I tried Dr. Barnard's method in December, for 3 weeks, and quit when my glucose reading hit 430 mg/dl after a meal. I have been eating high fat carnivore since mid-Jan and this AM my fasting glucose was 217. I expect to get under the 120 within 2 months. My BP and weight are also down dramatically, and my heartbeat is almost normal. I have energy and no longer have trouble breathing, walking, or thinking. I'm a 1=N that low carb, high fat works. And it is not hard to do. Have a great day.

That is because low carb works. It is just chemistry. Dr Bannard was absolutely correct about what low carb does to A1C and insulin and glucose levels. It works. He then uses the cholesterol strawman argument to say not to do it even though it does work.
Problem is, diabetes is a much larger problem for the heart and circulatory system than cholesterol.
Hypertension is a much larger problem than cholesterol.
Both of these issues are corrected on low carb. Oh well, eventually they'll learn.

Since Aina impressively said what I was going to write to you, I'll say that these Doctors aren't "uneducated." They know ! They're not stupid ! It's actually way more sinister. These people purposefully MISLEAD YOU because they're peddlers for Pharmaceutical Corporations and want their bonuses at the end of the year Suzanne. Quick story that is very true that happened to me just before the pandemic as a recent graduate, a new Chiropractor. And if you care, I'll tell you why I became a Chiro. But, I worked on a 16-year-old girl in Atlanta (now live in New Jersey for Mom & Dad). Her Mother told me she had bad asthma. So I said, "Well, I'll open up her thoracic spine where the nerves that go to the Lungs originate." So I give her an adjustment to her spine. Comes in again a couple days later, same thing. Comes back the following week and the Mother says to me, "Oh my God ! My daughter is using her inhaler almost 90% less and sees a huge difference in her condition. " And the daughter is smiling and confirms. Ok great. What happens next ? I get a phone call and get REAMED OUT, by her nutjob of a Pediatrician. She goes on to scream at me ! End result, the Mother saw that her pediatrician did not have the best interest of her daughter in mind, and changed Doctors immediately. I told the Mother, "I thought at the end of the day, as a Pediatrician, it's about the health of the children" with my hands up. The Mother was so pissed. Why ? Back to Aina's comment below. I took away her bonus from the pharmaceutical company. So they know, trust me. They want you sick. It's been at the forefront now these past 3 years. They don't even hide it anymore.

To the contrary, he is talking about a whole foods diet. Which is about as far from a SAD as keto is. Just in the other direction. Pretty much any diet out there is better than SAD, so you will get improvements. That isn't the question to ask. Instead ask, "which diet will be healthiest 3, 5 and 10 years into it?" We haven't had the answers to that. But those studies have been coming out in the last couple of years. Interesting reads.

Before the agricultural revolution around 10,000 years ago humans had been evolved to be hyper-carnivore. We, as a species had been hunting, killing and successfully thriving by consuming almost all animal products for hundreds of thousands of years. The proof of this is in the fact that there is no such thing as essential carbohydrates. There is only essential fats and essential proteins.

But there is a problem with eating most plants. Most plants contain toxins. Especially the ones we think of as being good for you. For instance, spinach has an extreme amount of oxalates in it. Oxalates cause a lot of problems. Kidney stones, tarter on teeth, even building up as atherosclerotic particles, before the build up of cholesterol gets there. Not the cholesterol causing the problem. Its trying to heal the underlying issue. Damaged caused by oxalates in the diet. Plaques formed in the mouth and in the arteries.

Insulin resistence is a kind of defense mechanism of a cell by shutting out glucose if its energy needs has been met. It is called Randle cycle and a natural, physiological reaction of cells...If there is fat in the cell, it doesn't need glucose as a cell cannot oxidize fat and glucose at the same time. Too much glucose is toxic in the cell which guards itself from it (Randle cycle).

