So I do want to brush up on the features of each card in this video but if you do want it really in-depth look at either of these credit card options then you know the drill, I have done separate reviews on both the Citi custom cash and double cash cards so I’ll be sure to link to those down in the description below. Alright so in order to decide which one might be the better option for you we're going to look at 3 major categories which would be welcome bonuses, cashback in rewards, and of course everyone's favorite category, fees. So first let's start off with the welcome bonuses which a lot of times is the reason why people get a particular credit card in the first place
When it comes to welcome bonuses, the newer custom cash card offers you $200 in cashback when you spend $750 on purchases within the first three months of having this card. Now $200 isn't anything crazy but it's still a pretty great offer for this tier of credit card plus a $750 spending requirement in the first three months is not that high in my opinion considering most of us probably have a few $100 in expenses each month and that means it'll be pretty easy to hit that $750 spending requirement and get your $200 in cashback. Now, the Citi double cash card on the other hand has a pretty crazy signup offer of nothing. This has been one of the biggest complaints with the Citi double cash card since it was originally launched so while it obviously loses in this category, the fact that the Citi double cash card doesn't have one either isn't that big of a deal in my opinion.
At the time of recording this video and for as long as I have known about these Citi double cash card, it is offered a flat 2% cashback across the board on all eligible purchases which comes to you in the form of 1% when you buy and 1% when you pay off the card. Currently the Custom cash card gives you 5% cash back on up to $500 in spending each month and everything above that spending limit as well as all of your spending in every other category is going to earn unlimited 1% cash back which is still fairly decent.
Both of these cards have no annual fee which is a great place to start and not that this should matter at all but they do have the exact same variable interest rate but again please always pay off your cards on time every time and if you ever end up paying interest on this card then you really should just cut it up and throw it away because you're not using it properly.
It's really going to come down to your spending habits and as a general rule of thumb, if you spend well over $2,000 per month on your card then in most cases the Citi double cash card is going to be the best option because it offers 2% across the board with no spending limits. However if you are just getting started with credit cards or you don't spend a lot on your credit cards and maybe you only spend $500 or so each month, then it's very likely that the custom cash card will be the better option because you can get 5% cash back on your top spending category up to $500 in spending.

The correct answer is get both. This is the easiest credit card set up ever. Custom cash for 5% your highest spent and 2% on everything else makes it so easy to remember. No rotating categories or complicated redeeming strategies. If you want more than 2% cash back on those other categories you are probably going to need 2 or 3 more cards. Why not keep it simple with just these two. The points/cash back combine to make it even easier.

Enjoyed the review regarding the Citi Double Cash and Custom Cash. Already using the Double Cash and was recently approved for the Custom Cash. My strategy will be to use the Custom Cash for a single category up to $500 and use the Double Cash for all other purchases.

Great comparison! That sign up bonus throws a curveball though, because it blows the Double Cash card cash back return out of the water in at least the first year.
Personally, I have the Citi Custom Cash card to only use on my fuel purchases. I have other cards for dining and groceries, but, 5% back on gas is big for me.

Just get both and use the custom cash for up to $500 in 1 category per month. Double cash is just a catch-all for misc. spending that doesn't fit a higher percent category on other cards. Not sure how this is difficult to figure out.

I had a Double Cash card and I product changed to a Custom Cash. I already have 2% cash back cards so I got the Custom Cash solely to use on gasoline purchases and get 5% back. I spend about $300-400 in gas monthly

I have a chase freedom flex and it’s too early to apply for another card since I got an Apple Card at the same time so I could do monthly payments for my laptop, I’m also only 2 years in my credit card journey, I’m hopeful I’m able to use citi custom cash for gas and my chase freedom flex for everything else, the dining and drugstore 3% from the flex helps out a lot too

i plan to apply for the custom cash for the SUB, then PC to the double cash for the 2% unlimited. i want to pair the ty pts with my citi premier card.

I have a Chase Freedom Unlimited, AMEX BCP, and I recently got approved for the Custom Cash. For the moment, I'm using the Custom Cash card to pay for all my dining out at 5X points. It will then become my gas card once the 5X points offer expires on the Freedom Unlimited, which is also my catch-all card. However, should I add the Double Cash to become my catch-all card even if it's only 0.5% more than the Freedom Unlimited? I eventually want to have a "Trifecta" so I think I might get the Double Cash and then wait another 6-12 months to get the Citi Premier to finish it off. Just now sure if I should get the Double Cash? Great insights, by the way! Thank you!

I'm only going to use credit card for gas and I'll use my bank card for everything else like I've always done. So thanks much appreciated have a good week!!

Where is your logic exactly ?
Citi Custom Cash gives a max monthly reward of only $25, because the spending limit is $500 a month ($500 x 5% = $25), verything else is then at 1%.
    v.s.
Citi Double Cash is at 2% regardless of spending amount and no caps.
Plus it's not the first $500 in spending, but $500 of the highest category, categories could be neck to neck and ONLY one of them will get 5%. Too many tricky criterias, just to earn those extra 3% percent and with a cap of $500 max spending.
No thank you, sticking with my Citi Double Cash 👌.
