I was a teensy bit worried to see how different Kiryu and Ryoma are, but the moment he stood up to defend the woman and her daughter despite how likely it could've ended with his death I knew that's pure Kiryu. Standing up for what you believe in no matter the consequences? Yup, that's the Heart of gold, dumb of ass we all know and love.
Samurai were the military/police/upper class, sometimes two of these roles, sometimes all three, depending on when you’re talking about. In the Warring States period they were military, but by the time of this game they were the cops and upper class of Japan, with different ranks within their class. Some were noble and helped people, many were the opposite.
What I like about this is that it connects between the fractions of a storyline and the non-fiction of the history of Japan. I have study a lot of japanese history, which is one of my favorites, and this game nailed it!!! Thanks for the video Jess!!
That's definitely the thing about Ishin we have to keep in mind. Even though we know these characters from the rest of the franchise, we don't know THESE characters in this particular story. Some characters still line up with their modern counterpart's personality and motivations, but that's not always the case.
"Black Ships" refers really to any of the Western ships. First came the Portuguese, then the Dutch, then the Americans. Most recently in game terms would have been the arrival of four US warships about 10 years earlier to Edo bay, whose commander threatened to attack if they didn't open up for trade. This ended nearly 200 years of Japanese self-imposed isolation and opened up political discourse with the outside world, eventually opening Japan up to trade with other nations.
Not gonna lie, it almost put some tears to my eyes hearing you talk about this series, because I feel similar about it. This series always feels like a little family and it's great to have you as a part of it through your videos and thoughts! So remember they're just rubber bullets and all the bad guys getting stabbed just carried tomatoes on their bodies for lunch!😉 ( To keep the lore alive!🤣🤣🤣) I'm very much looking forward watching your videos although I need to pause to not get spoilered too much! Good to have you and have much fun as your videos always are as well! Greetings from Germany!
Wild Dancer has to be one of my fav styles in an RGG game since Breaker in Y0. Just spam Circle 3 or four times, and you'll clear out a group of enemies surrounding you like it's nothing!
Still havent beaten the game (got caught up playing house with Haruka and my pets for about two days), but its shaping up to be one of my favorite RGG games. It has a charm to it that I felt when playing Yakuza 3, but with my favorite style of combat (used in Y5, 0, and K1). The story is really cool, especially if you have some prior knowledge of Japanese history, and I really enjoy the map having distinct locations that all feel very different, without almost any empty space in the world.
They can change his name, wardrobe and hairstyle but he will always be Kazuma Kiryu to me lol. Looking forward to this playthrough, Jessica and the eventual English playthrough of the OG Yakuza game. Love this franchise
On July 8, 1853, the U.S. Navy sent four warships into the bay at Edo and threatened to attack if Japan did not begin trade with the West. Their arrival marked the reopening of the country to political dialogue after more than two hundred years of self-imposed isolation. Trade with Western nations would not come until the Treaty of Amity and Commerce more than five years later. In particular, kurofune refers to Mississippi, Plymouth, Saratoga, and Susquehanna of the Perry Expedition for the opening of Japan, 1852-1854, that arrived on July 14, 1853, at Uraga Harbor (part of present-day Yokosuka) in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan under the command of United States Commodore Matthew Perry.[2] Black refers to the black color of the older sailing vessels, and the black smoke from the coal-fired steam engines of the American ships. In this sense, the kurofune became a symbol of the ending of isolation. -Wikipedia Also on Okada Izo: He was one of the 4 Great Manslayers, infamous for a series of political assassinations during the Bakumatsu period who were opposed to the Shogunate, with Izo being the most infamous among them due to depictions in popular culture and his relationship with the real Sakamoto Ryoma.
