Best app for navigating the backcountry. trail navigation. how to find your way backpacking. What's the best app for backpacking? I went to mount hood and worked with OnX Backcountry, a navigation app, to find the best location to take the thumbnail for this video and epic views I could for this video. We saw search and rescue as the looked for several lost hikers that were children and traversed several peaks. We ate an amazing burger in Government Camp Oregon that gave us the fuel to carry on! Thanks to OnX Backcountry for sponsoring this video.
🚨10 people will be randomly picked to receive a PREMIUM OnX Backcountry membership for FREE! Here’s how to enter:
1. Be a subscriber to this channel
2. Comment on this video ‘I want that app’

💥Winners will be picked by 7/15/2021💥
I want that app. I would use it on a Philmont Trek coming up in July (right after the contest ends) with my Scouts.
I want that app
I want that app (and a properly magnetized leaf lolol)
I want the app and a guide to go with it 🤣🤣
I want that app. Crazy, we just did Ramona Falls just a couple weeks ago. Small world. That river crossing was fun, we just butt scooted across the fallen tree.
I love how Dan is willing to poke fun at himself. Mispronouncing Oregon was classic.
Nope, that’s the way to say it. Unless you can prove that Thomas Jefferson said Oregun
@@kennethstarr5545 When in Rome..... I assume you say New Or-leens, Miz-er-ee, and Ne-vaw-dah.
@@mjlcc55 yep, you assume
@@kennethstarr5545 You are welcome to say it however you like but most Oregonian's are going to correct you and then mad trash talk you later on (whether you live in PNW or not). Also, languages change and adapt over time as well as pronunciation. This is how it is said now, so that IS how it is said regardless of OG pronunciation from Thomas Jefferson.
Ha ha ha! Dan saying Oregon made me laugh! I'm doing the Timberline trail this Fall. Can't wait!
It was nice running into you guys while I was on a SAR mission. The 7 people we rescued were ok, they just had to spend an unexpected cold night in the woods. Too bad you didn't make it to the Bald Mountain overlook, it definitely would have made a good thumbnail for your video!
Hey Dan, it’s not “gone”, it’s “gun” “ore-gun”
Then spell it correctly !
Thank you! I like Dan, but he was making me a little crazy with the pronunciation.
Omg thank you, the em faz is on that siiilllable ore gone whhaaat
That’s a Wisconsin thing...
Who cares
Or-again ... NOT OR-A-GONE
Welcome to the PNW, where blowdowns and wet trails is pretty fricken common 😂 The more you hike here, the better you'll get at climbing over trees.
I was wondering that. I am from BC, Canada and this is like our normal here. Considering it's so close, it couldn't be that different from here. oO
wet butt is also pretty standard. lol
I love how you can make fun of yourself in the intro of these vids. Love when someone can joke like that. You're genuine, and funny!
Your content always gets me so excited for my next backpacking trip! keep up the awesome content Dan
So glad you enjoyed our State. On a fully bluebird day you can see 5 mountain peaks from that point. Hood, jefferson, Adam's, st Helen's and rainier.
One of my favorite views in the whole state
I thought the thumbnail should've been Dan's happy face when seeing the mountains. Lived in Oregon my whole life and I love our mountains, trees, rivers and lakes. The animals and birds are awesome. Please people no more forest fires. Please
Wow what a beautiful trip Dan. You are so fortunate to be able to take these trips and I love that you share them w us. Thank you. 🥾🥾😋
Dan, I broke my ankle last month on trail and your countdown to accident seriously drove up my anxiety!
Take your pants to a seamstress or tailor and have them do surgery. You will get many more miles out of those trousers!
I love OnX Hunt. I was stoked on OnX Backcountry until I realized they didn’t include the trail distances they have in OnX Hunt (I.e. showing the distance between two trail markers). If they can bring those over, I’ll be all in.
What are the differences? Can you use OnX Hunt for backpacking though?
@@chrisz.9974 Yes. I’ve used OnX Hunt for backpacking many times…but there are now some features in Backcountry that Hunt doesn’t have (the layers in Backcountry seem to lend themselves to hiking, discovering trails rather than hunting…it just seems more purpose built). But not including distances from one trail junction to another seems like a big miss (especially if they already have it in their other product). I’m assuming they’ll add it at some point in their product roadmap, so I’m not too worried. For now I’ll just use a combo of both.
@@troswim bro try all trails, its got everything from both apps and its free. I've used it for a few years and I highly recommend!
