It's a useful card for the Citi "Quadfecta" (Premier, Double Cash, Rewards+, Custom Cash), as it allows you to modify your top-earning category on-the-fly. I'm running a Chase/Amex setup now, but am going to move this to the top of my queue for starting a Citi setup over the next couple of years. This was supposed to be my first full month of my "gardening" 🌱 phase till 2023, and then Chase pulls out the 100k CSP, and now Citi with this. Uggh. Can't catch a break! 😊 I would hope that Chase & Discover are paying attention, especially since the CEO of Citi's card division helped design the Sapphire Reserve. The ability to self-select bonus categories, especially without fuss or hoops to jump through is major plus for card enthusiasts.
That 6% ends up effectively being 4.4% after you factor in the annual fee. If your grocery spend is under $500 each month, the Custom Cash would be a no brainer.
$500/mo is right on par with others' $1500/quarter, but this is more flexible. I see this slotting in wherever I need. I spent just $500/mo on it in whichever category makes sense. Very competitive I think
I been looking for a card for gas. I spent about 200 bucks a month. I don't have one thing that i solely spend up to 500 on. Is this card only for someone who spends that much on a category or would it make sense for me?:
Just did the math on my first statement with this card. I averaged 2.45% cashback across all of my spending. Combine this with one or more other no annual fee cards to cover different categories and you can get upwards of 4% back pretty easy.
I love the flexibility of this card (how you don’t have to activate categories along with the wide variety of category choices) and the high multiplier it has. I use it exclusively for restaurant purchases. Love it!
Whoa I was just going to go for the blue cash preferred for groceries but I think this might be a better deal for Groceries since there's no annual fees.
I like this card. I am a low spender so $500 limit for groceries is no problem even when splurge. But also means quite the wait to redeem since Citi one of those $25 minimum redemption banks. So that part is less cool for low spender. 2 months wait isn’t too bad I suppose because of 5% over 3 or 1-2 back.
Entertainment is a tough category. I'm so happy I have a grandfathered Capital One Savor card, but I still might pick this one up for the bonus sometime in 2022

If done correctly it can be 30k Thank You points each year with no annual fee and only 6k spend. I understand your logic though. Great video. I always enjoy watching you
When it can cost me $100 to fill up, and at least $50 each trip, $500 is easy. That's for the work truck. I also drive a Jeep that is $50 or $60 to fill. $500 is too low of a limit in some months for me.

Nope. I got the card yesterday, and it explicitly states it doesn't count wholesale clubs in its 5% categories. Depending on your spend in wholesale clubs, you may be better off just getting your club's credit card. That's what I do with mine. The way I have it set up, I don't pay for the membership anymore, the cashback takes care of it, and I have left over for whatever I want.
If there was a higher reward limit, I would go with Travel. I'll shoot for a 2nd BoA Cash Rewards card instead. Something to still keep in mind as an option if my setup changes.
I product changed two B of A cards that were essentially useless to me into cash rewards ones: first is always set to online shopping, while the other can vary (right now it's on home improvement for Bed Bath & Beyond visits).
Live entertainment is a great category if interested in citi points. What’s cool is there’s always the citi presales for concerts and events, so it’s a good combo. Can easily spend 500 bucks on a big pair of concert tickets. Then maybe when not using it for concerts one month plug in gas or one of the other harder to cover categories
I’m used to credit and all this so if I’m banking at Wells Fargo am I able to get the city custom cash card? If so is it any difference if I was to bank at citi?
Gas stations. Not even counting actual fuel costs, I spend about $500 per month in convenience stores and truck stops, most of which code as "gas station." I can continue to put my gas on my PenFed Platinum that earns 5x points (4.25%) on gas paid at the pump and put everything else on this card. During the quarters where Chase or Disco have gas stations as a 5% category, I'll use the Custom Cash for something else I need.
I got approved for this card yesterday. Just watched this video again and came down here to comment, not realizing I had left a comment months ago. I see this card as filling holes left by the rotating 5% categories of other cards. As mentioned above, if Disco and Chase don't cover gas stations that quarter, then this is my gas station card. If one of the above have gas stations, this may be my grocery store card. If both gas stations and grocery stores are covered, I might use it for dining, or for a particular purchase I need to make in some category that is not covered, like I need a couple of ceiling fans from Home Depot, I can put that one purchase on this card and not use it for anything else that month. I do plan to get the US Bank Cash+ eventually. It can be stacked with this, also filling holes. Between those and the Disco it and CFF, I can get most of my spend on 5% back cards. If there's a category where I'm going to spend more than $1500 that quarter on the Chase, for example, maybe I spend up to the $1500 cap in the first couple months and use the Custom Cash for the last month of the quarter. It just gives me more flexibility.
