Chevy Colorado: No Start, No Crank

  • In this video I come into work early because I started to second guess a diag I made on a Chevy Colorado. It wont crank over and I was 99% sure it was the ignition switch. I rerun through my steps just to confirm then make the call and replace the ignition switch as well as relearn the security system. -Enjoy!

This is a common problem on the Colorado and about a $500 repair at the Dealer. My Colorado has only acted up once with the no start. Friend of mine had the repair done as it kept no starting on him. Good to know about the airbag release on these. I used some fluid film over the weekend and I "baaahhhhed" in my head while using it. Thank Eric!

Thank you for the longer video, I love to watch your process as much as your diagnosis. Being a home guy that has spine issues and was once interested in being a tech and even started school for it, it really helps me seeing all your repairs no matter how trivial. I'm 51 years old and back in 1986 these electronic cars didn't exist yet and wanting to start maintaining my own modern vehicles your videos are a huge help! I'm finally feeling better for a time I don't know how long that will last and I need to learn as much as I can and you are the best, at least the best I've found to watch. Very informative and great at what you do, so learning from the best is important. Keep up the good work, we need you out here!!!!

Mr. O, you are an inspiration. I’ve been binge watching your videos for a couple of weeks. I no longer work on cars, but I maintain a fleet of tow trucks.
Not only changing filters and fluids and changing brakes, but most commonly, electrical problems.
Following your attitude of starting simple has helped me tremendously.
Most electrical problems have been result of when the tow truck body was mounted, when a wire is hokey pokey’d looking for power or is chaffed because it wasn’t secured properly. Your approach of looking where someone’s fingers were, has made chasing these issues down a lot easier.
Only problem is, is that when I’m working on a truck, I talk to myself out loud.

These trucks are notorious for the ignition switch. I just did a diag on a 2005 Colorado that had a bad ignition switch. Without removing the wheel I just changed the plastic switch at back of ignition since the barrel was ok from the new barrel, and boom started then wouldn’t stay running. Someone cut the security wire trying to bypass the security start. Connected with and boom still runs perfect. You think they’d recall..Thanks for the video.

I always had the illusion that mechanics had a special tool for every troublesome clip or fastener and that I was struggling because I was a silly shade-tree mechanic using incorrect tools. Glad to see mechanics struggle with that crap too! Lol

Thank you for all the great vlogs. I hope the road work don't redirect all the rain water into your lot and shop.

I love the "No crank No start". If it doesn't crank it ain't gonna start. lol Are new car steering wheels easier to remove? Cause I've only done early 80's cars and they fight me every single time.
This is how you know a great mechanic from a poor one. Only a great mechanic stays up at night thinking about work. I hope you have some vacation time set aside Eric. I think you may need it.
You sang you hate your job some days, but that isn't true. You wouldn't be half as good at what you do if you hated it. We all know you love what you do and I enjoy you letting us come all for the ride. Cheers.

I can't count the amount of times I've woken up at 3am because I've forgotten something. Usually it's the cat scratching at the outside door. Good job.

I have a 2009 Colorado very well done. I will attempt. Now I just have to fix yaw rate, passenger front wheel speed communication, steering angle, air bags, no ding or radio more than half the time, and the rack, tire pressure monitor, and temp sensor goes to zero at first warm up. Reset ASAP with scan tool then fine the rest of day. FUN FUN. thank you

Dr.O was in a great mood today, I would have loved to work with him. Not that I wouldn't love to work with him on anyday lol. Thanks for the great videos Eric !

That was cool, I got up at 5am this morning too, and watched this video. I used to have that same dexterity in my hands as you have Eric, then that awful arthritis came along and the dexterity is gone. Great job on the Colorado, those things considered absolute junk in Australasia. Best avoided.

Agreed, I like the way the camera vibrated when Eric rolled the camera around or dropped tools on it. Made it feel as we were literally on the cart.

Arnulfo Sandoval a more personal experience, being a mechanic isn’t clean or smooth.
