Porcupine Catch and Cook Clean | Learn The Primitive Hangi | Corn Meal Bread With Mortar & Pestle
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 20 июл 2017
- In order to protect his dog, Adam takes the porcupine. It is well known that porcupine and dogs don't mix where porcupine will put quills into the muzzle of the dog which is very painful. Porcupine are very plentiful up North and sadly, because they have so little food, they often end up dead by the side of the road as they try to find new trees to eat. Reducing their numbers means that fewer will end up wasted on the road. They also make great table fair and are eaten around the world!
In this epic episode Jeremy and I prepare a porcupine in a very traditional way. Learn how to pluck, singe and scrape off the quills and hair. We then examine how to cook using a primitive earth oven by covering it with white hot hot rocks and coals and cover overnight with dirt to steam and bake.
This entire series is about catch n cook!
Watch and find out how well it cooked and whether this traditional famine food is palatable. We discuss porcupine as a "survival food" and how it was traditionally used.
Also on the menu is crushed cow corn in a traditional mortar and pestle combined with egg and fresh strawberries and blueberries with farmed raised pork fat, cooked over fire as a corn meal.
Thanks to Adam Craig Outdoors for supplying us with a porcupine, filming it, and then letting me use the footage!

This is my first time hearing or seeing a person cooking and eating a porcupine
Was following a porcupine on a deer hunt one day-- Porcupine was watching me while it walked. It walked head first into a tree, squeaked and did a few somersaults as it fell over. My most memorable porcupine experience.
How did I even get here. There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home!!!
You are not dreaming ,,lol
I FELL THE SAME!
Now I gotta check off Porcupines off my list of cute animals :[

😂😂😂
I was in the military in Israel a long time ago, 1997, over there there is a military profession called the "gashash" - a tracker, they are usually Bedouins who know every animal, every leaf and can track an intrusion over miles. One day on a patrol the gashash stops, pulls out his knife and runs somewhere, he came back 15m later with a huge porcupine. Cooked it over coals - maybe cause I was hungry, maybe the rush of novelty but the meat was amazing. Attiya Kraine if your read this man - thank you for the wonderful experiences and the knowledge you shared.
I think is not porcupine but gaza children.
You are cannibal
I think I would have to be EXTREMELY hungry to even consider eating porcupine because there was nothing appetizing about the way that thing looked. In fact, I might consider becoming a vegetarian if that were the only meat available. But thanks for showing us how it's done.

You guys did a awesome job. I ate porcupine 445 years ago when I was a kid. My dad used to trapped many of them for meal d and it was one of my favorites meats. We scratched off the needles over the fire till skin turn dark black and then soaked the bucket of water for an hour then you use the knife kinda brushed off the dark skin out and left the nice light brown skin on it and cleaned up and cut into small pieces marinated with your favorite sauce and spice bbq. If a bomb I remembered..thumbs up guys!
445 years ago, incredible
Oop spelling error it was 45 years ago not 445 years. Lol . Have a great catch and enjoy!

We cooked a skunk and it tasted great! We used the ground hole dirt method, but we used the 🦨 skunk’s dung to add a brown corn mush. It was delicious!! An old man named Zeke showed us the recipe. I bet old Zeke is still roaming the backwoods of some forest.

We call this method of cooking a hangi where I'm from. A couple of tips we do is light the fire in the hole, it removes moisture in the ground and prevents the walls from collapsing into your food, I don't think the rocks were nowhere near hot enough and cook it in a dry area or covered if it rains. overall great vid, really enjoy the content, look forward to the next vid
You can add heat pack to keep the oven hot.... Just joking... In case someone takes this serioulsy and try it...
ThePUHIPI in addition to this comment. a shallower hole- easyer to fuss around with the fire ect, a base layer of rocks than the meal than more rocks & more green stuff around the meal (after the inner layer can be anything non toxic). I've never de quilled anything but my self and dog noses... great demo . the 2 of you make great team of adventurers keep it up.
ThePUHIPI love hangi lol especially when it's done well
Try keep ashes out...gives strong taste and wicked heartburn. A little water splashed over package would help with steam. That small package should take a couple of hours max.

