  • This video is an updated version of the Let's Play series I made for this game back in 2009: • Let's Play realMYST
Turn on captions for meta commentary.
A lot of work went into making this version, particularly when getting the new video recordings to match up seamlessly with the old commentary. The major improvements to this series are the addition of unused commentary that's been sitting on my hard drive all this time, and better audio and video quality. This behind-the-scenes video explains all the improvements in more detail, and thus why I decided to make this version at all: • Why am I redoing my ol...
This was the first game in which I dubbed quasi-scripted commentary all the way through, so my lack of experience shows, especially in the beginning. But you can witness my evolution as I progress through the game and gain experience and confidence. Since your character is dropped on Myst Island at the beginning with no knowledge of what's going on, I'd say it aligns rather well, even if it was accidental.
I'm playing realMYST, which is the original remake of Myst that came out in 2000, not RealMyst Masterpiece that came out in 2014 (that's five years after I originally made this series, pay attention). I actually thought about dubbing my 2009 commentary over the newer game for this video, but that idea lasted about five minutes due to how different the mechanics of that game actually are.
Here are the timestamps that correspond to the original version:

I did everything I could to include a one-minute introduction at the beginning of the video, but due to massive technical issues at the last minute (six-hour videos become unwieldy to edit), I couldn't pull it off.
Here are the points I wanted to make in it:
    1. This video is a tribute to my long time subscribers. So thank you to those who have stuck around so long!
    2. To new viewers, when I pretend to encounter puzzles for the first time, I'm not trying to fool you, I'm setting up a more immersive way to present the solution.
    3. To anyone, watch this other video if you want to know the differences between the versions and why I made this one: ruclips.net/video/r-OeQ5qxbEQ/видео.html
    4. If you turn on the captions, you get director commentary. That way it's optional.
    5. I'm streaming Riven next Saturday! OK, I wasn't going to put that in the video. But follow my Twitch account anyway: www.twitch.tv/shadyparadox/

11:38 The planetarium is based on Roman architecture; circular buildings (tholoi) built by the Greeks had conical roofs, whereas the Romans were the first culture to make extensive use of domes. The library is also based on Roman designs; in Greek temples, the exterior columns were typically free-standing, while the Roman temples, like their Etruscan predecessors, favored pseudoperipteral designs (the portico columns are free-standing, while the columns at the sides and back of the building are embedded into the walls). In addition, the columns of both buildings are of the Tuscan order, as evidenced by the lack of fluting typical of Greek columns.
Not that I expect anyone to care...

This playthrough itself is a ton of fun and your passion for the game is really visible, as well as your fondness for the lore, story, and characters, which is honestly not that common given that many people seem to hate Myst. While it's clear that you're only pretending to encounter puzzles for the first time, I don't think you need to be worried about it. Just like you hoped, it really is a more immersive way to present the solution. Most Myst let's plays are one of two extremes, where the player is smugly obtuse and pads the video with filler (and ad breaks), or just silently speedruns the puzzles as fast as possible skipping steps wherever they can. You come across a lot more like a good teacher, the kind who always gets their class involved in the process of finding the solution and understanding why it works. You really do seem like you get excited about Myst and want us to as well, and your enthusiasm is pretty infectious. I'm looking forward to seeing it again, since I found your channel when your original realMyst walkthrough was in the Mechanical Age, and I followed every single video I could from then on. I'm really happy that this series got some love, especially in the format I always wanted: one long video in higher quality. Hopefully this helps reduce how criminally underrated your channel is.

It's hard to believe that I've been watching your channel for over 10 years. I subscribed June 26, 2009. (I looked it up you are also listed as my first youtube subscription.) I started watching with your Kings's Quest series. Thanks for all the hard work, looking forward to more content in the future.

3:11:00 Well, one the bright side, since the key is limited in where you can take it, it is not a real "inventory item", and it does not replace the page. Imagine going back to Myst Island and realizing you have no page, not having a clue you "lost it" when picking the key :D

Incredible job. Was the Channelwood map step #4 (???) in the last video?

    • @shadyparadox
      @shadyparadox  4 года назад +3

Thanks! It was actually two things.
Yes, the Channelwood map was one of them. But even though I knew it would be a lot of work, I saw no reason to be uncertain as to whether I'd be able to do it. It was a grind to get all the positioning of the arrow right, but I pretty much knew all the steps going in.
The second part was the live recording of the Myst book on the coffee table. Although it was less work overall, it was still more of a concern to me because I don't have much experience with capturing that kind of footage, so I wasn't sure whether I could pull it off. I couldn't even find a good setting at my place, but fortunately the coffee table at my parents' house offered a decent backdrop. I had to wait for them to go on vacation to film it (yes, they knew I was doing it). Fortunately, my friend had a stage light he let me borrow, and I used a separate microphone to get the book shuffling audio since camcorder microphones are low quality and terribly noisy. Even after going through all that, I wasn't sure if I was able to get the video to play in the book panel. As I expected, playing the video using the book's screen video player doesn't show up well on the camcorder, but I was able to superimpose the image in with a 3D video edit. I was lucky I set the book down pretty much exactly level with the edge of the screen, which made it easier to edit.
OK, that was a bit of a ramble. I guess I'm eager to talk about it now that it's public.

I didn't realise you actually replayed the game but left the old commentary over it until I turned on the captions.. But in my memory, you didn't rush through the mechanical age that quickly commentary wise.. but then again it was about ten years ago
