Baby Reindeer Interview: Meet Martha Actor, Jessica Gunning

- We talk about the experience of “breaking out” in Hollywood a lot on Collider Ladies Night. There are many wonderful ways to have that moment in film and television, but Jessica Gunning has seen her star soar in an especially exciting way over the last month courtesy of the popularity of Netflix’s Baby Reindeer.
Based on his own personal experience which he adapted into an award-winning Edinburgh Fringe one-man play, the Richard Gadd-created series stars Gunning as Martha, Donny Dunn’s (Gadd) stalker. What Donny thinks is just a simple act of kindness, offering Martha a free cup of tea on a tough day, winds up being a life-changing exchange as she wedges her way into just about every part of his life. Not only does the relationship turn Donny’s day-to-day on its head, but the experience also challenges him to address some long-buried trauma.
Baby Reindeer isn’t some massive production with a significant monthslong promotional campaign behind it. It’s something that caught on in a big way, seemingly out of the blue, simply because it’s an exquisitely crafted and incredibly well-acted piece. While Gunning isn’t new to the industry by any means, the success of Baby Reindeer has instantly turned her into a highly recognizable name, one earning a good deal of Emmy buzz at the moment, and it’s inspiring many to check out her other credits, films like 2014’s Pride and the ongoing Prime Video series, The Outlaws.
In celebration of this extremely well-deserved game-changing moment, I welcomed Gunning to Collider Ladies Night to revisit her road to Baby Reindeer, to break down the nuances of Martha, and to discuss what it’s like becoming a bonafide Emmy contender.

That moment just before she attacked Donny’s girlfriend, she was incredible with the anger and rage.
She was amazing from first walking in to the sentencing scene.. she made "Martha" sympathetic which after seeing the real woman, she just did a phenomenal job... Best I've seen in such a long time❤
After seeing the interview of the real "Martha" and then seeing interviews of Jessica being herself. It's a truly brilliant performance.

Yesss! I'm in Los Angeles and Jessica is on a different level. A theatre actress. I am a conservatory trained actress, myself. So many actors who work in film and television and have not done theatre are simply less adept at their craft. Of course natural-born talent is talent. But an actor who has hoaned their craft on the stage is simply at a different level than an actor who can only sustain his motivation and emotional life for a take or two or ten. Very differently skill set from an actor accustomed to performing eight shows a week.
Lets not just give her an Oscar. First she needs to give a hell of a performance in a movie. Which she hasn't done yet. She MIGHT have an Emmy nomination for the series. And should be nominated. But let's not give people things for things they haven't don't yet.
The way she portrayed Martha was mastery over her craft. It was a mixture of sweet and friendly; terrifying and psychotic; yet devastatingly broken and damaged ! I hope she wins all the best actress awards this year ❤ oh … and she’s so pretty too …
You can tell she brought her real life warmth to the role, which is why it was so easy to feel sorry for Martha at certain times
She is so humbled by the possibility of being nominated for an Emmy, but she is better than most of the nominees this year and in general. Undoubtedly, one of the best performances I have ever seen .
Shes better than the nominees but we haven't seen the nominees yet. Don't be absurd. Yes, she will probably get a nomination. And deservedly so. But let's not act like she's already won when we haven't even seen who's nominated.
No wonder why Baby Reindeer about to break records of 'Stranger Things', 'Wednesday' and may break the viewership record of hit Netflix shows according to Mirror recently.. with absolute brilliant Actor & Actress such Jessica Gunning! Phenomenal Extraordinare!
Jessica is so pretty with a warm, ready smile. She radiates happiness! It must have been hard to turn her into Martha. And for her to portray someone so dark. crazed, and sick when her personality is so bright and gregarious is amazing.
Her character was absolutely stunning. She needs more roles. Very powerful performance, it gave me chills.
She's such a great actress that we all got really into the series. We felt all kinds of emotions - we even hated her and felt sorry for her sometimes.

Jessica Gunning is a force of nature.
I am so glad to see to be recognized. I told my friend "she is amazingly well done in that scene," while watching the show, and my friend did not feel anything. He does not know how to tell a spot on good acting, he only just watch a show that kind of guy. And yes, I am truly madly happy to see to be bigger in her acting career. Lots of love to you, Jessica.

Yes exactly that line, When Martha asked him, "Did someone hurt you? Who was it?" he truly felt her concern and appreciated it for a while. He didn't tell the police about Martha because she's the kind of person who enjoys looking after others. But eventually, it became too much for him to handle.
Genuinely phenomenal actress and truly scary in this performance. I loved her in trollied a few years back and seeing how shes grown and progressing is truly beautiful. Wish her the best and she totally deserves an award for her work! One of many to come!

I continue to be immensely impressed by Perri’s ability to delve deeper with each interviewee, I get to know each actress and their craft more deeply than nearly all other media.
I remember seeing her in the BBC show Number 9. She has been in a lot of BBC comedies. Glad she is now getting the fame her talent deserves. It shows Britain has so much more quality actors than the rest of world. Jessica was a jobbing sitcom actress, gets a juicy part and puts on a world class performance. Hannah Waddingham was a theatre actress struggling to get any TV work. Gets a big part and knocks out the park and you have Daniel Kaluuya teen soap actor only getting small parts in British movies and lands a one lead role and becomes a world class Oscar winning actor.
I have loved Jessica for a while, glad everyone is now sharing my love!

Netflix will oftentimes drop something that will blew our minds and we will find ourselves invested , and before we know it, we are all soooo hooked and it’s affecting us deeply! And in the heart of it is the character of Martha who can be seen first as just any other depiction of a stalker but Jessica indeed played it amazingly that we understood and sympathized to her, and kudos to the writing of Richard Gadd for bringing a messy, complicated yet interesting characters all across the board including other characters in this series.
I am cheering for Jessica to be nominated and win come awards season.
Baby Reindeer is such a beautiful powerful and OUTSTANDING tv series with performances that can very well win in BAFTA, SAG, Golden Globes and the EMMYS. Damn, episode 4 left me speechless and come episode 6 , gosh, it wowed me.. that monologue indeed… i was weeping… I hope he will be given a best actor award come awards season for his powerful heartbreaking performance. BRAVO!

I was stalking once a person. It was difficult time in my life, and I met outstanding man as I thought, we were meeting only for one week and sometimes wrote messages. Then I wrote that I would like more, and he blocked me. Then I call him in another country, and he said never call back. I was watching all his posts in Twitter, he wrote a book and moved to my city, and I saw in the book some our talks. I did not bother him anymore after calls, but I was really abscessed in my head into him. Now sometimes I watch photo of some people, and I create stories in my head, so I really need to treat myself. And the movie was very helpful for this
