Building The Water Drop Door!

- Join us as we glue up a beautiful walnut door, carve an interesting water drop pattern into the door and, create a handle, then hang the door using the Milcasa Magic 2 sliding door mounting system.
We glued up a door-sized panel of 1.5” walnut which we bought from our local supplier, KJP Hardwood. (kjpselecthardwoods.com/)
To make the door more interesting we digitized some actual water drop patterns, then used Vectric Aspire to design a pattern for the door. We overlapped some of the water drop ripples to create an interesting interference pattern. We cut out this pattern using our CNC router and Vectric’s 3D roughing and finishing toolpaths. We created a separate video showing how we did the CAD work for the water drop pattern. Check it out here: • Creating Water Drop Pa...
The interference pattern has turned out to be our favorite part of the whole project - you can’t help but run your fingers over the subtle textures where the water ripples combine.
We also created a knob using the 4th axis on our CNC, and again using Vectric Aspire to design the droplet shape, and create the 4th axis toolpath.
Finally, we install the door on a closet in the master bedroom of a newly renovated home. We got some help with the installation from Colin at The Lake Partnership, who managed the renovation (www.tlpi.ca/).
We are very happy with the door hardware, which worked flawlessly with this 70lb door. The installation was quick and easy though the instructions were a bit murky and required some testing. Luckily, we had built a complete prototype door out of plywood, which we could use to test our design, and the builders were able to use to verify the installation.

Actually not only the design but also very impressed how it was installed that is seamless and fit in
“I made a door!” And a hell of a door it is! That’s a funky design on it, and the hardware is something else. I’m surprised that it can hold the weight of that heavy door in the one corner when it’s closed. Good job!
You guys are the best at what you do!!!
Nice work….the Canadian flag was a nice touch as well….from Caserta Italia 🇮🇹🇨🇦
Lovely work! That hardware really is neat.
looks awesome, great editing for the video as well
I love leaving some sap wood in my walnut pieces. I just have them on the edge. Awesome looking door
Beautiful work
New subscriber here!
This was a recommendation, so I checked it out.
I love the door, and the water drop ripples look stunning. Nice work. Thanks for sharing your talents!
Thanks! How awesome are you! Thanks for subscribing!

Looks Fantastic!
exellent work
Hell yeah
To be a little critical, I don't care for the grain mismatch of the board on the left. I would have turned it around so that the light part is on the edge, and not interfering with the main water drop. It's just too noisy. Sorry.
Hi! Actually I agree with you. We only had that one board at the time, and the other side of it had a similar disfigurement. Couldn’t flip it. Next time we’ll have more slabs to choose from! Thanks for checking us out!
@@loen.designbut… you didn’t use a slab. You even showed the glue up… was just a bad or unlucky decision in the glue up
Just went back to the thumbnail and it’s clearly visible there.
Mate, I’d just own it - it was a bad decision. Nothing wrong with making a few mistakes here or there. We all do it. But own it
@@loen.designwhat do you mean “couldn’t flip it”??? Why not? You messed up. Amateur work. Hope you weren’t paid.
Just paint the board blue
I love the design idea and how it turned out, but I don't think it suits the colour of the room. To me I would want to use something that special as a front door.
another coat of the monocoat, huh?
Yah. I get that. It wasn’t really necessary in this case but it does enrich the colour and increase the protection. Blacktail Studio has a video about how to apply the second coat. Some prep is required and you have to wait a week or more between coats. “Monoish” eh.
Shame about the sap....
The old guy… no PPE…. Irresponsible
