It's 2am here in Australia and I have no fckin idea how I got to this video. But this is hands down the best video on the Maserati Gransport i've ever seen. Have a like and a subscribe mate
Tim, Thanks for the video. This is the one that made up my mind. My 2006 GranSport LE was delivered 2 weeks ago and I love it. 37000 miles, Fresh major service and new clutch made it even sweeter. I shared this video on Facebook so my friends could understand why I went with this car. Thanks again...
Great to hear!! Drive in sport every time you drive it and the love will only grow over time. Your message made my day. This is really why I started this channel. There is quite a big "unknown" when buying a car that is more of a rarity. loads of solid information exists for more common performance cars, when it comes to something like this solid unbiased info is GOLD. Ferrarichat was very helpful when buying mine but it required a lot of reading and sifting through. Cheers and thanks for watching, sharing and commenting.
Your video was the most informative of all I watched and I purchased one in 2017 with 13,000 miles and now has 17,000......Boy what a fantastic piece of Art on wheels ! LOVE IT ! Thanks !!!
Dusty Helbling thanks so much for this message! Believe it or not you are the 7th person who has reported watching/ believing/ buying and I am thrilled that so many people have gotten to experience this hidden treasure as a result of my video. It’s EXACTLY why I started dedicating time to this channel. Thanks man. Really made my day. Cheers!
Great vid! My family owns a grandsport and a coupe and we can't stretch how much we love Maseratis enough. We bring them both to carshows and everyone gets a kick out of em'!
Camden, Yeah man. They are amazing cars. I just picked up a Quattroporte Automatica and am pretty excited to share my thoughts on that car as well. Cheers, and thanks for watching. If you haven't already, please subscribe to my channel.
I’ve had my 2006 Gransport for 13 years. What a fantastic car. Tubi exhaust and Larini decats are the way to go. Thank you for doing this car some justice...wonderful video!!!!
Chicago Mafia glad to hear you like yours as much as I like mine! Interestingly my car came from Chicago. Small world. Cheers and thank you so much for watching.
The clutch and heater core would be the 2 biggest expenses with this car…from my own personal experience. With the Clutch, you can by the parts over time and just pay for labor as I’ve done. For the heater core, you would need to take the dash apart to fix, or, you can just disconnect the heater core altogether. If it starts leaking coolant you need to be careful as the cars computer is directly in the area that would be leaked on and will more than likely be shorted out.
I’m 100% with you on the comments you made on the video, I’ve had mine for 3 years and wasn’t the most well treated car but has been ultra reliable, great review and genuine
Toronto Cars and Watches thanks so much for the positive feedback. I am always hopeful people use these as a research tool. When I want to buy a car I love to know as many opinions as I can find. Cheers and thanks for watching!
I have a 2006 with 40kmiles that I got 3 years ago. NO issues, blast to drive and at the price you don’t have to fear of driving it. Blue with tan interior, classic combo too.
I owned a 2004 Cambio Coupe (with the vintage option - ball polished wheels, aluminum sport pedals, chrome vent on lower front fender behind the wheels) and I daily drove the car....flawless and best of all, it had a TUBI EXHAUST !!! ....unfortunately, F 1 trans needed a clutch every 20 K miles ( $ 3 K back then) and worst of all, I got T BONED by a 90 year old guy who couldn't see, much less drive....But I walked away....for that I will always be grateful....Daily now is a Giulia Quadrifoglio.....
Dino Pappous the giulia quad is a righteous replacement. Glad you were ok. Another 12k miles and I will see if a clutch needs doing. It will likely be another few years so... we will see. Thanks so much for watching and for the comment!!
Great car, great review doing justice to an awesome car. This review made up my mind to pull the trigger on buying one and will never regret it. It deserves to be on permanent display when not on the road. An absolute head turner, but stunning drive too. And that sound, wow !111
I am thinking of adding a spider, probably an older one to the fleet to give a bit of perspective on the older cars. I will be doing follow up videos on this car as well. Thanks for watching and enjoy your GS!
Tim, you are right on about the GranSport.. It's an awesome underappreciated tour de force! Mine is a Touring Silver with 11,000 miles and just got it registered her in Honolulu. I also owned 2 '89 430's, a black with creme leather and a aquamarine metal flake with bone interior. Maserati is a historic mark that did incredible things without the budget of big brother, Ferrari. Now they realize there mistake with selling along with Alfas which is/was a mistake. Anyway, I love mine and coudn't agree with you more! Lovely, understated, classy, quick and a thrill to own and drive! WHAT A STEAL!
Hi Tim wonderful video enjoyed every aspect of it. Agree with all your observations, spoken as a true no nonsense enthusiast. I own one as well.....they truly are reliable and don't break the bank for maintenance etc... this car is the secret entry spot to Italian exotic ownership for all enthusiasts and with only approx 350 RHD Gransports ever made no doubt a classic in the making. I only found that out while attending the centenary in 2014 in Italy. Looking at all the new Maserati's it's only going to support this model values as well....
Great comment Alan! I love your statement "secret entry spot to Italian exotic ownership for all enthusiasts". I could NOT agree more. Unlike the newer cars which seem to be more Nissan Maxima or Audi A4 than Ghibli or QP, the GranSport feels and is legitimately exotic. The GS benefited from the evolution of two already great cars (the 3200 and 4200) I am hopeful that enthusiasts will see this video and make it a part of their collection.
great video but please for the love of god when you start talking get the editor to remove the music - its fighting you . Can I ask how much it cost to have the paint refurbished - they did an awesome job
It boggles my mind why on Earth you have less than 6k subscribers. Your content is excellent. I would suggest maybe some biaural POV videos of the cars but other that that it’s great.
Thanks my friend. Their algorithm rewards more frequent posts. There are loads of channel with lots of “content” but solid reviews are few and far between. I am committed to staying at it and certainly there are many things I can improve on. Thanks so much for your comment and encouragement !
Found your channel just because I'm digging thru every single video of GranSport. Great to hear your review of it. I liked it. If you'd work more on camera movements, it will be fantastic result to watch. Judging by the way you talk, narrate, explain, I can tell you're true car enthusiast. Got you subbed.