First time seeing porcupine climbing a tree
Good job guys nice food keep up the good work ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🇯🇲
I'll never understand all these tree huggers that are hating on these guys for hunting. It's the circle of life guys, if you don't like it, that's fine, just don't click on the video. They made this video to teach people survival skills/techniques, and to try something. An animal isn't human, they don't have the brainpower to comprehend different methods of death. Yes, they feel suffering, but in this case, there was none of that. And the other thing is, almost no animals have the physical capability to feel longing, or missing for a "Family member". To lower it down, a porcupine is a Rodent, which in many regards are seen as pests, just as rats, mice, squirrels and other rodents. Again, no rodent has the capability to know the difference between being ate by a wolf, bear, cougar, snake etc. than being shot in the head. In most regards, this is an easy and painless death compared to the struggle and battling death they often succumb to in the wild.
Don't hate on these guys for practicing what is their right, and their natural, and instinctual food gathering // survival method, which is hunting/gathering. When it comes down to it, we're all here because of these abilities humans developed over thousands of years.
You said it better than I could!
The Wooded Beardsman next on the menu. The elusive wild jiggly puff
I don't have an issue with hunting- when people NEED to or in cases such as white tail deer in Georgia for population control. But this was hunting just for hobby and entertainment which I personally don't agree with. Unless you can explain it in a logical way I'll continue to keep my stance that for first work countries it's useless and barbaric to hunt for hobby, sport, or entertainment if the meat isn't donated to those in need.
well said!
The Wooded Beardsman that's not my problem- I understand and very much so respect that. I actually find videos of this nature but more about fishing very interesting. I don't value the porcupine higher but cows and chickens have been genetically modified to yield the most food while these animals haven't been. For me personally it makes more sense to eat more common animals such as deer, cows, chicken, etc. I lm really not trying to bash or anything I whole heartedly just want to understand.
Good work boyz,Just a tip for a hangi next time 3 hours burn time heating the rocks and 3 hours in the ground cooking you need to cover it with a soaked sheet or potatoe sacks and a tarp on top then cover with earth then it will be mean az make sure no steam escapes,Meat tender and falls off the bone with crispy skin,Try it with brisket,Lamb,Chicken with cabbage potatoes n whatever,
2k people who eat McDonald's once a week disliked "cause cruelty breh".
DJ Akademiks MCDonald's is 5 times more cruel than this. When I say that I am not being sarcastic
Omar Elkamel. WTF. NATURE IS CRUEL. END OF STORY.
Adon Lando yes but in nature animals get to live free their whole life until they die or get hunted. Most farms these days are so much more cruel. They keep the animals in cages their whole life.
What's wrong with McDonald's?
DailyRandomz everything is wrong with McDonald's. Lol.
This is a great video you guys, are incredible. I don't know if I will try the porcupine, but the cornbread was on point. Now even in New Jersey in certain areas in Pennsylvania, they have certain cornbreads that only horses will eat so, I'm assuming this was consistent of that. But great video and I will enjoy watching the rest of your other ones
The quils alone got me calling it quits lol
good looking free ranged porcky!! lol Glad you guys were able to eat it. That made shooting it much easier as i generally leave animals in my yard alone. I have been seeing more of these each year so knocking off one won't make any difference around my place.

The Wooded Beardsman weird looking dog though, you should probably get him checked for mange. Dogs don't usually have quills just so you know

