Well, engineers are all about details, specifics and critical thinking when it comes to tech. That's how their mind works. And they mostly sceptics. They cautiously speak about things they don't specialize in and they don't try to pretend being prophets and predict distant future. If they do, they are the Cheif Engineers! Like Elon.

So, it's 1000 tons for each person. Does it sound much? Yes, but only for people here, where we have everything already. On Mars, there is no water, no air, no food, no houses, no furniture, nothing. First, let's just calculate how much air and water one person consumes every day. Then, the food. Then, fuel for generating electricity for heat, light, machinary (sun energy is obv not enough), vehicles, serving robots, ect... But it nothing compared to the weight of materials: concrete, steel, glass, plastic, rubber and other needed for constraction of giant dome, living facilities, ware houses and spaceport for arriving starships. And who's gonna build anyway? Exhausted and sick people in a deadly radioactive desert with only 37% of earth gravity? And what for? Resources? - No much resources on Mars. Reaserch? - The probes and robots can do it. Tourism? Ha-ha. No, only for Musk's ambitions, while he stays here and inspires feefteen years old... If we want to do it right, we need: 1. Develop new type of rocket engine that will provide 10 times greater speed, so we can get to Mars much faster than 6 months. 2. Solve the Space and Mars radiation problem, so we get to the destination and stay there as healthy as we have been on Earth. 3. Engineer constraction robots with next generation AI and send them to Mars firts, alongside with materials and machinary, so they will build all human life support infrastructure from scratch and make it ready for us. 4. Develop terraforming technologies in advance, then build an equipment, send there and start process long before people will start to populate the red planet. 5. Solve the gravity issue in space and on Mars. 6. Develop selfsustainable life technologies. If we do it Musk's way many, many people will die. It is very stupid to send people on 6 months jorney exposed to the sun gamma rays and then the poison dust of Mars desert, to build an extremely complex structures in a third of Earth's gravity and in a huge day/night temperature difference, while they are physically sick and emotionally exhausted. That's not just hard, it's impossible. We're not going to build selfsustainable city on Mars with today's tech not with millions tons of transported cargo, not with billions. That' pure dreaming. I want that humanity will populate the Galaxy, but only if real scientists will work on it, not some ambitious, half crazy dude.
