  • It has been already been a busy summer for the residents of Orkney's most northerly community in North Ronaldsay.
The island's Development Trust has launched a search for a full-time Sheep Dyke Warden and a special conference has been held to explore current and future development plans. Next up is the annual North Ronaldsay Sheep Festival, aimed at promoting and preserving the island's unique flock of seaweed-eating sheep.
It's hoped these initiatives will help attract families to move to North Ronaldsay, bringing new life to this special community.
Take a look at our video focusing on the challenges faced by the islanders, and how they're tackling the issues head on.

I really love the place! We went there Island hopping during our 2nd holiday in orkney. The trip by plane was a memorable one, what views! And as soon as we landed a local who was there by chance offered us a trip up to the lighthouse. That was so kind! The sheeps, the beaches, the land, the seals, the quiet... We had a happy day!

I recently had an experience of talking to one of the girls from Orkney, she lives now in one of Adelaide’s suburbs. She was quite impressed with my interest in Scottish culture. We decided to keep our communication, but she’s gone after the first talk and I never heard of her again. I’m happy to be back to Tasmania and after I’ll figure out of where to live and work I want to go back to developing my interest in Scottish culture and particularly cuisine again. Proud to say, I’ve managed to live on Scottish food only and I wanna live on Scottish food rest of my life.

My great great great (or so) grandfather, John White, was one of the stonemasons who helped build the old light house on Denis Head. He married Mary Tulloch from the island, later moved to Kirkwall and is buried at St Magus.
Visiting 35 years ago, the field where the little aircraft landed had first to be cleared of the cows. It was a squishy landing and as the plane was nearly full I sat in the co pilots seat with the instructions not to touch anything. Helen Swanney of Trebb was my gracious hostess right beside the air field. It was a magical visit with an invite to take tea at the Holland House and to meet the Laird. It was a wonderful trip, to a place you can only imagine.
I am planning to go back when this pandemic is is under control

Thanks for sharing this, Mary, we love to hear about folks' connections with Orkney. Fascinating that your relative helped build the Old Beacon! We'll keep our fingers crossed that you're able to make a return visit soon.

What a beautiful place! What beautiful sheep! I am currently spinning North Ronaldsay wool roving, here in Canberra, Australia, and really enjoying it. It does have long guard hairs - it won't be fine and smooth, but it will be beautifully soft and fluffy. A visit to North Ronaldsay is definitely on my wish list - and a desire to spin more of that wool.

Thanks, Robyn! Great to hear you're working with the wool on the other side of the world! Check out the North Ronaldsay Sheep Festival website, it might be the perfect trip for you to make once things are back to normal.

Is that Allison Duncan that used to be @ raddery? I was in Strathallan (Raddery school half way house) until 87. Also another peron I remember from that island was Houston Payne who came from a family of 14+; they moved from Rousay in the mid 80's; i think were crofters.