Agree, now lets hope for kenzan next... Heck, i dont even mind if they go n remade dead souls too, i know there r some who not a fan, but i am fine as long as there is more kiryu time for me😆
20:48 Pretty certain you were doing your Makoto voice right there lmao Aside from that, Welcome back to the Yakuza/Like a Dragon universe! I really shouldn't watch this just yet since I'll be picking up my copy later this week. But, I couldn't wait to watch your playthru. It still feels surreal that we finally have Ishin after over a decade of it being a Japan-exclusive entry. So hype for this!
It's not needed to play previous RGG games for Ishin but it's really fun how it messes with your expectations like who Ryouma's brother turned out to be.
just to remind you the game engine is Unreal Engine not the Dragon Engine. but yeah seeing you playing this game that was only released in Japan is awesome.
I really like this game, hope you have fun! This game runs on Unreal Engine instead of any other engines RGG has ever used for the Ryu Ga Gotoku/Like A Dragon games, so it's gonna have some differences, but it's still super fun nonetheless!
I love the game so much! When I played the ishin on cinematic version, I was like watching the classic movie. I love to watch your gameplay and see your reactions.
I had a very similar reaction to the beginning. I was absolutely giddy lol. Its the closest I've felt to being a kid again on christmas morning hahaha. Great video! Also you probably figured it out by now but R1 is the lock on button during combat. Its a lifesaver! :)
it really gets me in the feels seeing mine right in the beginning, he could've been such an amazing ally in the rest of the yakuza series 😭 or at least he would've kept daigo from being stupid in yakuza 4
I love that even though you are very clearly hacking people to pieces and shooting them in the face, the game is still going "no you're taking them down nonlethally, you're not a killer." XD
Haha, i also do the same... I just tell myself, 'kiryu/ryoma is like himura in rurouni kenshin, n all his weapons has reverse blade on it'😅 ( n since there is the scarred model of ryoma that how i justify ryoma action 🤣🤣🤣
Honestly don't feel bad about using Wild Dance (Sword+Gun) style, best one on the game. Either that or Sword is your best bet. Unarmed/Brawler is good for the heat actions but every enemy has a weapon so you might as well do the same.
There is no "lock on" system but if you remember from the previous Yakuza games best is to be on Fighting stance. That will always help you hit the closest enemy
Originally I hoped the translation would keep the historical tone of the dialogue, but with the loyalists already having semi-automatic guns, 50 years ahead of their time, I guess the modern language doesn't feel too out of place in the Ishin timeline.
So....I ended up buying Like A Dragon earlier this year and heard about Ishin. I ended up buying all the Yakuza games, I see Ishin is on sale @ steam for 50% so...maybe? I just wish there were Eng VAs like LAD had. However, it still looks fun. Is Ishin a standalone? Or do I need to play the others in the series first?
This is a stand alone! The story is based on a real person rather than anyone from the previous games. It's just using the character's likeness of the Yakuza series :)
@AGirlAndAGame ok, interesting! Well a 50% black Friday deal for the digital deluxe edition is a good deal then. I'll go and grab it. Is judgement series in yakuza world too?
My theory is that kiryu well not kiryu isn't really Ryoma since he killed the real Ryoma and took his name so I wonder what's his real name? I can't wait to find out as I continue playing

@AGirlAndAGame Hey I'm just playing but to each their own. No hate. I didn't like it myself. I didn't feel engaged in the combat and I didn't feel like a badass like the other yakuza games
Thank you to SEGA and RGG Studios for the game key! I'm SO excited to finally play this game. I hope you guys enjoy my playthrough of this game ♥
It's not as good as yakuza but it's fairly decent
I'm so excited for this
I'm so happy that you're playing this game! I'm busting out the pop corn and soda for your playthrough
Man, seeing them without their iconic tattoo (especially kiryu/ryoma) feels really weird to me, but nevertheless i still hype for it😆...

There is a lock on but there's no reticle or aiming target. It's more like facing the enemy, hold R1, and move Ryoma around to stay focused on enemy.
I just call the main characters ancestors by the names we know because otherwise it would get really confusing!
It's been like forever. I was waiting for your playthrough of ishin. Great playthrough jess.
