breath holding, etc. Emotional factors/stress can factor in as well. Hope this information was helpful! And, by the way, thanks for the compliment on my hair! It was challenging getting used to 1) the grey, 2) the length, and 3) the curls (I usually blew dry my hair). Now, I'm all natural! Loved the video, Doug!
I have had this happen! I keep water an enhaler(in case it’s my asthma) as well as cough drops with me every where I go….. I also can tell if I’m extra stressed sometimes I’ll take something to calm me down that’s not heavy… stress, acid reflux, allergies all can be factors too… even post nasal drip for vocal chord dysfunction. Good luck!!
