  • Last night I had the luxury of enjoying a two hour conversation at an Estuary meeting where we discussed the nature and (im)possibility of kings. I think the dialogue reflected what I've noticed to be a growing contemporary desire for a king -- a felt need for the return or arrival of a king. Brilliant analysis, and the Estuary meeting structure sounds amazing. This is a fascinating topic, and I love how you tied the desire for a king to a desire to be recognized and to "surrender to something," as well as how you compared the structure of "having a king" with how judges were "raised up" in the Torah. I also really like how you compared "having a king" with Kafka. Excellent work!