Thanks so much for watching and for your thoughtful comments. It is definitely something I am working to improve with every episode. We recently added a new camera, Jib, gimbal and are adding a drone. This plus an additional camera op should see the production value rise. This has been a labour of love and very much grassroots. Thanks again and CHEERS!
Tim's Enthusiast Garage Hi Tim, my friend and I are thinking about buying a gransport for around $30,000 with 20,000 miles on it. It has had regular service done with one owner and is very very clean. Approximately how often do big services come after 20,000 miles, at how many miles apart does the F1 transmission need replacement and how much did that run you? Any other major info would be great :) thank you so much!
CCFerrariF1 thanks for watching. At 30k miles there is a service that changes all the fluids and likely brakes. The service will run you 800-1500 depending on who can service the car in your area. The clutch service which is a replacement of the disc, pressure plate, bearing and fluid change on the hydraulic pump, will run you 2500-3500 depending on who can do the work. On Ferrarichat there are gents that have just done the disc itself for less than 1400 but I think this is a "you get what you pay for" service. If you drive it on sport I would think 30-70k miles of clutch life should happen. You do have to remember it is a MANUAL transmission and drive it as such. You can FEEL when the clutch engages and really need to be cognizant of what is going on mechanically . The suspension has been very robust. Other than fluids and a clutch I wouldn't worry about ancillaries. I have had no other issues.
Tim's Enthusiast Garage thank you so much for all of the info, Tim! I really appreciate it. We're looking at one with 20k miles on it though ;) sorry for the mixup. Any tips of that would be awesome as well if there are more. Also, where are you based out of? Thanks for all the help and keep the videos coming!
CCFerrariF1 based in Ohio. 20k miles is right where I got mine. I would check to insure maintenance was done by date rather than mileage. Oil service needs done yearly even if it only covers 50miles IMHO. The heater core, make sure it has been done or isn't leaking. I have a mate who had a lock servo on the door give up the ghost but for the most part that stuff is inexpensive through an Indy. The sticky will need sorted , I notice that climate controlled storage is a big deal. Additionally, mine had been driven in the rain so the undercarriage isn't as spotless as you would expect on an exotic...so if that is something you care about , check it out. Radiators can corrode from collecting road debris as the whole front is very open. Check that the dampers aren't damaged as those can be pricy. Control modules don't really fail nor do sensors so if a warning light is on ... Take heed. Mine has secondary cat deletes and I have never had any kind of warning.
Car Pal I also have a quattroporte, I ended up getting an automatica because the duo select IS dreadful. The problem is the shift programming and shift quality is MUCH slower. The GS is the fastest of the 4200 era car and has revisions that no other maser from that era has. Get a GS , put it in sport and ENJOY!
Fantastic video, I am looking at getting a Gransport, and this has given a good overview of the car, and what to look for - they're fairly scarce here in Australia, but certainly not impossible to find, Though it is a lot easier to find the earlier non-gransport coupes. We did get the 3200 here as well though, and there's a lot more of them around - they're still a fantastic car, they share very similar styling (esp. the interior) with the Gransport, plus they have the fantastic-looking Boomerang tail-lights. Decisions, Decisions.... :)
raycollard1984 I envy your ability to choose the 3200, wish we would have gotten those. They definitely worked all the kinks out with the gransport. You will LOVE it. Cheers, thanks for watching
Good video. I have owned a 2006 GranSport for 4 years and driven 20,000 miles. It really is a great car and a great value! I agree with all of points addressed in the video.
Hi Tim, greetings from sunny Sacramento! Really enjoyed the video and hope you will do a follow up, e.g. one year ownership update. I owned a 2006 GS LE for a little over a year, sold it in 2015 because it was literally too pretty to drive (special order pearl white with cuoio/nero full leather interior and barely over 10k miles), got a 2013 Jag XKR (which is an awesome beast and has a true Jekyll/Hyde personality), but lately have been looking at GS again, something with higher miles that can be driven hard without remorse. One pointer -- you named your video a buyer's guide, but you don't dedicate that much time to actually telling prospective buyers what to look for when shopping for a GS. Otherwise, a beautifully shot and produced video, and you obviously are passionate about the GS (and cars in general). Wishing you best of luck and looking forward to updates on your GS ownership! ✌🏼😎 P.S. The color is perfect -- Maserati got it right with both the Alfieri & Nuvolari; they are without any doubt among the best greys on the market, at any price.
Thanks so much for watching and for the feedback! Nuvolari is absolutely stunning and my car still makes me smile when the sun plays off it's multi timbral hue. I bought my car as a driver as cars as pristine as yours sound tend to just sit in my garage and not get used. That car must have been gorgeous. I have a pal with a 2011 XKR and it is great but no GS imho . I love jags but they fill a less Italian part of my heart. I'm working on getting the videos perfect. Thanks for watching
I'm thinking about buying a grandsport, but I am worried about the clutch wear with the transmission, but I had an idea, that if I just put it into automatic mode without the paddles, the clutch won't wear as much or at all
Driving one of these in AUTO will literally kill the clutch. It is programmed to skip the clutch in order for it to feel smooth. It must be thought of and utilized as a manual . If you do so the clutch will last as long as any manual trans clutch on a similar high performance car . 40k miles or more
Excellent video! Years later, how do you feel about these? I’ve stumbled upon a few, extremely nice examples for $30,000. Really considering one for a daily beater.
Sarah Dell I absolutely still recommend the car. Have put a few thousand miles on it over what I had done at the time of the video. No issues to report. I still recommend always driving it in manual like a manual and in sport. Clutch is still perfect and really the biggest issue is the horrible stock tuning in auto mode. Avoid using it and you should be problem free
My personal choice would be to find a late-year manual transmission 4200 Coupe and bolt Gransport bits to it. Then you have most of a Gransport with a proper manual.
ChaosphereIX I have considered buying a late spider manual and doing this. The f1 suits the car. Sometimes you want to row your own cogs. I get it. Plus ... simplicity is best. Cheers and thanks for watching !!!