Do you think the intro bonus will decrease come October? I was going apply for this and use it as my main grocery card but now the CFF is offering 5% back on groceries next quarter.
Grocery store is the best category to use the card,as almost everyone would max the $500 a month, gas not so much unless you're driving a tanker,i only fill every 2 weeks $50 each time, that's only 100 per month
Not sure if changing products from Simplicity (opened over 4 yrs ago) to Custom would give me the intro bonus? Also, do fitness charges include wellness such as SPAs (ie: Massage Envy)?
I like the inovation/flexibility of this card. For someone with 20+ cards most of those categories are covered or not enough spend to matter. Might buy GCs at a drugstore but I already do that at office stores. I'm not sure what would count as live entertainment but that might be a good category.
Given the cap, I wouldn't really say game changer, as your maximum reward is $25 a month on this, and really is lower because you'd presumably already be earning rewards on the spend, so it's an incremental gain of
Would sports tickets qualify under any category? I do some ticket resale so if season tickets would qualify in the live entertainment category so that could be big.
So I just completed a product change to this card and I believe the agent mentioned you cannot transfer to travel partners. Any truth to this? Not an issue for me, but I’m sure it could be for others.
Wonder if product changing my citi rewards+ to this card is a good idea? I’ll definitely get this one once I finish with chase! Also, can you please update your blog on ranking chase cards?considering new cards that are in the market now. As always thank you for the great videos.
What would be the best card or cards if you were spending 100,000 to 200,000 a year on travel, dining, and discretionary spending. Would the BOA Premium rewards Card be useful if you kept the max in a BOA account to get the extra percentage? Would there be an optimal card set up for this not worrying about the sign-on bonuses?
Sebby has recommended before to get into Chase cards and exhaust 5/24 with them first before getting into any other cards. Personally, Chase hates my Guts for some reason, but give it a try.
It has some rules, but nothing as egregious as Chase or US Bank. One application every 8 days, and no more than 2 every 65. That's about it, really. Happy hunting.
The best thing is, you can’t always switch it up month after month. My favorite part of this card, unlike some cards that have a permanent category or a rotating category every 3 months
This card may make up for the fact Citi killed the entertainment category on the Premier card . That was one of the unique categories. Glad to see it back, and at a better earn rate.
I’m facing the decision of applying for this or the BCP right now. I’m looking for the card mainly to focus on groceries, but Amex is offering me a $375 intro bonus and waiving the annual fee for the first year, so I may just get the BCP and then downgrade to a no annual fee card after that. I just usually don’t like hassles so I’m wondering if it’s really worth the trouble for me or if should just apply for the Citi card. I’ve also never had an Amex card so I’m wondering how much value there is in using the BCP to form a relationship with Amex who I hear has excellent customer service and other less tangible benefits. But this Citi card seems so easy in its setup and use.
You generally don't need to "form a relationship" with Amex. Many people start with a Platinum and that's arguably the best starting point: www.asksebby.com/blog/my-first-amex-which-charge-card-or-credit-card-should-you-get Platinum via CardMatch is 150k now but same principle re. opportunity cost still apply :)
@@AskSebby Thanks. I’m definitely more team cash back than I am team travel though, and there’s no way that I could justify the annual fee on the Platinum as I don’t travel very often (maybe one trip per year) and I don’t see myself getting enough value from the perks. That may change though as circumstances change and I may hold off on getting any Amex card for now so that I can make the Platinum my first one and take advantage of that intro bonus when I’m ready to join. Right now I have the Sapphire Preferred and the Venture One, which is fine for the infrequent, budget traveling that I tend to do, lol.
You don't have the capital one savor that covers entertainment I believe it's at 4% if you have the annual fee version and 3% on the non annual fee version.
Sebby, I was thinking the same thing after you made that comment towards the end that you don't have a card that offers entertainment. Of your 40+ cards, you don't have the Capital One Savor or SavorOne where both cards offers entertainment?
Yeah as a frequent live theater goer, I was always thinking about getting the capital one SavorOne for the entertainment category. And this card is a perfect and superior replacement for that.
Sebby, Totally different question: What boxing match did you go see? Was it the Mayweather fight? As a boxing fan, I was excited to see that picture with the ring in the background.
I just got approved for this card… And it just about completes my no AF Sampler trifecta of the Capital one Savor One, Citi custom cash, and discover it. On months that I don’t max it out on groceries I’ll probably shift over and max it out on home improvement.
Sebby- I'm getting married soon, and about to have a ton of spends towards restaurant/dining, hotels, and various of other categories (florists, photographers, videographers, band, DJ, etc.) Which card would you recommend for someone who's about to have nearly 50k in spends within the next 3 months?
