- A complete walkthrough on replacing the alternator in a 2006 Nissan Murano. Should be the same for 2003-2007 as well as other 3.5L Nissan engines.
It includes proper removal of the radiator fans, radiator, battery and battery support shelf.
Enjoy!
For the University of RUclips, this is one of the best DIY 101 videos I've used. Professor Joe S. does a brilliant job of gracefully demonstrating the difficult job the Nissan designers left for the mechanic.
(40 year back yard mechanic here) Great video, straight to the point and narrated perfectly... Great job sir 👍 More informative than 90% of all mechanical videos on youtube. You cut through the bullshit and didnt mention safety goggles once, 😂 Good ole boy club
One Love Haha. It’s probably genetic in my case. My grandfather and Uncles on my mothers side have been hands on mechanics and contractors going back many years. We’re usually doers and not talkers. I have just enough “talking” ability to walk people through these projects though. Thanks for watching. Pls subscribe if you don’t mind.
@@JoesCarSmartsNY Yes sir, you come from good people brother I can tell... Keep up the kick ass work. Have a good 1 killer 👍
pro tip : you can watch movies on flixzone. I've been using it for watching loads of movies these days.
@Kameron Bodhi definitely, been watching on flixzone for since december myself =)
The video was spot on- thank you. Took me four hours and it is not an easy job. Tips to the new person- loosen the idler pulley nut before loosening the belt tensioner. And be sure not to tighten pulley before tightening belt tensioner. I also made the mistake of not tightening the belt tensioner before putting tire back on- so I had to remove tire twice. I suggest putting everything back together- including radiator and fan assemby, fill uo the radiator properly, then start car to listen to see if idler pulley squeeks. If not squeeking then put back on tire. Also found that putting in the set bolt on alternator helped align the alternator and I didn't have support the alternator while trying to put in the long bolt. This video is great and helped a lot.
you can pull the radiator and fans out as 1 unit, no need to take off the fan. I came mainly for the lower bot/pin reinstallation. thats where i got stuck today, when the suns back up i will try your way. Appreciate the video.
my solution to the lower bolt was to stick a pencil through ir from the outside to hold it in place, i tightened the top nut so it wouldnt shift, then used my finger tips to pinch the bolt then watched from the grill side to get it in then used the pilers to feed it through. I hate engineers. An alternator used to be a 5 min job! Now its break time and ill put it all back together and jump it to charge.
There's 2 ways to get to the Murano alternator. it's thru the radiator, or thru the AC air compressor from the bottom. Thumbs up if u agree!
There are def two different options. I prefer this method because it gets me more room to work from above instead of being more cramped in the wheel well. Different techs prefer each different method.
I replaced many many alternators form the smallest cars to the largest trucks and the Murano was the biggest pain in the ass by far It was a nightmare
Agree. I was able to remove the alternator by lowering AC compressor. Much simpler than removing fan, condenser, radiator, etc.
@@JoesCarSmartsNY I dont know joe. Just looking at the vehicle myself thought that removing the compressor would be the best. I only came here to see if there was an easier way and I am a mechanic for a living. Your method seems much more involved for just the ease as you say for top removal. Compressors love gravity too it's amazing.
They help you remove them:)
Can I remove ac compressor without dropping subframe. Bc I was told u need special tool to drop subframe and u could possibly do more damage without the tool?
I just did this job and this video was my guide from beginning to end. Job came out great but I would've payed the money to have it done had I known how difficult this would be. Have to re tighten the belts after, getting the alternator in was a super pain in the bum....thanks for the vid. Couldn't have done this without you and I did save a ton so I am happy
Thanks for your feedback, glad this helped you. It’s definitely a project for sure.
The alternator guy is excellent 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Great video. I just went through the same thing, had an oil leak which caused the alt to fail. Pain in the butt job. Wish I would have seen your video first, lol. Thanks
Thanks for your feedback. It’s definitely a challenging project, it shouldn’t be this difficulty for an accessory that will definitely need to be replaced at least once during the life of the car.
@@JoesCarSmartsNY I love my car, mine is a 2005 but hate working on it, lol.