@@TimsEnthusiastGarage Thanks for your reply. I enjoyed your interview with Matt Farah. Great to find another enthusiast making videos with a similar taste in vehicles. I myself imported from Japan an Alfa Romeo 155 V6 because it was my childhood dream car. The Gransport was another more recent dream car, but the F1 gearbox I could not get past. Perhaps the one I drove needed a clutch.
ChaosphereIX if they need a clutch they aren’t very fun that is for sure. It is CRAZY that you just imported a 155. I have been looking for one for 6 months now. Why japan? Just curious. I was literally just talking with a friend about this car.
@@TimsEnthusiastGarage Were you talking to Jason Cammisa or Tim McNair by chance? Jason drove my 155 at Radwood Philly after Tim introduced us. I imported from Japan because they have some of the best quality European imports other than Switzerland or Germany. Also, by chance, my 155 was a very limited LHD JDM edition - I did not know it at the time. I always wanted the 155 with the Busso V6 and this car came up and it was flawless and very special, so I jumped on it. You are more then welcome to drive it anytime if you are near Ontario, Canada. The 155s are just starting to get legal in the US now, but you want a post-'95 Widebody V6 like mine if you cannot get an early Silverstone or Q4.
What a pleasant review not always just hammered and trashed . Yours is beautiful and lovey color outside and inside . How is it to drive in the automatic ??? Thank you !!
sputnik thanks so much for watching and for your kind comment. I always drive the car in manual mode. Automatic slips the clutch quite a bit as part of it’s programming.
stevking555 a lot of my pieces I did myself. There is a tint product I got from 44tools called ATR. Be careful to only get it on the item that is sticky. It gets all the goo off and leaves the item smooth. Some items I sent to a company called sticky rx. They are great but expensive. The grand sport has relatively few sticky parts compared to my Quattroporte so be thankful of that lol. Those crazy Italians coated half the interior lol. Thanks for watching. Please subscribe !! Cheers!
@@TimsEnthusiastGarage I don't know how many were produced in that color but that has to be the most gorgeous color offered on the Gran Sport. I see why that color influenced your purchase.
Kenneth there are a couple other colours that are also glorious. Bordeaux for example and azur blue pearl. Yes, I feel very thankful to have found this car. It drives amazing and the colour really highlights the curves beautifully. Thanks so much for watching
Kenneth they did colours and options by request. There seem to be about 320 cars in this colour but at this time accounting of production numbers isn’t that accurate
DanTheBavarian locally around $2500. If driven manually with mechanical sympathy many people are reporting 40 -60k miles. When I got my car the clutch had been done at 20k (likely driven in auto) and read 95% remaining. After 6k miles it still reads 95%. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching !!
Tim's Enthusiast Garage thanks for getting back to me! Is that price($2500) for the unit installed or is that just the price of parts? And you also mentioned the heater core, what is the replacement cost and longevity of that as well? Thanks!
DanTheBavarian that price is installed. The clutch is a pretty straight forward job . The part is about half the total cost. As far as the heater core look for $330 on the part, again straight forward install but does require part of the dash to come out. 12 hours or so labor.
You should do a Rob Ferretti style cost of ownership video. I had no Idea you could find these cars with 25k miles for $25,000. What DO they cost to own? (does the adage; Cost of car twice, once for purchase, once for maintenance ring true?)
So, in terms of cost of ownership in the first year and a half of ownership I have : changed the oil (which was actually less than 200 usd), I removed the sticky vent (mostly my time) and the servo on the driver side door lock has failed (not fixed yet but looks like about 300 bucks including labour). There are no leaks or gremlins suggesting I should run for the hills and the car still drives new, A/C and heat work perfectly, windows, seat heaters etc. I do keep the car on a trickle charger as if I didn't I am sure you could add a battery to that cost assessment. Seems reasonable right? With update videos I plan on giving more detail like this. I am about to release one on my 996 with details like the above.
+Charles T you know I grew up modifying Audi's. At one point I had rebuilt my audi 200 and spent so much money I realized exotics couldn't be much worse. I have owned Porsches, ferraris, Lotus and maseratis for the last 15 years or so and they are WAY cheaper to own than trying to mod cars to do something they were never designed to do. I still am passionate about marking slow cars faster ... but thoroughbreds have won my heart.
Hi Tim, How would you recommend a buyer go about checking the bushings and such? Is it something that anyone could detect visually / by feeling around, or would a professional mechanic need to take a look at it?
ThatRandom Dude I would def recommend a PPI prior to buying one. You should be able to get a good idea from both a drive and looking underneath. The rubber bushings and ball joints should have no cracking and should not have any obvious play when pulled side to side and fore and aft.
@@TimsEnthusiastGarage Thanks for your response! I guess, if taking it in to have the clutch wear checked, one might as well have the suspension checked as well. One thing I forgot to ask: how much more direct should this car's steering feel over that of the 5th-gen Quattroporte? Maybe then it would be easier to understand how a good one should feel, over an abused one; I have had ample experience driving the Quattroporte.
ThatRandom Dude it is a quicker rack, it’s extremely “pointy” and should give you a ton of feedback through the wheel. You can feel the weight build and there should be no judder or clanking over angles entrances or a rutted surface. If it has needs it should be priced accordingly
@@TimsEnthusiastGarage I see, so more or less a sharper response than the QP has (at the risk of comfort, perhaps?). I do know the QP already sorta throws you around and sorta dances when on rough pavement.
Great channel Tim. Subscribed ! I love Maserati's in general and still debating on which one to get for a first Italian exotic, either the QP with the Duoselect gearbox or a GS with a true manual setup (very rare, but I have a lot of patience). Either way, great value for the money and a lot less show factor than owning another high end Italian exotic. Maserati is the thinking man's Italian exotic !
Great comment and thanks for the SUB! I hope to find a 4200 spyder with manual to add to the collection at some point. I'd actually do a QP too. They are great cars. I have done a couple trips in this one and it has been great. I have a few new videos slotted for release this month and always trying to improve. Thanks again. Cheers!