I maybe dumb here but wouldn't it be more competition for the Chase Freedom Flex World Elite MasterCard? As that's the 5% rotating and Freedom Unlimited Visa is 1.5% cash back with 3% for dining & drugstores?
@@NCKyle1980 I don’t think so since with the flex you’re limited to whatever category the card is on but I guess it would depend on your spending habits
@@JonathanSorunke yes sir. My mind went to 5% base rate return on the first $500 spend without considering 3% overall unlimited. It would take $1,000 in spend for FU to break even. $1000 spend on Citi $25 plus $5. Totals $30 v/s $1,000 spend Chase totals $30. At $900 you are Citi $29 and Chase $27. At least base cash no transfer partners or CSP/CSR factored in.
Streaming may have value if you have yearly plans that bunch together in the same billing cycle. A yearly gym membership may also be worthwhile. Of course, only if other categories would be less that month.
This card sucks if you have Amex and or Chase. Gas makes sense but are you really filling up 500 dollars every single month? I cant think of anything I would routinely spend 500 dollars every month that chase or amex doesnt cover.
Na, amex has high AFs. Chase is fine but theres that 5/24 & no permanent gas or grocery category. By itself the citi cc is ok. But the real advantage is if you already have other citi cards.
@@iv6335 Different strokes for different folks. I had the gold card and got rid of it. It forces your to spend money to get value. If you like to spend money on eating out and traveling then it makes sense to keep it. 500 dollars a month is a great amount for groceries for most people unless you have a big family. Either way, there is no card not even the Amex 6% cash that will give more value (subtract the 95 fee as well). It’s capped at 6,000 a year anyway which is what? 500 a month lol.
I just got approved for $7,600 credit limit. $200 welcome bonus! 758 credit score. I got this card to add my son as a authorized user so he can use it for his everyday. 👍🏽
Terms seem pretty clear that customers can only hold one Custom Cash card... so if you already have one you won't be able to PC into another one. This is a pretty fascinating innovative card. Like you, this is probably going to be my concerts and sporting events card now that things are opening back up. Most of the other categories are either already well covered with my other cards, or don't get enough spend to justify breaking out of my "general spend" category. I was really hoping for utilities but I guess I'll have to keep gardening for the USBank Cash+ to get that.

@@mrCORSA Start doing business with them, if you're not already. Make sure you're under 5/24, or whatever their requirements are.
I product changed two B of A cards that were essentially useless to me into cash rewards ones: first is always set to online shopping, while the other can vary (right now it's on home improvement for Bed Bath & Beyond visits).
@@fatagnus3153 promo/bonus codes?
500 for home improvement is terrible. Doesn't move the needle. Far better off with the Lowes Amex card 7% back unlimited at Lowes.
40 cards!? Can you make a video on all the cards you have
Live entertainment is a great category if interested in citi points. What’s cool is there’s always the citi presales for concerts and events, so it’s a good combo. Can easily spend 500 bucks on a big pair of concert tickets. Then maybe when not using it for concerts one month plug in gas or one of the other harder to cover categories
Was shopping around for a good gas card that does not have revolving. Was going to get Amex Cash Preferred. But this will be way better.
I’m used to credit and all this so if I’m banking at Wells Fargo am I able to get the city custom cash card? If so is it any difference if I was to bank at citi?
I want a card that has an increased % on rent or mortgage
I just want to be able to use a card for mortgage. I’ll take the 1x gladly
The Citi trifecta is easily the best. Better than Chase, Amex, and the Capital One trifectas.
What’s the credit score for this card ?
Do you think the intro bonus will decrease come October? I was going apply for this and use it as my main grocery card but now the CFF is offering 5% back on groceries next quarter.
Tough to say, I would still get it and use for something else until the FF's grocery bonus is up.
Any known issues using this with the Curve card?
Thanks for the video. Did you cover the restaurants/dining category? Curious if the card covers delivery apps like DoorDash or UberEats?
No delivery apps. Details in the blog post: www.asksebby.com/credit-cards/citi-custom-custom-cash
@@AskSebby thanks!
@@catarinak2543 Hello Catarina
How are you doing
Did they change the rewards for ducks unlimited? Or am I still grandfathered to the old rewards benefits?
So do you only get 5% on stuff once it reaches 500 or is it whatever is your largest spender for that month?
I like the inovation/flexibility of this card. For someone with 20+ cards most of those categories are covered or not enough spend to matter. Might buy GCs at a drugstore but I already do that at office stores. I'm not sure what would count as live entertainment but that might be a good category.
Can it be used to pay mortgage through plastics and still earn 5% cashback ?
