I will never understand how the letter "e" and "i" became conflated in English... In most languages "e" is pronounced like the "e" in "set", never as in "sea". To phonetically write a word that is pronounced like the English "see", you would write "sii". An "a" being pronounced "ei", and "i" being pronounced "ai" makes it even worse... "o" = "ou", u = yu, y = wai... In the end all vowels in English are weird, and never consistent...