That was Easton around the 10 minute mark and towards the end, yea? I ask as I have been looking into these cars for (aWHILE) when I move back to the states and your friend's autospa really piqued my interest, like the quality of attention and such... being that I'll probably be moving to Columbus. So if your friend's shop is there, that'd be super swell.
I think you will really like the GranSport. It is a ton of car for the money. I would love to personally show you around the AutoSpa when you get back so feel free to post here when you have time. AND yes, that was Easton. Good eye. Cheers!
Thanks for the head's up. I was kind of iffy on whether or not that was Easton, as I know there's a shopping center that looks a lot like it in Toledo, as well as another one in Vegas... although I get that it was clearly not Vegas. So I reasoned that there may be more in other cities. Although, in the night shots, I saw the Bon Vie with the AMC entrance rising up behind it and was elated. Especially when the houses with the wood fences and white peaks while you were driving, looked oddly familiar. Like the road behind Best Buy. Performance is EXACTLY what I was looking for. I came across them in my search a few months ago, as I wanted a place that hand washed cars but ideally something more. However, it's one thing to list their services with "after" photos, but to see their actual process, it was like watching a ballet of awesomeness, so THANK YOU, for making that decision easy for me. Upon watching the video for the first time, I thought you'd said "My friends at A performance autospa." The second time through, I caught it. For sure though, I'd love to get in touch upon getting back to the US... problem is though, that the date is so up in the air, that it's not even funny. I'm glad to hear (Well, read) the good things about the car. I've noticed that it's a rather polarizing one. I've been in contact with many individuals that didn't buy it because XYZ reasons... but of the many I've spoken with who did own one, they all say the same thing, that it's their favorite car, ever. I've been a huge fan of the model-ish, since seeing the 3200 in Underworld, being that Maserati wasn't really a thing in the US at the time and the internet wasn't... well, nowhere near what it is today, I was oft left wondering "What is that beautiful car???" The boomerang taillights were a nice touch. As the years progressed, I just hadn't let it go, but about a year ago, I finally decided, "I want one" that as soon as I'm able, I'm going to pull the trigger. The car is sexy as all hell, inside and out, the purr is intoxicating and that engine... that engine. I had a 3.0 Jaguar X-Type that could honestly MOVE, but looking at the specs, the Gransport weighs about as much, but has almost twice the horsepower. So that really got my attention. With a 52/48 ratio, no less. Not to mention all the modes and just... well, you own one, I'm sure you're aware of all the great facets of it. I'm admittedly torn between the coupe and the spyder though. I guess I can drive the coupe year 'round, so there's that. Although... hmm, perhaps I should try and get one of each. This is something I've been wrestling with for a while, so it was funny that you mentioned something about it as well.
Hey Tim, great review mate. More questions 😬 questions, does the ZF gear shift feel slower or less sporty compared to the F1 box in your grand sports. What’s the best exhaust setup for the grand sports? Can we get the GS to sound like the Quattroporte . Thx again.
dspada67 the auto box was only offered in the QP. It suits the larger sedan perfectly. The wet sump 4.2 from the QP also was never offered in the GS. The GS sounds much more visceral. The QP has a much longer run of piping and will this sound slightly different. The QP signature note comes from unequal length and diameter pipe. The best after market systems also do this as well. Most of my mates like the QP note better but the GS having stock back boxes and simple secondary car deletes is still much louder and more offensive which I find quite charming.
Tim's Enthusiast Garage thanks very much mate. I was not even considering a QP. It’s just that my mechanic has a ZF QP fully sorted Inc all the issues you mentioned. He has a GS on the hoist with a water, oil cooler toasted on it which made me freak, about 8k to fix but he did say he’s only done 2 of them to this point. I also hear that the ZF is twice as slow to shift compared to the GS F1. 200 of a ms compared to 100. Kind of a deal breaker for me. I will take your advice mate and go the GS , a few good options here in Aus. Maybe we can also fit the top pro mufflers to the GS 😂. Cheers
Peter Mazzei no engine mods. There are really no gains to be had on the intake tract. I did secondary cat deletes which made it a lot more snappy. Suspension on all of these cars are height adjustable coilovers and I have put it to European spec ride ht. Thanks for watching!
Wow just stumbled about this car recently and finding out it is attainable for around 25k blows my mind. Was wondering about the gearbox because I love manual cars. Currently own a modified Subaru STI but more of a show car now and trying to up my game from boy racer stlye. Opinions on the pricing over time. Prob will look for one in the next 1-2 years. Not in a rush but wondering if market will still have this price point. Looked at Quattroporte but I am more a sport car guy and they seem a lot tamer and personally not a fan of wood in cars. Also wonder about modification on these not a fan of wheel well gap.
Dublr81 you will be happy to know I gave up the boy racer game and couldn’t be happier. I also own a quattroporte and this car is much better built. These really are hidden gems. You will ALSO be happy to know that these all came on coil overs . My car is still us ride ht but will be lowering it soon. Gearbox wise , again , I have nothing but good things to say. If you drive in SPORT only it slams every gear.
07:51. Mate, he's using the clay bar in a circular motion. NEVER ever do this as it damages the paint! It should always be side to side or up and down motion. Never circular 😑
@@TimsEnthusiastGarage looks more like laziness which is just so frustrating given how gorgeous the car is! This is why I tend to just leave half a day aside to do it myself once every six months! It does take a while to do properly but at least you know it's been done properly.
Hi Tim. Could you show some more videos of your grandsport? Next year im in the choice of a 996 4s or grandsport as a weekend sports car b road driving and trackdays. Which would you choose since you also have a 996?
Marcus Larsson if tight or auto cross track days on the menu I would choose the 996. If it was longer style tracks and more road driving, the Maser. That being said your B roads are hilariously narrow. Fiesta ST or old 205gti would be my choice for that. :) I love the GS, more than the 911 but, 911s just come into their own at track days and tighter smaller sections of road. Hope this helps!!
