I'd never considered this before, until you guys talked about the format for streaming has turned into ending episodes with a tease or a cliffhanger - it's like they've gone back to the old serial formula, but now you have to sit through hours of episodes instead of 12 chapters.

Interesting, isn't it - how the old ways become new again, even if it doesn't quite look that way at first. "How do we get them to watch the next show?" "Give them a cliffhanger!"

    I'm 78 and retired. Here's my perspective:
I love (and have time for) streaming and movies, owning over 8,000 movies on DVD/Blu-ray/3D/4K and well over 100 TV shows (going back to Captain Video and live dramas in the 1950s. I cut the cable cord in 2021 and rely on streaming services like Netflix, HBOMax, Disney+, Hulu, Paramount+, and Apple TV. I binge when I can and watch weekly if I have to. I like long story arcs and self-contained episodes. Comfort food, indeed.
Unless I missed it in one of your previous podcasts, there are some great foreign-language shows and movies on DVD that also stream. I'm currently hooked on K-dramas on Netflix and own some foreign-language series on DVD, like Extraordinary Attorney Woo.
I highly recommend streaming or physical media (both in 4K if available), including some great foreign language series.

You mentioned that some shows won't get to DVD because all we have now are tapes. The reason we have "I Love Lucy" episodes today is that Desilu Studios filmed each episode. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case with "I Remember Mama" with Peggy Wood, one of my favorite TV series from the 1950s. I have four episodes on DVD but the rest of the series is lost because they tossed the episodes or taped over them to reuse the tape. In the 1950s, there was no inkling of a possibility for VHS or DVDs.

Sad to me that so much history was lost in the early days of TV, where many (live) programs weren't kinescope'd or simply taped over, as you mention. The throw-away nature of TV ("what value do these programs have after we air them?") was unfortunately short-sighted. And that story about all those DuMont shows dumped in the harbor? Sad (I know the story may not be true, but plenty of shows - history! - unfortunately saw that fate, especially the early decades of soap operas).
I'm pleasantly surprised when I see something pop up on RUclips or on an archive site that I assumed was long gone. Thanks for the heads-up on those I Love Mama episodes. I'm gonna track them down and give them a watch!

This discussion covered a lot. One of my biggest problems with most current streaming series is how slowly they are paced. I'm currently watching (and re-watching) ELEMENTARY, and most of these episodes have a major story and a minor story that are begun and resolved in approximately 45 minutes. I also enjoy the extras, which are not that extensive, but extras have currently become rare on the mainstream studio releases of contemporary TV. (i.e., not Kino Lorber or Shout).

I loved that you brought up the CBS procedural dramas for some reason in this day and age they are treated as shows that only older people watch I watch those shows like csi and ncis more than anything else I don't think you need a continuous story arc all through the season to be considered a great show and let's not forget those shows have to put out 22 to 24 episodes a season versus 8 to 12 episodes on a Netflix show so in my mind you get more bang for your buck on a show from cbs than a show on Netflix

Great point on the episode count. It's amazing how enjoyable and fun those shows are considering how many they have to produce each season (and for MANY seasons!). Going back to the early days of TV, it was amazing how some shows produced 30 or more episodes in a season with a single writer (or just a couple of them). It's no wonder there was a tradition of "formulas" when it came to TV production.
Also, isn't it funny (or ironic) how binge-able those CBS procedurals are? I think I watched the first couple seasons of CSI's DVD releases over a couple days back when they came out!

If I recall, there was a Saturday Morning (back in the days of Saturday Morning Cartoons, and get off my lawn) series that alternated between The Incredible Hulk and Spider-Man and his Amazing Friend (Iceman and Firestar). The Hulk cartoon was clearly aiming for fans of the Kenneth Johnson live-action series because the cartoon Hulk was also pre-verbal. (This may be an imprecise memory.)
I do believe that you can go back, but I notice that it helps to have been there in the first place. I didn't see THE GOONIES in its original theatrical run; likewise, I never watched KNIGHTRIDER in the original. When my wife finally sat me down to watch THE GOONIES and an episode of KNIGHTRIDER; I was annoyed with the kids and at Michael Knight because I found myself wondering under who's authority he was arresting people. You clearly had to be there. OTOH, my wife and I have binged the two Bionic serieses and I loved it all because, in the original, these were Must television. (I also have GREATEST AMERICAN HERO on a DVD set; a while back, I purchased, on eBay, the limited boxed set with the cape and the tchotchkes.)
re: Podcast content vs RUclips content - Personally, I think using the Podcast Only format for something like the comics sounds like a great idea. There may be some who won't cross over and indulge in both, but then you might get one audience for one format and a different audience for the other. (I am not in marketing, so please don't take this to be advice or an informed opinion.) I would say, especially with the Podcast Only idea, give it a try for several episodes, and plug it a lot on the RUclips channel. It might take a mo for it to build up a specific audience, but, while the door may not necessarily open, the door will definitely not open if you don't knock.