Dave Pelcher I agree with you. It’s a very nice driving car. But many repairs are aggravating.
Was the oil leaking from your valve covers ?
Where was the oil leaking from
Excellent job with this video. I have not begun work but this video does give me confidence.
how'd it go?
I would suggest installing the top bolt first, tightening all the way, and then loosening just enough so the alternator can pivot on it. Then, align the bottom holes and push the bolt in with your hands, and then using long pliers. It took me less than 30 seconds to get it done.
Excellent idea.
Wish I would've done this instead of fighting the bottom bolt first
excellent video and very informative.thanks!!!
There's 2 ways to get to the Murano alternator. it's thru the radiator, or through the AC air compressor from the bottom. But this won't fix your problem I bet everyone replacing a rental alternators constantly don't realize that it's a ground wire a problem, or even loose relay and fuse box harness. That's it you are constantly changing batteries and alternators then it's this what I mentioned. THUMBS UP IF YOU AGREE?!?
While your suggested solution is possible, there is a well documented problem with alternators on these Muranos. The first step should be testing the voltage output. If that’s low or non existent then an alternator replacement is appropriate. It’s the most likely culprit. If there are repeated alternator failures or voltage fluctuations then wiring and grounds should certainly be inspected.
Thanks 💪
Joe -- @SharkeishaJohnson is right. You made one of the most informative, step-by-step videos that help us DIYers DIY well. Thanks, man. You just gained by "subscribe."
Dave Wilson So glad this helped you. Thanks for the feedback.
Thank you for posting this video. I didn't want to mess with having the AC evacuated then paying to refill it. It really wasn't all that hard except the bolt on the bottom. It did take some time but if you don't rush everything just seems to so pretty smooth. The tensioner pulley took some figuring out since Ive never messed with one of that sort, but thank goodness for RUclips right?
Thanks for your feedback. I’m glad this helped you. That’s why I started making these videos, so that if other people just needed to be pointed in the right direction on this stuff I could help them.
If you don't fix your oil leak this will continue to happen i had a plate built on the alternator so the oil don't get in the coils 4 years later still running
Was the oil leaking from your valve covers ?
It sure was a partial leak. Bad valve cover gasket. You have to be on them.
Hi Joe did a great job explaining this i followed the video and got the job done however if i can add a suggestion you skipped over on how to remove the serpentine belt and also since there is another belt for the power steering i figured might as well replace it, i located the belt tensioner but couldn't locate the other bolt to lossen the pump. And if I may add Nissan technology STINKS.
tony dooda I have another video here on RUclips that covers the Serpentine belt procedure. Hope that helps other people.
Thanks for watching. Please subscribe if you don’t mind.
I replaced many many alternators form the smallest cars to the largest trucks and the Murano was the biggest pain in the ass by far It was a nightmare
I agree. Hahaah
Hello, if an alternator is replaced, would the alternator belt be easy to see if rotten, when removing the old alternator, or it would not be easy to see at all?
The belt gets removed during this and will be very easy to inspect. Fine cracks in the belt are okay. Deep cracks all the way through or missing chunks would require a new belt.
@@JoesCarSmartsNY....understood... thanks alot for your prompt respond.
Thx !!! great video.
A 3ft led bar would throw a great deal of light everywhere from the top of that hood,
Things are dirt cheap. Try Harbor Freight.
Light makes videos much better and it makes working time cut down dramatically for one reason.
Working in shadows takes time:)
Hey Joe... thanks for the video! I’m stuck... i can’t get the idler pulley off to get to the alternator pin /bolt.... it seems like the nut is seized and rusted on.... I’ve tried liquid wrench and 3 in 1 high performance lubricant.... no luck! Can the arm the pulley is attached to be removed... that seems seized also but at least I can get a ratchet on it.... or what about using heat? Any suggestions?
I replied to your comment on the other video. I hope it’s helpful.
I got if off from above with a tension bar..
I tried to avoid the battery tray and the radiator. Not a good idea. Note that the radiator has 2 giant hoses that will flood coolant out so be prepared and two small hoses on the bottom of the radiator that will leak oil.