Excellent review , everything a buyer or enthusiast would want to know about it , I personally prefer the Gransport over the GranTurismo. , because it still has a bit of the older fashion body style and also it better than the before and nice than the after models , I’m stuck between the Gransport ar the Mercedes 2005 cl600
Goran Dzebic thanks for watching and for your comment. The GranSport is a true sports car in ways the GT just isn’t. The newer car is bigger and more comfortable, both things that i think make this car great for avoiding. It is still a fantastic grand tourer. The CL is a fantastic car and the depreciation is absolutely mental. The ABC system is costly and complex but provides a truly unique driving experience. I am Going to be featuring a CL very soon so stay tuned.
The Cl will be the faster car in a straight line for sure but it's also a big car that lacks handling. The Gransport is more of a sports car and has way better handling. Way more fun to drive then the cl.
I'm a 15 year old with a learners when I get my license I was thinking about purchasing this car do you think it would be a good first car or should I wait until I'm a little older
Hey man. First off thanks for watching. Here is what I think. First car ... you are going to make mistakes in your first car. You are going to bump it into things. You are going to hit it with a skate board. Your girl will scratch it. Your mom will drop something on it. It will take abuse. If you can have a weekend car then I would say get a learner and have this one for the weekend. If that can't happen. Get something you don't mind banging around a bit. That said you will always have a special place in your heart for your first car so make sure it is a good one :)
Tim's Enthusiast Garage thanks for replying I would get this after I learned how to drive. Right now I'm using an old SUV so if I scratch it it doesn't matter. I'm going to wait for a few years to buy this car now. Once again thanks.
Cut de Pie Fails all GS were automated manual. They did make manual 4200s, yes, I would own one, they are great cars as well though I do think the automated manual is the best choice for the car but in terms of interaction, yes a manual trans does bring something to the table. I drove a convertible manual a while back and it was good but wasn’t the best manual shift to be sure.
The gransport was never offered in manual, only the 4200 coupe. The GranSport is very much a product of “everything working in harmony” I have owned 4200 (currently) upgraded to GranSport spec and a late 4200 manual. Both are significantly paled in comparison to the GS with it’s perfect tim/ECU harmony. If anything since this video I have become more in love with the GS. It is an unbelievable car for the money. My recommendation would be to find the lowest mile best kept one you can and count yourself extremely lucky. They are brilliant
I’ll be sharing a video of my 2006 4200 upgraded to GS spec for further discussion on this subject. The manual ruins this car. It is fun in the shorter wheel base less dynamically resolved spider version if you have to row your own cogs. I have several dozen cars and many are manual so I get that itch scratched else where
Several people have asked what "lights" are on the dash. The ref lights would be the SPORT and MSP button which allow the traction control to be disabled. Thanks so much for all the likes and shares :-)
@TimsEnthusiastGarage any particular reason? I love both cars and am interested in purchasing 1 of them, so I'm trying to get some input . Also, would you be doing a video on the vantage in the future .?
@@vezirhoda I have a mate who has a facelift vantage . I have considered it. The GranSport is just all around more charismatic. In my experience probably more reliable. You should drive both as they are both sort of love or hate cars.
Hey Tim, I’ve seen your video countless times and I’ve been in love with the Gran Sport since it was new. I’m looking at an immaculately clean 2002 coupe GT with a salvage title that has 42k on the odometer, any tips/suggestions on what I should look at or consider Before making my final decision. I’m in between that or a 2005 Gran Sport with a clean title that has 73k and is lack luster in comparison with the 2002 salvage GT for around $2000 less than the 2005 Gran Sport.
TheAmazingMrMcFlyy for the most part since these cars are so expensive to fix body wise I would say if it didn’t get majorly tweaked and was salvaged due to component cost, that may be your better bet. Low mileage and service history would be my pick
That is a gross exaggeration so , no , you shouldn’t worry. Mine was done at 24k and it has 34k on it now and it says it has 75% life remaining . I also just bought another coupe! Yes, I am a fan
Cody Tucker the automatic more is horrible. I have used it on the highway. Around town it will destroy the clutch in auto. So... yes. Every time I drive the car I drive it in manual.
@@TimsEnthusiastGarage ok and the other thing is I heard these earlier 2000s Maseratis eat through clutches how true is that and if true is it better to drive it in manual mode?
@@TimsEnthusiastGarage ok I'm thinking of buying a gransport (I love my Ferraris, Maseratis, Alfas, lancias(I love the heritage and passion) so I think this would make a good first Italian sports car right? I also heard that throwing it in neutral and coasting to a traffic light could reduce clutch wear. Do you think there's any truth in that? Also so when you use the paddle shifters in my current car you don't have to lift off the gas to shift are you supposed to let off the gas in the gransport or keep the gas pressed while shifting? Thank you for the reply much appreciated - Cody
Cody Tucker I drive it EXACTLY like a manual. Yes, neutral when not under load particularly when reversing. Reverse is the worst programming. Drive it like a manual and it is perfect
@@TimsEnthusiastGarage Thanks just purchased a GriGio 06 gransport from your neck of the woods. was considering using performance auto spa for paint correction, ceramic and front end and wheel well PPF
Blacksmith Parts and Accessories if you don’t want to clean the car ceramic coating is the best. Literally spray it off and air dry it . CilaJet allow you to use other products on top. I can set you up with one of the detailers, they can talk you through all the different options
Tim - can you speak a bit more to the transmission? I am interested in picking one up but haven't driven yet and wonder how the dated transmission works especially as it seems a bit more sports car than GT based on its size, the diff, etc. Assume its not a DCT...
Single clutch manual gear box with hydraulic pump actuation. There are boxes that boost processing power and force it to shift even quicker. Driven in sport I have had no complaints. Driven in auto ... it's horrifying. This is where all the clutch wear nightmare stories come from. It literally will slip the clutch and last no time. Ferrari chat has GREAT info on these cars. Numerous people have gone 40-60k miles no clutch replacement and honestly I think it could be 100k unit though most cars don't get driven that much.
I can also report ZERO leaks, and no issues or warning lights 2 years in. Back to the transmission, I think it suits the car really well. I honestly love the paddles, when you are really hitting it on track or back road it just allows so much more focus on driving. It is easy to park and again, in sport it engages just like you would want if you were working the clutch pedal. The gearing , particularly in sixth is a bit short . Sixth isn't a cruising gear and I think that's because this may be a GT but the emphasis is on the sport . Hence the name GranSport . It really is apt.
