One of my earliest PC memories was trying to get Doom running on a 386DX computer with a friend. It ran - but not well. Then, a few weeks later, his dad brought home a 486DX2 66 from work. Great times!

I hope you get to meet John Romero in person at one of the talks he frequently gives - I'm happy to say he's a really nice person and clearly appreciates the fans. I love the effort he puts into these recent physical releases and the fact that he makes himself so available to the fans in general. Top bloke.

Doom was the killer app that made me finally switch from Amigas to PCs in early 95. Got a Gateway 2000 Pentium 90 and the rest is history. Still have my original boxes for Doom II and Ultimate Doom.
What a great game. Modding gave it an incredibly long life.

Great collection! My dad loathed Microsoft Windows and MS-DOS back then, and denied us getting a PC until 2004 (when i got a laptop from Tiny Computers for college work). We were stuck with an Amiga 1200 with 4mb Fast RAM expansion until 1999, when we got a blueberry coloured first gen iMac.
Luckily, in 1996 we got a Playstation, so me and my brother were introduced to Doom that way! Despite me and my older brother being too young to play it (I was only 10, my brother was 14), our dad rented us a copy from Blockbuster, and our lives changed forever! Fantastic game, and a fantastic conversion to boot.

Doom is in my top 3 games of all time, and definitely how I spent the mid 90s. I owned the Australian big box release until recently (I found it a new home), had the Master Levels for Doom II big box with it's cool geiger-esque artwork. Did exactly the same as you with Doom II - copied it using MS Backup in DOS off my buddies machine before I got my own - great memories. I got pretty handy with DeHacked and other Doom tools and made a complete working level of my High School; complete with modded textures and my own crappy sampled renditions of teachers speaking. It got lost to a hard drive crash, which still upsets me to this day.

Your collection is hella cool, Rees! Also didnt picture you as a metal fan, but now knowing your liking of all things DOOM, it fits 🤘🏻

I still have my original Doom floppy disks and fondly remember playing it with the Gravis Ultrasound pumping out the soundtrack. 😎

If you put the logo upside down, it looks like it says WOOD

That's a Doom 2016 poster though... Not the original game's artwork.

I played the shareware version on a friends Pc and didn't get it at the time. Later my favourite game of all time was Halflife and when I played it through I realized that everything up to that game had Doom to thank for. Doom was a milestone as Quake was when that came out and ghen, Halflife.

That's a great collection Rees. And nice to know there are two of us who actually liked the original Doom 3 and its torch mechanic. There are only two of us I'm pretty sure 😂

It might just be me, but I find DOOM 64 to have somewhat of a DUKE NUKEM and DARK FORCES feel to it

Love Doom too! I can still load up the original Doom 2 version and just play a couple of maps and have a blast! Pretty amazing, given that it's a 30 year old game! And playing with the Brutal Doom mod makes it more fun than many contemporary FPS games! 😁And I am with you on Doom Eternal, definitely preferred the 2016 version.

I have that original doom box with the same floppy disk labels, but I bought it from the Virgin Megastore at the corner of oxford street and Tottenham Court Road

Would have been nice to see the Atari Jaguar CD-version of Doom 2. I think it was under development, back in the day.

I think if they had put the ambient sound from the PS version into the Jag one, that would have made this port way better, even without the music. But I still enjoy "silent" Doom on the Jag. So which two games are you missing in your collection?

  • @tk80

I actually played the 3DO-version through with the hidden "full" screen option. The kickass soundtrack helped, and the graphics are good, but poor framerate ruins most of the game. 🤔

I was happy this worked on my mac. But my first game with a friend and I realized that if he had a faster internet, he could use that speed against me. It was a weird glitch and killed the mojo. I have never been into FPS tho BF1942 was not bad.

I might be getting massively confused, but isn't that poster from Romero modern, surely it's the alternative artwork for Doom 2016, but with the original Doom logo on it instead?

I prefer Doom I over II as well, something about the first game just grabs me a bit more.

I watched my cousins play Doom on their PC. They always had the latest games, while all I got was shareware. That's okay, though; I liked the shareware games.

Is funny i’ve always played doom with the quake soundtrack playing instead. I found the original soundtrack far too cheesy! I like it now - but back in the day it surprised me how this dark horror game had this awful ‘rock’ 12 bar blues thing… not even “proper” metal! Love the game though - thanks for sharing your collection!