Your Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends sounds right to me. I haven't watched it since back in the day, but that's how I remember it, too. I need to give it watch wherever I can find it (I think it's on RUclips).
As for KNIGHT RIDER, man - when it was on in my childhood, I remember adults in my life who just could NOT abide. lol They hated it (the most memorable example was my dad's girlfriend's sister, who was babysitting my sister and I; when it came on, she immediately turned the channel)! My grandpa loved all the cool cop/detective shows that I also loved (like HUNTER, EQUALIZER, MIAMI VICE), but lemme tell you - whenever that KNIGHT RIDER theme (or the promo leading into that night's episode), he gave out a huge sigh and rolled his eyes.
Why? Because it's silly, escapist, fantasy entertainment. It's not gritty or "real." But of course, that's why 7-year-old Me loved it. And like you said, it's also why a lot of us love going back to it - because we were there from the beginning.

Regarding audio-only posts -- keep in mind that there are other podcasts that post their content to RUclips and the "video" portion is just a frozen frame while the audio plays. So even if you do audio-only content and still want to post them to RUclips (but don't want to record video) you could just throw up an image for the duration of that video. It at least then makes those segments available to your RUclips subscriber base (which likely exceeds the podcast subscriber count at this point).

I think that TV shows made prior to 1990 seem to have more literate scripts and more character development. I'm ok with audio-only episodes, but I'm not ok with them not being posted to youtube.
but, posting to youtube with a static image or a repeating slideshow or something screensaver-like would be perfectly fine with me because I usually listen to it audio-only anyway unless maybe it sounds like I'm missing some important visuals like in the interview with the 3D guys when they'd hold up or gesture to a film reel.
it might be cool designing a screensaver like the bouncing DVD symbol that DVD players had, or maybe take inspiration from music channels on satellite or cable TV where it lists track name and artist and album with a picture, but usually keeps the image static/still while it plays that song.
a static image should be easy to edit in and have it run the length of the audio, to make a basic video to satisfy youtube because for some reason youtube is a video platform and you apparently can't just upload audio with no video.
I think even audio-only songs on youtube have a picture with the front album art or something
but yeah, I think the audio with a static/still picture to make it video would work.
I think comedian Bill Burr does this with many of his podcast episodes on youtube, at least the ones he does by himself.

But I'm not normal. I'm home like 98% of the time. I don't (can't) jog or whatever and in my car I listen to CDs. What I find a real problem is when you buy a boxset then another and maybe another... and you start watching them at the same time. It's very difficult to track where you left off .. I may need to watch half the the last episode again to "catch up" .. this gets exponentially worse when you buy more. Some series allow you to resume where you left off some do not ! maybe that's just my players I don't know. So, I've been sometimes taking the current disc i'm on out of the case and flip it over so I don't scratch it and what I end up is a maze of flipped discs around the house .. sometimes I leave a note in the case ... anybody else do this???

I've gotten in the habit over the years of watching a "disc of episodes," whether that's 3 or 4 episodes on a disc or 8. As Heath mentioned, I'm watching many series simultaneously, some of which I don't continue for many months later. So, after I watch, say, disc 1 of a set, I turn disc 2 upside down on the spindle. The next time I go back to that set, I know that disc 2 is where I left off. I've never had any issues with scratched discs or anything doing it this way, either.
That said, your post-it note method works just as well, and I use it too, especially on sets that have non-traditional packaging (like stacked discs on spindles, or a collection of envelopes, or wallets, like a lot of old Mill Creek and VEI releases).