    • @tanyasydney2235
      @tanyasydney2235 Год назад +1

Exactly. But if you eliminate fat, then there's no fat clogging up the insulin receptors and glucose is allowed into the cell. The answer is not to avoid fat or glucose, but to not eat anymore than one needs for sustenance. Overeating of any kind can lead to fatty liver and eventually possibly also to diabetes.

Yes, a low carb diet most definitely causes insulin resistance. At lest, it does for me. After being on a keto diet for about two years, even a tiny bit of carbs would spike my blood sugar very high. After very slowly adding a bit more carbs to my diet and lowering the saturated fat, insulin sensitivity was restored to pre keto days. So I guess we can decide which fuel we prefer to burn...ketones or glucose. Since the body turns protein into glucose to burn as fuel, one has to assume that both glucose and ketones can be used. We have a hybrid system. For me what works is eating primarily carbs with very little fat, or eating primarily protein and fat with very little, if any, carbs. But eating high carbs and high fat most certainly doesn't work. My insulin sensitivity improves if I'm moderate in both fat and glucose. I don't do well with extremes, and both high carb diets as well as keto or carnivore diets feel extreme to me. So far, I've tried just about every dietary protocol on the planet, and what seems to work best is the DASH or the Mediterranean diet. However, I do have some friends who do well with Keto and even Carnivore. I also have life long friends (I'm 74) who've been vegan all their lives and are thriving. To my point...whatever works for you is the right diet.

As a retina specialist, Half of my patients are diabetic. For the type II Diabetics I recommend Dr. Westman's book "The New Atkins". Recent patient remarks returning to office 6 months after that recommendation: " I got the book and after two weeks I had lost 15 pounds and my blood sugar was the best it had ever been. I went to my endocrinologist she said that I had to discontinue that diet and start Insulin or I was going to die. She repeated incessantly that I would die. She eventually increase my insulin to 100 units per day. I gained 60 pounds and my blood sugar is really 400 to 500. I had to stop the insulin two weeks ago because I thought I would die."
Sadly, welcome to the state of American medicine today.
Dr. Westman's breed are far and few between.
Unfortunately, as physicist Max Planck stated "science advances one funeral at a time." Doctors like Barnard speak expressing unproven, platitudes, and no data. Probably 10% of the population can remain metabolically healthy on their recommended diet.

Following Atkins, do you see many patients who struggle when they start upping the carbs per the book (phase 3 and phase 4)? Virta showed strong 1 yr results that tapered at 2 yrs. As I understand their protocol, they follow the New Atkins book. Phinney later said, "getting the carb level right is hard." Is it? Or are there simply individuals for whom phase 1 or maybe phase 2 is the "maintenance" level? As a clinician, you get to see this in real time on a patient-by-patient basis. Mainly, I'm curious about the degree of variability across individuals and whether this is a small percentage phenomenon or a substantial percentage.

Thank you Dr. Westman for all your good science. I see Ancel Keys may have died but his bad science lives on. The fat and cholesterol heart theory was taught (brain washed) to me and other doctors (and especially dietitians). I majored in nutrition as undergrad and drank the Kool aid in medical school. Then I became an obese, diabetic with fatty infiltration of the liver. I felt like an over corn feed beef cow…well marbled and ready for slaughter. The studies that tested low fat diets such as the women’s health initiative failed to show benefit with a low fat diet. The “scientists” then dismissed the multimillion dollar study saying it was flawed because it did not prove their preconceived bias. 10 years ago I went lo carb and have maintained a 50-60 pound weight loss. With this and exercise and proper medical care including appropriate medications my lab and health parameters are perfect. Not being a corn feed and dead beef cow is wonderful.