You said you upgraded the battery terminals, I didn't see the fuse block that is connected to the positive side, did you remove that and replace it with something else?
Brandy Sappraicone I don't remember mine having a fuse block attached to the positive terminal directly. Whatever cables were there have been attached to the new terminal.
Thanks for posting this video but you went the wrong way of doing this. These alternators are designed to come out from the bottom. You do not have to remove the radiator at all.
Markus Daniels I wish I had been able to see how to get it from below. That’s for sure. I just remember looking at the AC compressor and not seeing a way around it.
@@JoesCarSmartsNY it has bolts on the side and two in the front
Markus Daniels I see that now after looking up a video here about that method.
It does sound like it’s pretty tricky to get the unit out that way. If it went smoothly it would save time for sure, but if it didn’t maybe it would end up being more hassle.
I suppose I would probably still use the same method I did knowing that I will have ample room to maneuver the alternator out.
this won't fix your problem I bet everyone replacing a alternators constantly don't realize that it's a ground wire a problem, or even loose relay and fuse box harness. That's it you are constantly changing batteries and alternators then it's this what I mentioned. THUMBS UP IF YOU AGREE?!?
@bob how do you fix this ground wire or loose relay fuse box problem?
Joe , I am working on 2007 , the bottom bolts keep spinning and won’t come out i striped it too , but I found out there’s a clip. Or something in the back holding on to it how. Do i remove it ? Thanks man
At about 11:15 you can see what the bottom but/bolt configuration is. Hope that helps.
I believe when I was doing it does not hold in the other side of the bolt I stripped it ... do you think using a dreamer to cut off the nut is possible ?
Mr.FenceGuy Okay. So you’re turning the nut, and the threaded pole is just spinning but won’t release the nut? If you can fit a dremel tool in there I would go ahead a cut that nut off any way possible. You can then get a through bolt or if you have time you could order the correct bolt that has the little attachment to hold itself in place.
i notice you have alot of oil leak is that the valve cover gaskets? @joe s.
That’s true. I’ve since fixed that issue.
@@JoesCarSmartsNY was it the valve gaskets?
ROCKY_704_ It was.
@@JoesCarSmartsNY ty u sir
I took off both bolts to the alternator I just have to wiggle it out now but I did everything except taking out the radiator i have cardboard protecting the radiator is it possible to take it out like that?
You may be able to get it out, it will probably be tricky tho.
Joe S. I got the alternator out and I took it to a alternator shop that specializes in alternators and they said my alternators good
NFL YoungBoy That’s interesting. What caused you to want to remove it?
Joe S. Because autozone said my alternator was bad then I took the alternator out then went to a shop that specializes in alternators and he tested it and said it was good then I brought him my battery and my battery was bad
Joe S. Does the fan belt have to be at a specific tension and if so where do I get the tension gauge tool from?
At 10:42 what’s the best way to loosen the alternator bolts a wrench or socket?
I believe I used a ratchet on that bolt. That one’s 14mm
Yeah I’m having trouble here too. Not enough room to get a deep well on and awkward angle for a short socket. I think that’s why many people are ruining the head of the nut.
After releasing the tensioner bolt on the serpentine belt. The pulley that I have to remove to get the alternator off has a stripped nut and I can't break it. Help!
That’s gonna be tricky to remove now that it’s stripped. You want to be trying Vise Grips for that if possible.
The other possible alternative is called a Low Profile External Bolt Extractor tool. That will bite the bolt head and you can turn the extractor with a wrench. I’m not certain you can fit the extractor Tool in that tight space, but it may be possible. Good luck.
so my boyfriend can’t fit the ratchet between the nut and fender wall to get the bottom bolt off ... how did you do it ?
If the ratchet won’t fit you’ll have to go to a wrench instead. I only remember clearance being an issue with the serpentine belt tensioner pulley tho. I don’t remember clearance being a problem for the alternator lower bolt.
The serpentine belt tensioner pulley has to be removed to get at that lower bolt also.