I have the double cash and will consider getting this custom cash after I complete the savior one welcome bonus.
Given the cap, I wouldn't really say game changer, as your maximum reward is $25 a month on this, and really is lower because you'd presumably already be earning rewards on the spend, so it's an incremental gain of
Foreign transaction fees?
How long is a billing cycle?
your videos are really helpful, it seems like every time i have a question your videos come up
Will this work at Sam’s club for groceries or anything in club?
Ok does this card have a cable bill category?? If so I’m definantely getting it
It does not.
US Bank Cash+ does.
Anyone only applies for credit cards for the high credit limits? If so which cards are your highest limits?
I was really looking for a wife/girlfriend metaphor rather than a basketball metaphor.
I spend a lot of money in bowling alleys. It’s one of my hobbies. Would that go under live entertainment?
Would sports tickets qualify under any category? I do some ticket resale so if season tickets would qualify in the live entertainment category so that could be big.
So I just completed a product change to this card and I believe the agent mentioned you cannot transfer to travel partners. Any truth to this? Not an issue for me, but I’m sure it could be for others.
i tried to product change to this card yesterday but got told i needed to wait a month before citi would allow it
Good to know because that’s exactly what I’m going to do
Now you can do it
@@grant6958 thanks for that update. Gonna give it a try
@@grant6958 just tried it. Didn't work. They said to wait until the last week of July
Wonder if product changing my citi rewards+ to this card is a good idea? I’ll definitely get this one once I finish with chase! Also, can you please update your blog on ranking chase cards?considering new cards that are in the market now. As always thank you for the great videos.
I'm gonna grab it and just use it on gas and get the free bonus. I just want to know if I can pull the dollar value out as cash to invest.
@@fatagnus3153 Thanks for info. I don't want it to be a part-time job trying to figure out the best way to use points.
Is this worth getting after doing chase trifecta (with reserved) or should I open more chase cards before getting this citi?
Sebby has recommended before to get into Chase cards and exhaust 5/24 with them first before getting into any other cards.
Personally, Chase hates my Guts for some reason, but give it a try.
Does Citi have strict application rules like US Bank or Chase?
It has some rules, but nothing as egregious as Chase or US Bank.
One application every 8 days, and no more than 2 every 65. That's about it, really. Happy hunting.
Probably grabbing this specifically for home improvement, because none of my other cards have a high return on spend for home improvement.
The best thing is, you can’t always switch it up month after month. My favorite part of this card, unlike some cards that have a permanent category or a rotating category every 3 months
@@hansols1727 you're right, if you don't have the other categories covered.
US Bank Cash+ has a 5% home improvement category.

Does Instacart fall under the "Grocery Stores" category? What about pick up orders from Whole Foods placed on Amazon?
Many people start with a Platinum and that's arguably the best starting point: www.asksebby.com/blog/my-first-amex-which-charge-card-or-credit-card-should-you-get
Platinum via CardMatch is 150k now but same principle re. opportunity cost still apply :)
Didn’t see this card coming, but hey, Citi nailed it! 😃👍💯
Is there a minimum income required to get this card?
I just got approved for this card… And it just about completes my no AF Sampler trifecta of the Capital one Savor One, Citi custom cash, and discover it.
On months that I don’t max it out on groceries I’ll probably shift over and max it out on home improvement.
Sebby- I'm getting married soon, and about to have a ton of spends towards restaurant/dining, hotels, and various of other categories (florists, photographers, videographers, band, DJ, etc.) Which card would you recommend for someone who's about to have nearly 50k in spends within the next 3 months?
Sebby, why don't you have a discord server for this channel yet? This community would thrive even more!
Wait so can I use this for Costco and Sam's? Would that be under groceries?
No, exclusions listed in the blog post: www.asksebby.com/credit-cards/citi-custom-custom-cash
This card is a direct attack to the Chase Freedom unlimited. Great video!
Ya to me it seems like a CFF competitor, though id give the slight edge to chase since the CFF has the permanent 3x categories.
Can I use points to pay down card?
Streaming may have value if you have yearly plans that bunch together in the same billing cycle. A yearly gym membership may also be worthwhile. Of course, only if other categories would be less that month.
This card sucks if you have Amex and or Chase. Gas makes sense but are you really filling up 500 dollars every single month? I cant think of anything I would routinely spend 500 dollars every month that chase or amex doesnt cover.
Once the initial Fervor dies down people will see this.
Groceries. This is the only benefit of this card. There are better gas cards if you can get them..
Visa or MC?
MasterCard
is the restaurant category excludes fast food?
Just what i like, automatically adding the offers!
For home improvement I'd venture to say that a Lowe's or home Depot card giving 5% off at PoS would be more effective.