Dr. Westman, this is the first video of yours that I have watched. I really enjoyed the style and content of the video. I am a 69 year old woman who is a type 2 diabetic. I am 5' 7" and morbidly obese at 256 pounds. I am on two oral medications and two subqu injections. I take Metformin, Glipizide, Levemir and Victoza. I am unable to walk for any distance due to back pain. I worked as a Registered Nurse for 45 years in an acute hospital setting and lifting, pulling, turning and walking patients has taken a toll on my back. About three weeks ago, a video came up on my dash and it was a video about the carnivore diet. I don't know why I watched it but I did and then I watched a few others and very randomly decided to give it a try. I have obviously struggled with my weight and gave up a few years ago. Nothing sounded better to me than a chocolate bar! I wasn't really prepared to start a carnivore diet but made the decision to go forward. Currently I am eating BBBE with a very infrequent bit of heavy whipping cream. I have halved my insulin injections from 60 units BID, stopped my Metformin and have been feeling very good. I have not cheated. I planned to keep it up for about 90 days. Today I watched a video about the 80/50 ratio of fat to protein. It really confused me and although I am a pretty intelligent woman, measuring macros, trying to eat 80% fat which they recommend eating whole cubes of butter a day, just isn't something I see myself doing. I ask myself, did our ancient carnivore ancestors make sure that they were eating 80% fat and 20 % protein? I am pretty sure that I could continue the carnivore diet indefinitely if I choose to do so. Once I make my mind up to something I am the type of person who will die trying. I don't look forward to eating only beef, bacon, butter and eggs with occasional dairy for the rest of my life. My question is do you have a suggestion to help me with the ratio's that they say I need to reverse my diabetes, lose weight, cure my joint pain, etcetera? I am not asking you for free medical advice nor am I thinking that you are my personal physician. Overall what are your thoughts on the carnivore diet? Deborah

I found out recently from Dr Mason that not all cells become insulin resistant at the same time/same way and it seems that the muscle cells are the first to become full and stop taking in more fat for storage while other cells like fat cells are least likely to become insulin resistant but overall you then have less cells taking up sugar/fat for storage so blood sugar and triglycerides stay higher for longer.

Dr. Westman: You stated you agreed with Dr. Barnard's comment about excess fat in the cell impairing the function of insulin. His point seems to be that one should be able to eat and effectively metabolize a higher carbohydrate intake, if they keep their dietary fat low. In response, you stated that it's carbohydrates causing the intracellular fat, rather than dietary fat.
However, doesn't dietary fat get stored more easily as body fat, as opposed to the multiple steps required to turn carbohydrates into body fat? And, because terms like "carbs" and "sugar" are rarely defined, I'm referring to unprocessed, whole-food carbohydrates.
Again, carbohydrate avoidance obviously seems to work, but I can't help but agree with Dr. Barnard's assertion that it's not actually resolving the underlying issue -- the inability to process carbohydrates. I've seen people use the term "metabolic flexibility" and talk about the ability to switch back-and-forth between utilizing carbohydrates as fuel and using fat as fuel.
These are inquiries, not statements of fact, as I'm neither a doctor or researcher. I'm just trying to understand, as I keep reading conflicting information. I've even been reading, watching, and listening to doctors in the ketogenic and carnivore groups talking about gaining weight and now suggesting to not eat as much fat (butter in coffee, butter on steaks, fat bombs, etc.)

Any healthy Type I diabetic will tell you carbs shoot up their BG. Any credible doctor will attack the rows and rows of high sugar foods and drinks found in grocery stores. These foods are directly related to worsening of diabetes and pre diabetes. When all carbs turn into sugar there is still a problem. Just because you can tolerate some carb’s doesn’t mean you won’t be better off restricting carbs further. I think there must be physiological mechanisms involved in insulin resistance, pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes formation that are not yet fully understood because some people get amazing results with the approach Dr. Barnard is talking about and some people get great results with the approach Dr. Westman is talking about. Since both seem to work for people, perhaps it comes down more to individual genetic variations relative to sugar or fat metabolism and since there is evidence for both working, trying both and seeing what works best could be a reasonable way to discern which way to go for each person.

If you are not taking in glucose to burn then eventually all you got is fat to burn and the glucose your own body makes from protein. I was vegetarian and with all these pain in my body and issues. No more. Now am keto carnivore after eliminating in one month, everything that was making me ill.