Watched this video when it was 1st released little over a year ago, and put it on the "to do" list. Last weekend my wife and I day hiked the mirror lake/T,D&H trail and we were also blown away by the crystal clear 360 view of not only Hood, but also Adams, Rainier, St Helens and Jefferson. That rock slide area was way more sketchy than it looked , but worth the scramble. Also had OnX in my pocket as well and wont go without it. Thank you for the inspiration for what was an incredible day.
Dan, another amazing video. Welcome to Oregon. I was cringing for a moment when you were saying the state name...but will not hold it against you. Hope you had an incredible time. I love when people can see the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Cheers! "I want this app"
I hear you I live in Missouri and hate when it's called missoura
I love how excited you get when you see all the mountains! I used to live in Chicago and every time I came West I got the same way.
Now that I live in CO I get to enjoy the views every weekend. I'm always still in awe...I just think my reactions are more subdued now. You gotta get out of the Midwest! Lol
I'm planning to move to Colorado for this reason exactly. I love Michigan and it is beautiful. Just no mountains. Green tunnel hikes get to be repetitive.
As an Oregonian the way you say “ORE-GONE” is so cute.
One of your best intro segments LOL!
Shout out to the search and rescue brothers.
Small hack i just thought of for your befree strap clip. If you drill a hole in the bottom of the handle and attach a stretchy rope loop, you could attach it to your strap like those sunglasses option that some backpacks come with. Thought of it when your bottle dropped. Might not be needed but could be a decent “hack”
👍🙌
Great video. Your videos are a great escape. Keep them coming.
don't comment much but always love your humor, this may be the best
Next video should be a backpacking race- Dan and his magnetic leaf vs OnX Guy and OnX app
Epic views come to those circumnavigating Mt. Hood on Timberline Trail. 40 miles of awe inspiring views every day. Well worth a trip back out here to do just that.
I’ve used OnX all over Oregon, and it hasn’t let me down once.
Timberline trail is by far my favorite place to backpack. I've done the loop multiple times. If you haven't done the whole trail, you're seriously missing out. I'm going to be doing it again in a few months, it's become an annual tradition for me.
Same here! My first Timberline hike is this September! Can't wait.
@@Renegade-py6pc I'm jealous that you get to experience it for the first time. Although, no matter how many times I go out there, it's just as magical. Enjoy it!
Apps are cool, but i dont want to literally bet my life that my phone will NEVER break in the middle of nowhere, so i only bring my phone for photography and potentially emergency calls, and carry a GPS (waterproof and shockproof) for finding my position, and have a compass hanging around my neck for quick and easy access when i want to check directions. The compass only weighs 35g/1,23oz, and can be a SWEET redundancy for the day your GPS/phone slips unnoticed out of your pocket, or you forget it after a break in the middle of a forest...
Pretty cool. I’ll put the app to use when I visit Big Bend in a few weeks - looking forward to app in action😊
I want that app! 👍
I've looked at it many times but never pulled the trigger! I think I like it!

Dan, these two hikes to Ramona falls and Mirror Lake/ Tom Dick and Harry are a couple of my family's favorites. We hike them every year. Glad you enjoyed your trip to Oregon and hope you come back to explore some more amazing views. Also thanks to you, I am a subscriber of OnX!
LOL, it's Oar-a-Gun... And that is my favorite waterfall in Oregon. The Sandy river is no joke. I would never roll across with a noose, I mean, shoes around my neck. Just saying. I've seen ankle deep water take people down hundreds of feet. Also, later in the afternoon it can be like chocolate milk with boulders rolling through it and several feet higher making it un-crossable until the next morning. Be safe, those signs are no joke.
Oh wow, I do want that app. Love you guys, what a hoot.
Killer deal on the one year subscription right now. Dec 2023.
I bought that app. $10 is a great deal & I hope this takes off!
Looks awesome
Glad you got to experience some of what the Pacific Northwest has to offer. Your hike was pretty typical for what I've found in my adventures in Oregon. Lots of blowdown on the trails, and fairytale scenery around every corner.
Planning a 4-day thru hike of this trail for the first week of September and just got done planning my route in OnX! Going to run it and Gaia every other day and see which one I like better.
I’ll use your link and add !!!! Looks awesome, great video
Already noticed this app does not have a local trip I am going on early March- A different app I was told about does....
Kudos! You say Oregon correctly.
If there is anyone out there that can prove to me that Thomas Jefferson said Oregun I’ll go with that.
I want that app!!
Awesome video, they just keep getting better and better! Thanks for sharing.
Moss grows on north side of trees.
