I was a HUGE Wolverine fan as a kid. I had an Art Adams Wolverine poster. In Jr. High me and my friends would have random Wolverine battles in the hallways of our school between classes and at lunch. It started off face to face where we would see each other in the hall and one of my friends would shout, “Wolverine fight!” and I would squint my eyes and replied with, “Snikt!”. My claws were my index, middle and ring fingers. We would slash at each other’s torso and arms. Never the face. It was usually two of us fighting but sometimes four of us would go at it. When I told my family this story they had the biggest laugh over it. My daughter said,
“😮MG Daddy you were a big NERD!” All I could do was laugh at myself. My daughter never looked at me the same 🤣😂.
I was maybe 15 when Wolverine’s first on going series came out. I was sooo excited and then I was quickly let down. I liked Buscema’s art but when he drew Wolverine… I was very disappointed. I continued buying the book for the character but I think I hung in for 10/15 issues. I couldn’t take the art anymore. I couldn’t understand why John Byrne or the new talent at the time Jim Lee (he was drawing Punisher at the time).
I have to agree with you on some of the Wolverine covers. The McFarland Hulk cover is really overrated but as a teen it blew my mind. There has been many GREAT Wolverine covers but two of my favorite has to be the X-Men cover from the Days of Future Past where old man Wolverine and grown woman Kitty was standing in front of the wanted poster. John Byrne was the best. My other favorite cover is the Marvel Comics Presents Weapon X #79. B.W. Smith has created many great Wolverine covers. I hope you forgive my long story. I just started reminiscing.

How can you not like the Wolverine 8 homage cover to the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie twins?

  • @charliedogg7683

The Morlocks were named after the underground-dwelling cannibals from the H.G.Wells novel "The Time Machine" (although the X-Men Morlocks don't eat people as far as I know). Uncanny X-Men #190 is interesting because the villain is Kulan Gath, a long-time Red Sonja nemesis who has been used a lot in Dynamite's Red Sonja series - he's an example of those rare characters who migrate from one publisher to another.
I like certain Wolverine stories due to the writer and/or artist but I've never collected any of his ongoing series.

And anyone who’s interested in Silver Samurai should be searching for late 70s Marvel Team-Ups. He appeared in two Black Widow issues as well as a five part story with Widow, Nick Fury and Shang-Chi…and was even involved in the issue co-starring the cast of SNL (when John Belushi was in the cast). I can remember buying that issue when I was 10 and not knowing anything about SNL at the time.

I'm a huge Wolverine fan (he's right under my favorite character, Batman), so I typically think that the cooler covers are worth the price. I can understand the argument against that, because I've seen some covers of other characters that go for quite a bit of money and question why anyone would pay those prices. Like I learned in econ in college, something is only worth what somebody will pay for it. But kudos on getting that amazing cover for a great price. These stories have been reprinted in Brazil in a new collection called "X-Men Saga", and it's the first time we can fully read them because, in the 80s and 90s, stories were cut so many of them could fit in one issue. And the format of our comics used to be smaller, so the editors had to cut a lot of the text.

Sometimes a cover resonates immediately upon release -- ASM #300, Hulk #340 MSH Secret Wars #8 and ASM #316!! Many of us see this immediately and buy multiples! --And many other books catch on a lot later and grow on you, like Wolvie #8. I remember thinking it was "cute" but not iconic. Fortunately I put together the run before the price shot up and have 2 nice copies for only a few bucks! Funny how they look more appealing once they become somewhat valuable!!

I absolutely love Wolverine! #63 of his series was my very first comic and I just love his character, the mysterious backstory, and his no care attitude. Now having said that, I do agree that covers featuring him are overpriced, but they are iconic. In the 90s he was everywhere because it sold books. I don't love that I have to overpay just to fill out my collection of a random book he is featured on. My own dark confession, I don't love Deadpool. When he went up against Cable and X-Force was cool, now he is everywhere and I could care less. I guess that just the way it goes. Great pick ups by the way!

That would be one of my fav Wolvy covers, and one I don't own yet but would like too. I had it on a favourite t-shirt that I wore till it fell apart as a teenager. Funny thing I always remember as a kid then: No-one I knew (in Ireland) knew how to pronounce Wolverine until the cartoon reached us... up until that point everyone pronounced it (Wolver-eye-n, like iodine). Books are appropriately priced if it's what the market will bear. A bit of a "cop out" answer, I know, but it's true. The thing with all those Wolverine covers commanding a higher price is that so many of them are considered to be iconic. Other comic characters have iconic covers that cause a book's value to be elevated despite the fact that those books aren't really keys either (Batman 227 comes to mind); it's just that Wolverine has so many more iconic covers than most other characters. Love the idea of Friday videos! Always looking forward to your content!