Whats a bad mileage to buy the car at? There are plenty for sale near me for 25K area with 40-50K miles on it... is that an okay mileage to buy this car at?
Cullen Great question. I have personally driven a car with 87k miles that had been well cared for and honestly if the price is right I would do it. They take miles well. The clutch, if driven in SPORT mode pretty much any time the car is shifting can see the clutch doing 60k miles or more. I think it all comes down to price. There isn't a huge split between the price of low and high mileage cars. I would encourage you to buy one that has the most detailed service history you can find and preferably one with no accident history. Cheers, thanks for watching.
No problem! So you recommend driving it in mainly really in manu/sport mode? Its a similar situation with the Ferrari 360 i want, but i figured id hop into one of these first!
Zuhzuhzombie yes I still have it. No issues at all and clutch like is still meeting in the 80% range. I have driven one with over 120k miles and it still felt good. Mine now has 30k miles.
So roughly 80% left, driving it 10k miles across a year and a half? Not bad. The F1 clutch fear has kept me away from this and the pre 458 Ferraris. GranSport is paddles only. Why do people call them "flappy"? Is the paddle feel similar to my Mercedes C300 or the paddles in my Panamera?
Zuhzuhzombie just to be clear when I bought the car the clutch had been done at 20k miles. The clutch wear indicated 88% remaining. In 4 years or so of ownership and 10k miles or so that percentage has changed very little. I think 50-60k miles on a clutch is easy on one of these cars. Flappy paddle is a reference to Jeremy Clarkson and top Gears review of the car
I am currently a college student and have been looking into something with a little bit more flavor. Would you recommend this car? I have heard that they are very unreliable and prone to breaking down while others have said this is the best car that they have ever owned. I love the older models of the coupe's exterior and interior compared to the newer ones that try to be modern but lack the equipment. What would you recommend?
These cars are pretty reliable if you buy one they has been well maintained for the first part of its life. That being said, as a college student I would be concerned about the potential for repair on any car like this.
@@augustusgedney3745 in my experience these are far more reliable than the Quattroporte. The electrical system and wet sump system are two things that come to mind that are a down grade from the GS.
Thanks for the comment. I have worked hard to create an artistic motif for each episode. It has been a learning process as to what works best for the channel. For season two music will play a much smaller role. Cheers!
Jean Mora the GranSport was only offered with the F1 gear box. You could order one with manual but it was not a GranSport . Cheers and thanks for watching !
Jean Mora GT car is a segment. IE: Aston Martin DB7,9,11 , AMG GT, maser GS, GT, 4200, Porsche 928, are GT cars NOT sports cars or super cars. It’s a class or segment of cars.
hahaha. I had to rewatch the video. I honestly didn't know what you were talking about. Yeah, I like a good scarf. I guess that critique was well earned. Thanks for watching
I almost bought one of these, they're at a great price point on par with a good quality low mile 996 however the clutch replacement costs put me off especially as they're required every 10-15k miles or so. I bought the 996 in the end.
These are a great buy and as you may have seen from one of the other videos I also have a 996. BOTH of these cars are unbelievable performance cars with real heritage that should NOT be this affordable. This car just had a clutch when I bought it so that was a plus. I have a local maser service specialist that actually does clutch replacement at about the same cost for the 996 so that was less of an issue. I will say driving it in "sport" all the time makes the shift much more crisp and several people on forums are over 60k on a clutch. Maybe one of these is still in your future! Cheers and enjoy your Porsche!
Yaroslav Bozhdynsky Wrong. This car was designed in 2002-2003 and based heavily on the process of assembly of the 4200 coupe. It’s engine is actually an F136YC again based on the smaller 4.2 and shares more with that than the later car. The 8c also uses the same transmission found in the GranSport NOT the later GT. The single clutch unit was found to be more sporting. Most of the chassis mounting points also use the earlier GS sub structures. thanks for watching the GT , GS AND 8C are all very special cars. Thanks for watching !
F136 YC is 4,691 cc same as GranTurismo and also wet sump. 8C Competizione Concept was designed in 2002 not 8C Competizione. Also the platform is from GranTurismo, not GranSport.
Yaroslav Bozhdynsky you are killing me. The 8c is DRY SUMP. This information I am sharing is readily available in press material sent to me BY Alfa Romeo Directly. You can also reference articles by Road and Track and Car. The 4200 and the DRY SUMP is the source of the 8c dna. The GT is a completely different item and while it and the QP share some things with the GS and 8c , it is very much a different and more sporting platform. Cheers.
Yaroslav Bozhdynsky yes, you had mentioned it was wet , which GT and ZF QP are. Not trying to argue with you just trying to highlight the correct data. Cheers!!
@@CarlsGarage1 in my garage when parked long term I park in Neutral. If parked in public always in 1st. Congrats on the new car. They are brilliant and amazing value!!
And the obnoxious techno really shouldn't be competing with the music of the Maserati. (and I have nothing against obnoxious techno, it's what I primarily listen to...)
Thanks for watching. This video is a few years old now. Originally my thought was to score each video. It took dozens of hours. I stopped because no one wanted to hear music 😹
Ferrari575 , 355.. 328 Ferrari 911 ...masra shamal , I have had them all , the car I will keep forever is my 4200 Maserati 2004... I will never part with this unreal exotic sports car as its perfect and a work of art.
I really like you video! for once somebody who is not bashing an Italian car....so many people talking about these cars! and so many people who DON'T OWN any of them but they are still so eager to judge and complaint and judge again....it's so easy to bad mouth anything that you don't own or actually know or anyone who you don't even know.....based only on once personal perception.....is someone's opinion accurate reflection of the reality? not at all, just personal. I love cars and have had many of them, from budget cheap peppy cars to expensive beautiful not always reliable cars.....BMW, Mercedes, VW, Audi, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, GM, Nissan, etc. My next car will be a Maserati. sorry about my long paragraph, LOL
Giuseppe Padellaro thanks so much for watching and especially for your comment! I find that the people who are the most aggressive in their hate of “unreliable” Italian cars are people who don’t even own them. Each car has it’s good and bad points. With Italian cars there is so much soul. To me that is what makes them so special. They are beautiful and sound like nothing else. I encourage you to get a GranSport. They are among the Best Italians. Cheers !