Joe S. ok thank you so much, we were at the junkyard watching your videos trying to get it off an 06 murano you helped a lot. He already got all the other bolts off so once he gets the pulley off do you think he would run into any other issues? or will the alternator come right off then
Janiya Height Of course I can’t see what he’s seeing right now, but if he’s following the video and gets that pulley off then he should be good. He may have to pry the pulley away from the engine at the same time he uses a wrench to remove the nut from the center of the pulley. If not the nut may just keep spinning. Good luck to you both.
Is it possible to tell me what the actual size is of the alternator bolt?
At 11:22 I’ve describe the upper bolt as having a 12 mm head and the lower bolt using a nut with a 14mm head. Hopefully that helps.
Or are you asking the actual dimensions of each bolt, not the heads that you turn to remove them ?
@@JoesCarSmartsNY correct, not the heads but the dimensions of the larger bolt. If possible, it would be an immense help!

This looks right to me.

You could have saved yourself alot of trouble by removing the A/C compressor.... You took the long way around.

How should I loosen up the screw underneath the battery I tired so hard won’t even move 2:04/13:57
It might be stuck in there. Try spraying some PB Blaster or other penetrant oil and letting it sit for a while. If it’s still stuck you’ll have to use a larger ratchet to force it out or break it out.
If you really can’t get it out you could try to work around the tray but I’m not sure that’s possible.
this to much work....i went after. its doable up to 9:33 but from there you gotta wing it since the steps are not shown
After all the 110amp murano alternator problems. I went with a maxima alternator and I've already changed the pigtail to work on the maxima alternator. I can't get the damn idler pulley loose or off for that matter. Stripped the nut BAD. Used an airhammer, 14mm extractor set (only problem is its a 3/8 drive set, and you can't fit the ratchet between the nut and the fender wall) I can't get it for nothing. Any input before I take to it with a grinder
I removed mine with a box end wrench and a cheater piece of EMT.
Is it the same.to.change for 2015
Not too sure. If the alternator is in the same location this should be similar though.
@@JoesCarSmartsNY thank you
You don’t have to take fan off to get the radiator out.
Nice. Thanks for adding this. So, you’d pull it with the fan attached then?
@@JoesCarSmartsNY yes
I am about to take my alternator out so I was watching your video on how to do it
I watched this video just to see how the serpentine belt comes off and he doesnt even show it

I have a 06 Murano and I've had to replace 4 alternators this car has been nothing but trouble 😑
Montavias Peoples This is only my second alternator thankfully. But we've had plenty of other issues.
Joe S. yea the list goes on and on but good luck
What do you think about going through the side and moving the ac compressor enough so you can pull alternator out?
NICHOLAS GONSALVES I found the compressor difficult to remove. It has bolts on the front and side.
It's worth a shot though if it looks good to you. There are many different solutions to the same problem.
Just drop the 2 front sub frame bolts makes life so much easier
How do i take radiator off??
judith romero There are two plastic retainers on top. Disconnect those. Remove radiator fans. Also disconnect hoses and lines from radiator. Then lift radiator out.
I believe this is all contained in this video.
Joe S. Do you know if there difference between 2004 and 2005 alternator
judith romero There should be no difference
Lol. It should be "Nissan Murano changing alternator the hard way"
Please share the easier way. I’m sure it will save people a lot of time. Personally I didn’t see another good way. It seemed that there wasn’t another way to get the alternator out. I could get it unbolted and disconnected, but clearance for removal didn’t seem possible with the radiator in place.
Joe S.
I apologized that you misunderstood my comment. I meant the car itself is a piece of crap that made everything so difficult to work on. I can't wait to get rid of my 05. Have you ever tried using OEM alternator on this car?
Never tried using an OEM as a replacement. I usually prefer to have the defective unit rebuilt by a local specialist that will replace all the potentially troublesome internal parts, but I couldn’t wait for that with this car. Had to get a refurbed unit.
Great video to take out radiator and battery but terrible video to replace alternator everything was off already
This is why I don't want a Nissan it's too much work & it cost too much to fixs