X-men 172 was the first X-men title I bought in the 80s. I'd later go on to get them all from GS1 onward....then 30% of that collection was destroyed by rats in my storage facility. Including GS1 and 94 😢. Keep in mind I paid 80s prices for these. I'm slowly rebuilding, but ugh...prices now are hurting.
I also don't love Wolverine. I used to, but they have reconned him so much and seriously, bone claws are stupid. His healing factor used to be cool, but now....its ridiculous.

Ugh, that’s a horror story losing your collection to rats. I don’t mind his bone claws but I agree the extent of his healing powers are just way too extreme.

You are not alone sir, growing up a huge X-Men fan I always thought of him as a jerk and that he was too unstoppable. I do like him, but he's not my favorite. And yes, I do feel he took away from every other amazing deep character.

I love hulk 340 because I have loved super heroes all 20 years of life thanks to my amazing father. However before I was into comic's I always heard how Todd changed Spider-man for the better. So Todd has a special place in my heart as it built my bond with my dad even better.

I do think the wolverine covers are overpriced. However, I will give credit that they are priced higher because people actually want the books (even if for the cover), vs some of the inflated prices because books are “keys” (referencing minor)when no one would have collected the books I’d they weren’t “keys”.

I think I few the same or similar as you to Wolverine. I think he is great, has his place, but he is not to the level everyone boosts him to. I have always liked him more in team ups or as part of a team. For example, I loved Wolverine in Spider-Man Vs Wolverine.
I do like a lot of his covers though. Can’t totally agree with you on that. They just look cool.
I also feel the same about Deadpool. He’s a fun character, but I think his popularity is over inflated

Overrated or overexposed? The 1990s did that a lot.

Yes we do tend to overvalue some books for the covers only. While I do love great art on these books my real love is the great stories that leave a lasting impression years or decades later. I agree that Wolverine can be a bit over-hyped but his back story resonates with a lot of people. Is that because of the violence associated with the character? Most likely it is but Wolverine is a unique character in the world of comic books and definitely over used especially back in the 90's. Nice haul and I share your love of the X-Men especially the Chris Claremont years. That Hulk #340 is also homage to death as are other great Todd McFarlane covers.

Those are some really excellent X-Men books. I get the overhype of Wolverine, and he is one of my favorite X-Men. His face was *_EVERYWHERE_* in the 80s and 90s. To be honest, I think he was more popular than Superman or Batman at the time.

I thought the same thing about Hulk in the 70s and 80,s..And I loved the Hulk..But, Wolverine and Hulk together…again. Too cool.MCU big boys.I’d get what I could of Hulk comics, but could not for the life of me understand why Avengers was so cheap..That’s why I have 1-100 and glad I do now..
X-men FF Spider-Man, those were the cool ones.. Friends didn’t think Avengers was to cool….then..But I do know no where one 1-100 of X-men comics are..not mine though..

A lot of those Wolverine covers you showed demand a premium because they're hard to find in high-grade. The Wolverine 8 has that solid Blue background showing every tick. I love Wolverine and he's my favorite X-Men. I always loved how he would rip on Scott because I couldn't stand Scott Summers lol. My favorite Wolverine covers are Eight, Seventeen, and Twenty-Seven. I love the bright colors they make Wolverine really pop. A cover I'm not huge on is ASM 316. I think that cover IMO is overrated.

Speaking as a person whose favorite character is Wolverine I wouldn't say you are wrong in that his covers go for a premium and some of them are overrated (looking at you Hulk 340) but I think you run into this with any character of sufficient popularity. Wolverine is just odd because he is not Gold/Silver age so he doesnt really compare to alot of the other "big" names but his popularity puts him in the conversation (and book bloat) of characters like Batman and Spiderman. My favorite Wolverine cover is Wolverine Origins #1 the Michael Turner variant. Its not a big money book but I think its absolutely amazing.

I have to say that I prefer the MCU wolverine play by Hugh Jackman and not the cartoon version of wolverine. Comics can be valued very much by the cool covers. And why not it's art. I look forward to your videos and stories in the books while you are showing them. Thanks for the entertainment and knowledge.

I'd say a true wolverine fan has hulk 180 181 I must be I have two copies of each. Without a doubt he has the most demand on the secondary market out of the xmen. Of course his key books fetch a premium.