Great review - I have a 4200.. but GET RID of that awful background music - it interferes with your commentary (that is very good) and masks the cars exhaust note. But a great video - many thanks!
Dr John yes, we have made many changes for this newest series. Minimal and much lower background music. Thanks for watching and for your feedback! These are wonderful coupes! Cheers!
A nice overview of an excellent car Tim! Here's my take on the entire range of the M138 Maserati 4200 in Buyer's Guide format: ruclips.net/video/zBN3dtC0Ujs/видео.html
Andrew Gardener hey man, I appreciate you trying. Being a touring musician my thought was, from the bringing of the series, to actually score each episode. The first 10 or so have a score to them. It proved a bit to intrusive. Even I, during mix, had serious reservations but I really thought of these as art in the beginning. It is fairly time consuming and producing an episode comes at considerable personal cost. The model continues to evolve. I appreciate your input. Cheers and thanks for watching (as much as you could) :)
Great review! Picked up a 2005 GranSport last year and put over 6k miles on it from about March-November as a near-daily driver - now at about 33k miles. Mine also has the Fabspeed pipes as well as the FD DBW and springs. I did all the sticky removal myself which was a fairly simple task during the interior detail. Changed out the headunit to a Pioneer DEH-80PRS and will be replacing the speakers to something a little better(not going overboard). It's a fairly DIY vehicle and I also plan to address the F1 system myself when the time comes. In the fall, I tried it on the autocross course in the rain.... ruclips.net/video/co9dz2uNJyo/видео.html Enjoy! They hold up much better when driven!
It's 2am here in Australia and I have no fckin idea how I got to this video. But this is hands down the best video on the Maserati Gransport i've ever seen. Have a like and a subscribe mate
Man! Thanks so much for the sub and for the complement. That means the world to me. As always thanks for any likes and shares!
What makes the "LE" different from the regular GranSports?
Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Enjoy your Coupe !!
This is by far the best Maserati Gransport video out there
Toronto Cars and Watches thanks so much for the positive feedback.
Love that colour combo. Beautiful car. So glad we found these cars to be such great drivers. Truly lucky enthusiasts. Thanks for watching !
Such an underrated car. Just beautiful. Cool without looking kitschy or childish. Basically a grown up's sports car.
Well said! Thanks for watching and for your comment. Cheers!
Trevor Knight first off , thanks for the kind words. Secondly, I couldn’t have said it better. It does deserve to be on display!
love the video, I drove 800 miles to buy my 06 gransport spyder, and love it
I am thinking of adding a spider, probably an older one to the fleet to give a bit of perspective on the older cars.
Donald Thayer yes!! Thanks so much for watching and for your comment. Subscribe if you would be so kind :) enjoy your GS !
HextyVision the correction like this runs about $1,400 with ceramic coating.
Yeah i agree about the music thing.
Good video and beautiful car. I own a 02 Coupe GT and absolutely love it. Looking forward to possibly more videos discussing things about our cars.
Absolutely! I am planning on getting an older spyder to compare and contrast .
Looking to buy one in 2018 would you recommend anything and how reliable are these cars? thank you.
What a thing of beauty 😍 Sadly, I’ve never driven a Gran Sport - but have driven other 4200 GT models.
The GranSport elevates the model from merely good to great
Great video Tim! You’re passion for cars has never been more apparent.
Thanks so much for watching. I would love it if you check out my Alfa 4C video or any of my other vids. I really appreciate you watching !!
Is the transmission the same of the quattroporte of that era?
ps stunning car
Car Pal I also have a quattroporte, I ended up getting an automatica because the duo select IS dreadful. The problem is the shift programming and shift quality is MUCH slower. The GS is the fastest of the 4200 era car and has revisions that no other maser from that era has. Get a GS , put it in sport and ENJOY!
Nice stuff Tim, am just about to collect on of these and will also be doing a video.. this is great though, very good.
The car truly has been a pleasure. Best of luck with your new acquisition! Thanks for watching. Cheers!
The best video that I saw explaining the car. Thanks
SA7 Corp thanks for watching! Subscribe for more. I will be doing an update video on this car in spring !
Thanks for watching
there is one spyder with rebuilt title and 64k mls on facebook for 15k$ in athol,ma
its a 6 speed stick shift for you that like 3 pedals
Vaso Lazovic thanks for the heads up. That’s a lot of car for the money!
40k miles or more
One of my favorite car videos. period!
Great Job!
Bro. This just made my
Day. !! Thanks for the kind words. Subscribe and tell a friend 🙂
Tim's Enthusiast Garage Just what I wanted to hear! Thanks!
Sarah Dell honest ownership and collector perspective is why I started the channel. It is my sincere pleasure!! Thanks for watching !!
It the paint on your front bumper original?
Yes , bumpers often don’t quite match and it is exacerbated by the angle the bumper plane sits at relative to the bonnet and fenders
@@TimsEnthusiastGarage cool. I have a silver one and similar paint issue. I thought it was a bad respray.
@@euroasianbob9268 probably original. I have a Argento Luna blue 4200 now and it is the same thing.

Great video - just picked up gransport unfortunately it has sticky buttons syndrome!! Any links or tips to fix it??
stevking555 a lot of my pieces I did myself. @@TimsEnthusiastGarage Thanks Tim Appreciate it !!
What color is your car? It looks like a tint of purple? I love it.
Kenneth it is very purple in either florescent or direct light. It is called alfieri Grigio. Named after one of the two brothers
@@TimsEnthusiastGarage Do you know if there were a fixed number of colors offered? Or could you custom order any color you wanted?
Kenneth they did colours and options by request. There seem to be about 320 cars in this colour but at this time accounting of production numbers isn’t that accurate
how much does a clutch replacement cost on them on average and what is the average lifespan of the clutch?
