Personally, I'm just worried about the coming lack of genetic diversity as strains in apple growth that are inefficient for taste and growth are removed over time despite their importance in preventing diseases or improving plant immunities.
The added costs of patents and trademarks should make sure that generic breeds can compete by being lower price. That in turn should actually increase genetic diversity over what we've had in the past. With patented apples, even if you don't sell as many as generic apple growers, the orchard can stay in business because they can charge more per apple and some people will pay more. Whereas if it's all generic, you're more likely competing purely on efficiency. If you have two boxes that are just labelled "apples" without trademarks, and one is $1 while the other is $2, people won't buy the $2 ones even if they're secretly better, because it's too hard to distinguish them.

I so love the Vox videos on advertising. It's a great way to delve into the inner workings of the human mind, and how advertising has tried to hack into it. Hopefully, with more and more of these studies, we can figure out more conscious ways of advertising.
Where are the cons of such practices?????? If you guys were so limited in the depth and coverage of content due to your sponsor(s), that's just unfortunate. However, if this was due to the "recommended" time limit of a normal VOX episode or basically almost any other reason, this is a major hindsight on your end. I love your videos and I really appreciate the great work you guys do over there, but seriously this episode has such gaping holes in its content that I believe I, as a member of the community watching this video, should bring this up at least in the comments section. (I am also aware that VOX's Climate Lab has made a video on food wastage and a part of it, if my memory serves me correctly, does address this issue. So, maybe at least briefly mention the general cons of such practices and also direct them to that video from climate lab or something.) At this day and age of such polarity in the social structure all over the world, lets promote looking at things from a more balanced perspective. Edit: Just checked Climate Lab's video and they only seem to touch on it as that is not the main point of their video. This is all the more the reason for you guys to let the world know what the consequences of such stringent selection criterion does to our society.
Some of the apples aren't that easy to grow and maintain (honey crisp, while delicious, are a pain to harvest and keep in a decent state due to how delicate they are, so they don't bring in as much revenue). Too many orchards of the same fruit leads to limited biodiversity. Very bad if they all catch the same disease. Yes I know I'm lucky but on the other hand we have a science teacher whose cologne smells like full-cream milk powder and shouts at me with a mouthful of food *and* when he was our homeroom teacher, spent *fourty-five* minutes *literally arguing* with us and getting all *sarcastic* over his insistence of the girls wearing formal skirts for our concert performance. We were *dancing* around to pop he didn't really expect us to agree on flashing our panties on stage did he?
No he taught me how to brew apple cider and sour seed-planted apples and Johnny Appleseed and then we talked about grapes and wine and his wine-brewing hobby like for real XDXD

It's right after a test and he still has to keep you guys busy until the bell rings. Can you blame him? Maybe he likes longer skirts? Or maybe he likes skirts that look fun yet practical? I dunno, skirts are a tricky subject.
@lunayen I wish you were right, but what I wrote was hardly a grain of sand on the beach. Even the staff hates him and one of my friends moved away because she couldn't stand him. Also that is the science teacher, not the math. The math is awesome
Really love this series, keep them coming.
I find this racist against other fruits, how about bananas
Gonna need those extra strains when Cavendish gets in trouble. RIP Big Mike.
The Cavendish banana cannot be bred because it doesn't reproduce. We just trim and replant to create more trees of it.
I find your comment racist against proper grammar. How about learning about run-on sentences and punctuation?
I love bananas.
Bananas are good.
Are you my mummy?
Also racist to cheese
I so love the Vox videos on advertising. It's a great way to delve into the inner workings of the human mind, and how advertising has tried to hack into it. Hopefully, with more and more of these studies, we can figure out more conscious ways of advertising.
Not doing that
Americans eat fruits?
ONLY Honeycrisp apples, no other fruits
Holding an apple makes me feel like a god. I am Kira.
It's always best to grow a few generic wild apples here and there so the apples won't go the way of the banana.
I'm eating an apple as we speak. A Fuji apple in fact. My fav apple 💖🍎
Pink lady apples have always been my favourite. Gala apples are great too!
Red delicious apples aren't as popular where I live. I can't re-call if I've ever even had one.
I always underestimate how good an apple taste before I eat one
The Rome apples are my favorite along with Fuji and Galla apples. The Rome apples are like a somewhat but a sweet but regular apple like a Galla. They are usually a burgundy red and have red lines inside of the apple themselves. My only peeve about them is the tough skin, and you can’t have any syrup or honey with them, basically anything sweet
i remember seeing two kinds of apples in our refrigerator and i thought the more fancy looking red delicious was... delicious. i was wrong.
I found cosmic crisp apples at the store today and IMMEDIATELY recognized them from this video 💀
SweetTango apples HIT.
literally when they said “honey crisp” i started cheering lmao
I love Fuji apples and Envy apples! 🍎
Pacific rose and envy are my personal favourites
My mom brought home sweetango apples and my God they were amazing. It's my new favorite
4D Chess Try Juici apples! They are ten times more crunchy and flavorful than sweettango
Cuz that's exactly what this country needs - branded produce, at an ever increasing costs.
Forever loyal to honeycrisp because of Minnesotan pride ✊✊😔😔
Macintosh apples are my favorite variety (although i never have and never will purchase an Apple™ product)
So I wonder when the Cosmiccrisp will be in the stores?
The winning slogan: "Hungry for apples?"
Red Delicious is still the ONLY apple i will eat. its always sweet and crunchy, I've never had any of those problems.
I LOVE Granny Smith and Fuji Apples 😍 especially with cinnamon and peanut butter
"... First grown on an orchard in Iowa, and originally named after it's founder, Mr. Delicious."
always loved pink ladies and honeycrisps as a kid
snapdragon and sweetango are amazing
Lemystere Man Carlo c Try Juici apples! Ten times crunchier and more flavorful!
Two of my uncles own apple orchards. I routinely help them sell. I have eaten so many Romes and Empires to fill a small school bus
Fuji apples are my jam
What's with the obsession with red apples, give me a Golden Delicious any day!
If you ever come across a Sumo orange, definitely try it out. Best piece of fruit I've ever had. Pricey though.