Who are these doctors who propogated high carb, low fat diet in 2023 yet knowing this type of foods create insulin resistance which is the root cause of Diabates, Heart issues, Stroke, Kideny failure, Liver chirosis, Dementia, even various types of Cancers.

January 4 2023 my A1c was 13.4, triglycerides were 495. Went low carb, started on metformin 500 mg BID, atorvastin 40 mg daily, started taking red yeast as well. May 3 2023, A1c was 5.7, triglycerides 78, cholesterol 101. We decided to half the atorvastin and see how things are in six months, if everything is still good, I can go off it and see if things stay that way. I stayed on the metformin as it doesn't bother me to take it. BP yesterday was 101/66, it was previously 135/80ish on lisinopril with HTZ. Weight is down from 231 to 185. Hope to eventually get off BP meds and atorvastin but happy with my results so far. My practitioner was floored when he saw how much I"d improved in three months.

Dr. Westman, I wish that you had addressed his last concern that what’s left in the diet after cutting carbs, which lower your glucose and A1C, causes high cholesterol leading to cardiovascular problems (CAD), i.e., What tends to kill people with diabetes is CAD.
Would you address this cholesterol argument?

Thanks Dr. Westman. You, like other doctors I’ve followed have it totally correct. Doctors who have an agenda or product to sell are already suspect. I was a T2D, but not anymore. Cut out the processed foods, and fructose which we find in a lot of these processed foods, even foods advertised as "Healthy". I’ve been doing a lot of study on your Mitochondria and white vs brown fat. Also, your body needs fat (the good omega 3 kinds) and protein. It doesn’t need carbohydrates to survive. Two facts (in general): 1. Americans are over eaters and 2. Live on processed and fast-foods. Why else would we have a obesity and T2D disease in this country? Also, we eat too often and too much. T2D is a dietary disease and it’s definitely not chronic (can be reversed). I get what little carbs I eat through foods that are fiber rich and also do IF (either OMAD or 16/8). Keep up the good work. Looking forward to more videos.

This doc. has his agenda. Why do so many Keto docs. like Berg and Axe push so many supplements?

    • @poohbear3027

@@lenblack1462 Because they want to make money. Vegan doctos also push supplements. Keto diet does not require any supplements but the vegan diet does require at least Vit B12 if not more.

@@lenblack1462 Not sure. Doesn't matter. They push supplements because they know you need them to survive the vegan diet, are they making money that way? Who knows? Probably.
Vegan docs definetely push whatever book they have recently written. So making money that way.
And who cares if Axe or Berg are trying to make money off Keto supplements. Anyone with half a brain knows you don't need supplements on the keto diet.

Fat in the cells indiciates to me EXCESS calories. No othing wrong with natural fats in meats. Its all the excess fats used in cooking process or added simoly because we say fat is ok. It is VERY easy to exceed your caloric needs with consumed fat. Eat a clean whole food diet. Orepare your foods in as healthy a way as possible.

Great video, Dr. Westman. I am new to the low carb diet and recently watched one of your long form interviews. Totally appreciate your flexible approach. Obviously there is no one diet for everyone and obviously many people benefit from the low carb approach. I tried it before and my cholesterol did rise; this time, I am going high protein instead of high fat. Seems to me a pretty clear remedy. Also good for one who works out a lot. I suspect my 300grams of carbs a day for 30 years is why I have such a high A1C now, only brought down by water only fasting. Hopefully low car works well long term. Bet it does. Liked and subscribed. Also annoyed this other doctor draws such broad conclusions from one observation. Not helpful! Thank you Dr. Westman.

Thank you Dr. Westman for this commentary for sorting out that nonsense. They deliberately misconstrue topics in a negative way so that they're not technically wrong. It's a sad world

I'm on Carnivore all year long, I feel great with ton's of energy and maintain weight loss and all the other benefits. My foundation / starting point is the "Induction" phase of Atkins, which I stay on and never leave prior to Carnivore.