That's quite a bit less than my Volvo. haha
New clutch and flywheel installed was $2200.......
Hi Tim,
How would you recommend a buyer go about checking the bushings and such?
ThatRandom Dude weirdly I think the GS Rides better. It is much more composed.
How do you clean the sticky button on a gandsport please
@@billynoto2344 ATR solution works on most of the black parts. Some ultimately need refinished. The GranSport has drastically less than 4200 or QP
It’s just that my mechanic has a ZF QP fully sorted
Inc all the issues you mentioned. Cheers
dspada67 you will not be disappointed with a GranSport. Thanks so much for watching!
What modifications have you done to the engine and to the suspensions?
Peter Mazzei no engine mods. There are really no gains to be had on the intake tract. I did secondary cat deletes which made it a lot more snappy. Suspension on all of these cars are height adjustable coilovers and I have put it to European spec ride ht. Thanks for watching!
Tim's Enthusiast Garage Thank You for your feedback!
If you drive in SPORT only it slams every gear.
finally found good info about this car, thumbs up!

No sure I know what the front plate leak is . Not even sure what plate . let me know and we can discuss

I already whatched your video lot of times !

Question, wouldn't be a manual 4200 with the gransport 'body kit' a great or even better alternative? Better interior specs, manual...
Why didn’t you get the six speed manual?
What would you rather have a 2006 gransport or a 2007 vantage v8
@@vezirhoda gransport

TheAmazingMrMcFlyy awesome man! Thus is great to hear. It’s the reason I do it . Salvage depends on WHY it’s salvage.
TheAmazingMrMcFlyy for the most part since these cars are so expensive to fix body wise I would say if it didn’t get majorly tweaked and was salvaged due to component cost, that may be your better bet. Low mileage and service history would be my pick
Tim, great video. I've read the stories about having to replace clutch every 5-10k miles. True? How has clutch life been for you?
That is a gross exaggeration so , no , you shouldn’t worry. Mine was done at 24k and it has 34k on it now and it says it has 75% life remaining . I also just bought another coupe! Yes, I am a fan
So I'm confused do you have to use the paddles shifters 24/7 or is there a automatic mode?
Cody Tucker the automatic more is horrible. I have used it on the highway. Around town it will destroy the clutch in auto. So... yes. Every time I drive the car I drive it in manual.
@@TimsEnthusiastGarage ok and the other thing is I heard these earlier 2000s Maseratis eat through clutches how true is that and if true is it better to drive it in manual mode?
Cody Tucker driven in manual the clutches last a very, very long time. On the forums most people report 40-60k
@@TimsEnthusiastGarage ok I'm thinking of buying a gransport (I love my Ferraris, Maseratis, Alfas, lancias(I love the heritage and passion) so I think this would make a good first Italian sports car right? Also so when you use the paddle shifters in my current car you don't have to lift off the gas to shift are you supposed to let off the gas in the gransport or keep the gas pressed while shifting? Thank you for the reply much appreciated - Cody
Cody Tucker I drive it EXACTLY like a manual. Yes, neutral when not under load particularly when reversing. Reverse is the worst programming. Drive it like a manual and it is perfect

If it has a new clutch-absolutely. Had two. Coupe then a Spyder.
Still got it? How long did the transmission last you?

Alfa 8C was based on GranTurismo, not GranSport
Yaroslav Bozhdynsky Wrong. This car was designed in 2002-2003 and based heavily on the process of assembly of the 4200 coupe. It’s engine is actually an F136YC again based on the smaller 4.2 and shares more with that than the later car. The 8c also uses the same transmission found in the GranSport NOT the later GT. The single clutch unit was found to be more sporting. Most of the chassis mounting points also use the earlier GS sub structures. thanks for watching the GT , GS AND 8C are all very special cars. @@CarlsGarage1 in my garage when parked long term I park in Neutral. If parked in public always in 1st. Congrats on the new car. They are brilliant and amazing value!!
this car is amazing
Cero Hazuri thanks man! I appreciate you taking time to watch my videos .
Absolutely gorgeous car!
Thank you sir, I love it and it has been very reliable.
Great video, but in the future, please turn down the background music while Tim's talking. It's way too loud, and hard to understand him...
And the obnoxious techno really shouldn't be competing with the music of the Maserati. (and I have nothing against obnoxious techno, it's what I primarily listen to...)
Thanks for watching and for the input. Cheers!
hahaha. Right on .
The video is awesome. However you need to cut out the music if your going to be talking and showing how a Maserati sounds.
Thanks for watching. This video is a few years old now. Originally my thought was to score each video. It took dozens of hours. I stopped because no one wanted to hear music 😹
Ferrari575 , 355.. 328 Ferrari 911 ...masra
shamal , I have had them all , the car I will keep forever is my 4200 Maserati 2004... I will never part with this unreal exotic sports car as its perfect and a work of art.
Marco Dalli what a beautiful testament to the perfection of these cars. Thanks for watching and for your comment!!
USA didn't allow the boomerang lights on 3200
In 2023 they are importable to the states for the first time. Love those taillights
Cheers !
Omg this is the sexiest vid I've seen of a 4200 😂....... My absolute dream car 👌 I'd love one ♥
1 min in,,, I realize you know your your subject.
MultiShawnt thanks for watching man. It means a lot
Sorta like, what kinda car would
Satan drive... I'm sold 🏁
MultiShawnt he’ll
Have his in black 😈. Cheers, and thanks so much for watching!
I don’t have the money 😢
Save a little bit at a time
Great review - I have a 4200.. but GET RID of that awful background music - it interferes with your commentary (that is very good) and masks the cars exhaust note.
The music is too intrussive . Sorry . Did not finish .
In the fall, I tried it on the autocross course in the rain.... ruclips.net/video/co9dz2uNJyo/видео.html
Enjoy! They hold up much better when driven!
Transmission transmission transmission
Makes the car. I put 700 miles on my blue 4200 this past week daily driving it. With the GS tcu tune it is absolutely fitting for the car. Cheers!
Background music is irritating and toooo loud!!!!
Sorry Pappa!