All the porcupines in the world thanks you for this video. After that, barely anyone will shoot and eat them LOL. Chris playing it safe let Adams try it first "Is it good?" and Adma to reply "Yeah". Not "Yes absolutely fantastic" or "hmm very good". Just "Good". And the meat doesn't look tasty at all. Dick Proenneke said in his book that he would shoot the porcupine eating up everything around his log cabin. And the young ones were more tasty. If I remember well, he boiled them. BTW it's ground cooking. Earth Oven is an oven above ground level. Jon Townsends made a very good video about how to make one. Thanks for the video. Interesting and it confirmed me that porcupine are for survival only. Or to make sure a "friend" will never come back to eat at your home LOL.
Cheers!
In my experience boiling is the worst way to cook meat. For stews I pan fry or roast first for texture and flavor. Then stew for tenderness if needed.
That's funny! Yeah hangi is probably the right word, but maybe only since Mears used it. I've seen others use "earth oven" for a pit oven like this. Anyway you cut it, it's cooking in the earth LOL. I have a book that references this as an earth oven as well. Probably people who actually cooked like this never passed on the name to any people alive today. Maybe someone needs to look up the history. My guess is that it's done in hotter climates where moisture and rain aren't as big a factor.
The porcupine wasn't all bad. I'd eat it again if I had to :)
Duxdawg I once had boiled chicken and.... My God.... What to say about that? YUK! Arrrrggggh! Or something like that I guess lol. It wasn't good at all. Like I said, it's Dick Pronnneke who mentioned that in his book and of Dick says it then.... Maybe it's very specific to porcupines? Otherwise I agree with you, I'd rater grill or cook in the oven than to boil meat.
@Chris Yeah, in fact, bottom line, it's an oven made with earth lol I'll do some research to find out if there's a specific name for the one "under earth". I know it was a very common way of cooking meat on the tropical islands. They were digging a hole then setting a fire inside . Once lots of coals they would put big logs over it then wrapped the meat in palm tree leaves and burris everything for 6 to 8 hours I think.
O A BBQ stand for barbeque.
Amazing, this is soldier life, especially those in forest mission
Man, you don't know how much I would love to get my hands on all those quills for the greatest fishing floats I have ever had. No sticky pigs here in Florida so it's really to find them.
29:58 “ew its hand it touched me” lmao
Lmfao it got my stomach weak
“It’s dinner guys”
For future reference, put a soaking wet canvas (old military half tent) over the greens BEFORE putting the dirt on top. Then just pull the top layer of dirt off when you're ready to uncover it. It keeps the top dirt out and also seals the moisture in better to tenderize meat more. Need moisture to tenderize the meat.
I'm good on sweaty tarp smoked meat
Kapai....Hangi is the best.
@@creatednordestroyed5339 😂🤣😂🤣💯
Correct ! should use more leaves . Surround the pit with leaves sticking out Of the pit which then can be easily be foulded back to cover the meat from dirt....Banana leaves are the best traditional foil!

Not sure why all the thumbs down, probably city folk who think food comes from the grocery store. As long as it's used responsibly and not wasted, I see nothing wrong with eating wild animals. It lived a proper life as it was intended, not living in captivity until it's planned and scheduled demise. To me that's the real tragedy.
A lot of people over here can’t see the bigger picture. That porcupine lived a wonderful free life. It could of been captive and would of been in line with its family in the slaughter house.
Well I am not vegan, but sorry to me ur justification seems conventional
I agree with you, I just don’t understand why some people hunt for sport. Hunting for no good reason is wrong in my opinion. If you eat it, It’s ok because the animal would’ve given its life to help you live another day. I don’t know if that makes sense, but let me know what you guys think!
Same people who buy a pound of chicken breast no hesitation
More upset that he cooked it with the hair and intestines in place. Seems like it would destroy the flavor and waste the animal more than anything.
I guess the point of this cooking method is to display the great outdoors lifestyle. Looks fascinating, but I know I would enjoy the meat better with seasoning, open fire grilling first, then boil finishing in that pot with veggies. That would definitely ensure complete elimination of any parasites.
I had to grill the meat dry and grill the skin crispy and then take it to cooking. I like to eat wild food.👍👍🤟
People are really too stuck in their own world sometimes. These guys were really respectful to the animal. They killed it fast and humanely, cooked and ate it, and didnt kill it just to kill it. These guys are respectful hunters and bushmen. Don't judge them because we buy our food already dead. Actually it's more than likely the meat you eat lived in horrible conditions all its life and either lived long enough to see slaughter or died of disease.
Well said friend!
Very unlikely that farmed produce was kept in poor conditions-it is not at all efficient to do so-bankrupcy follows farmers who have bad practices in that regard.
Steve Taylor ignorance is bliss eh.
Perhaps on your part it is?
I spent a very large portion of my life as a farmer who treated the animals I reared the very best way I knew how,not only because it was the right way to do things but also because content happy animals perform better no matter the species.
I can assure you that my animals always knew where their next meal was coming from and when as well as never knowing the dangers of predators (besides me of course) and that they were dispatched in the most humane way available.
In nature that is never the case!
How do replies get highlighted?

Gut it, skin it, cut off the head and feet, season it up and roast it low and slow over medium coals for an hour. Then wrap it up in foil and cook it another hour with some wild botanicals... like leeks and burdock root or onions, garlic or whatever you have. This will keep it moist and tasty like pulled pork or roast beef. Any tough wild game is great cooked this way.
You forgot the first step, pouring boiling water over the animal to easily remove the hair and quills.