The Portland PDX carpet though :D
I want that app. Should be helpful with all the hiking around San Diego County!
Enjoyed the tongue-in-cheek opening. Sorry, but the actual app information was pretty light.
Awesome backpack trip. Epic views!!!!
I want that app! Glad I found your channel.
“I want that app”. Looks amazing.
How many jackets did you bring on this trip, and how did you get them all in your pack? ;-)
I want that app. Fantastic view at the end!
I want that app! Looks good. Love the videos!
I want that app. Views made me add Oregon to the list!
I want that app. I live in the Mt. Hood area and love all the hiking and great photo ops there. Got a great "thumbnail" of my grandson and I at mirror lake.
I have the onx hunt chip for my Garmin.....i use it in the boundary waters and for private property lines for hunting. Pretty handy tool but as a back up to a compass and map.
“I want that app.” Wow, the views are amazing! And not getting lost is just as amazing!
That waterfall looks almost exactly like Crabtree Falls in NC, off the BRP...
My Coalatree pants would NOT have done that...
Haha Ramona Falls trail! Just hiked that a couple weeks ago! Looks like you were there around the same time when the people got lost between Top Spur and Ramona.
Awesome shot of Mt Hood from Tom Dick & Harry
Welcome to Mt hood. Glad you found Ramona falls.. You're in my backyard! Watching from Gresham, Oregon.
If you're still out here, jump over to the skyway bar and grill along hwy 26 in Zizgag.
Also I want that app
I would love the Onx app
'i want that app' excellent video. What a beautiful hike. And that waterfall!!
Oh yeah brother, I want that app! Thanks for the chance Dan!
I want that app - it sounds really nice to have, especially at trails that don't have a good online presence!
Tip 1. Please do not eat pasta (they were lasagne, I guess) with the knife. Tip 2. Please do not eat pasta with coke.
Outstanding video Dan looks like a great app. Those blowdowns were crazy. God Bless
Wasn’t expecting this type of video but it absolutely cracked me up!
I want that app! Great video, thanks for sharing :)
Get water shoes Dan! They make great camp shoes as well.
I want that app - headed to Colorado this summer for some mountain time and would like to give this a try. Another great video / adventure!
Remember to acclimate
@@nk6197 I go to Yellowstone each year from mo and never need to acclimate I smoke also
Will you post a video explaining how you fly with your backpacking gear?
Loved this video!!!
I want that app. Very funny. Great video!
'This item is not available in your Country'.
Well, that's your next target, make it available in the UK for the UK.
I encountered similar blowdown on a hike I did in June up in Idaho. It's rough for sure. I've been all those places in Oregon. Hope you had a good time.
Pretty cool Dan
I DEFINITELY want that app! Incredible!
Found your channel this week. Subbed!! Great job!
'I want that app' I'be been looking for a better app to find my way around. Thanks for the video! Love your sense of humor.
I want that app! Great video Dan!
I already got it before the free offer, looks like I’m going to enjoy 🎒🎒
That app seems pretty cool and last labor day we had an intense storm that caused all those blow downs and made our forest fires explode.
I didn't watch the full video but it looked like Mt Hood? In December of 2020, I was on Mt Hood, McNeil Campground, Ramona Falls and 100s upon 100s of trees were downed!
I want that app. Great video beautiful shots
Very entertaining video thank you!
Good ole Ramona Falls! I've done that trail too many times to count it feels like
I want that app!
Just got back into hiking to improve my physical fitness and get back out into nature. I’ve lost 25lbs already! Would love the app to get to some better viewpoints. Great video!
I want that app. Looks super helpful
Okay, so I don’t have a Garmon mini yet. I have been using some other lame apps which aren’t too accurate. Downloaded and excited to try it out.
At least it wasn't your leg. Take Care and Stay Safe.
I want this app!! Perfect for elk hunting in colorado too!!
I want that app. You should spend more time in the west. The sierras are calling.
The north aide area from Ramona falls to Spur trailheads I just conquered that falling trees on fathersday hahahaha
OnX is what I use.
I want that app.
New to backpacking and hiking. Your videos and a few other really got me more interested on getting out there and going on little adventures. Love the videos.
I want that app. Hopefully it has most of trails in Midwest.
How would you say it stacks compared to basemap?
I want that app! Great Video Dan
Wow, breathtaking! “I want that app”
I want that app (and even if I don't win, I'm returning to backpacking after a 30+ year hiatus, and your channel has been very helpful, thanks!)
I want that app! Sure would come in handy as I begin the 50 state highpoints! Great vid, Dan!
I want that app! Great video guys!
