The SunFounder PiDog is a robot kit built around a Raspberry Pi. This old dog has plenty of new tricks up its sleeve, including a face tracking camera, accelerometer, touch sensor, ultrasonic range finders, directional sound tracking and a lot more! So let's build one and it through its paces.

I'm not really into robotics but I really like how interactive this kit is just running off a Pi, never thought it could keep up with this much stuff at the same time. Seeing stuff like the Boston Dynamics robots online (obviously that's way more sophisticated and realistic) always made it seem like a pipe dream for normal people to experience, so this is a nice thing to see for people interested in DIY-ing their own.

The problem with not charging is a common problem when hardware makers only test with USB-A to USB-C cables and forget to put a resistor on the plug side to tell the USB PD charger that it wants 5V.

In adjusted money though this thing is pocket change compared to the '90s Aibo. I imagine if the battery were charged before use it might smooth out the load to the lower power charger so it doesn't crash. It was a little too real for our cat though, when it started barking he woke up from a dead sleep and ran outside.

The Pi Zero has a much smaller camera connector for which that other ribbon cable is needed. And reading through their product brief they explicitly support the Pi Zeros as well, so that's why it's included.

This is pretty neat kit! Looks a bit like the Aibo but designed by Soviet rocket engineers.

      Yes! Soviet rocket aesthetic! 😁

Reminds me of the robotic hunter dogs from that Black Mirror episode, which I guess was based on the Boston Dynamics creation.

This is SUPER cool! I want to build one of these and try to make it smart. I like that it uses pretty standard parts that I can understand and replace/upgrade (I build RC airplanes).

Just got mine in. I’m going to match it up with a pi5 though….at least try.
Got no pi4 lying around lol. The GPIO pin is the same the only thing that might be different is the python used to control the GPIO. That has been changed between 5 and 4. We’ll see. Looking forward to get it build and use it as a study model.

I like how the motion is stuttery, it almost looks like you're fooling us with a stop-motion animation. :D

Oh come on. That is fantastic. I want one and the price isn't bad at all. ;)

No, on reflection I think you're right. Compared to some of the bigger LEGO sets I've bought it's actually not bad at all. 😁

Would of loved one as an 8 year old, the only robot I ever got to play was a "logo programming turtle". All it could do was draw lines but good intro into programming languages.

While obviously £200 or so all in is not throw away money for most, the fact that something with this much ability can be sold profitably for that is remarkable to those of us from say, the Aibo era. It's expensive but it's certainly not bad value.

I almost grabbed one of those a few weeks back.. Was skeptical of the price for what it is (esp not including a pi with it)

Someone needs to make an AI engine for this. Pair it with a small LLM and make the Pidog autonomous.

Do you need the app to let it run/ initialize/ calibrate or can you run code dircetly with it? I'm not a fan of downloading or using chinese software on my pc if its connected to the internet.

Have you done anything with a Sinclair QL? I have two and both sadly have issues. One has intermittent video output via the modulator and a non working keyboard. The other also a non working keyboard, wobbly power socket. I cannot work out how to get the motherboard out. I removed the two screws I could see but its still stuck fast. The little wires that go to the leds are really annoying. I dont know what sinclair was thinking. Re this video its good. :).
