Good to have you back buddy. I've done several DIY builds on vans but never come across the recycled plastic bottle insulation before. I've now stuffed a couple of rolls in every orifice (don't half make your eyes water in one of them!) I am ply lining now and for the first time using these self DRILLING screws, mate if you have not heard of them get some as they save a lot of time and are easier than drilling holes then changing bits to screw in screws. I'm using a fixed (but easily removed) bed system to from Ikea. You might have heard of them they are called Skorva adjustable bed frame sections. ✌
Having the plywood get wet and then using it, that's what creates mold. That's why new houses that get built in the rainy seasons get bad mold after some time because some nut built it during the rainy seasons. People think letting the wood "dry" is fine when it's not. Wood is porous. It's in the wood already and sometimes isn't completely dry. You're going to build up moisture within that and eventually rotting will set in. Goodluck.
Thanks again , nice journey and nice to see you’re not rushing it , I had to take apart a professional’ conversion this week and it was 10% of what you’ve done . You can use foil tape or gaffer tape , you can’t use parcel or masking tape - the adhesive dries out so the joints will fail. If your drilling in and catching insulation pop a bit of masking tape near the end so you’ll judge a depth of say 5mm to stop going to far , buy hooked ‘Stanley ‘ blades - they are like a hot knife in butter on pvc and lastly if you buy the ply from b and q they’ll cut it for free for use ( saves dust and mess . And wasn’t the weather yuk here this week rainy walk at maenporth this morning Keep it and a great watch and good content- thank you
Great to see the van coming along Shaun. The DPM that youve used will indeed stop the damp coming through but as with houses it's about stopping the warm air inside meeting the cold surface of the van. My worry is that the condensation will still form on the metal and will puddle inside and you'll never see it as its all hidden 🙏 hope I'm wrong but good seeing you back "at work" 👍
The dodomat liner i installed in the previous video will prevent any condensation happening behind the vapour barrier at least that’s what I’m hoping anyway
Yes Shaun, like commented on a previous video, those little circular discs on the roof will fail.I used the roof and gutter sealant from screwfix on mine problem solved, 18 months in Welsh valleys weather 👍🏼🤣
Another great video Shaun. Even hubby has subscribed to your channel now! I love the way you’re taking your time and thoroughly doing this van build. When people buy a van already converted it’s really difficult to know if the insulation part of the build has been skimped on. We can all see you’re not taking any short cuts here. Well done. Good health to you and your little family 😀
A thought for more natural light while retaining stealth. I did a Transit Connect I converted a few years back and I got a lot of light from having a skylight in the roof. It still kept the stealth because nobody could see it from street level and was really good for ventilation at night as well.
So happy u finally posted!! Been following these series so that I can build my van!! U explain so well. Thank u ❤ PS hope ur wife and the little one is well.
Great progress in a fortnight of rain and gusting wind - I've been working outside in the southern part of Cornwall for that fortnight (with a van and a 'tent' for shelter), so I'm very impressed with how much you've achieved. Any work in a van takes far longer than you expect - nothing's straight / simple / obvious, everything needs working out, test-fitting or doing twice! At least you are now warm! Possibly too warm! The stealth benefits of not having windows are clear ... though I did wonder when you mentioned a week of continual rain shortly after you said you can open the doors to let in light ... At least you have plans to fit a window if you (or Kate) decide it's needed! Glad you have found time (I'm between supporting your wife with the baby duties - paternity leave is there for family time :-) to get back to converting your van - and provide great videos to entertain and inform! (BTW, if you like Thai food and find yourself near Helston, jumunjy is well worth a visit)
Quick question. When you said you didn't screw the ply to the walls because the insulation would wreck the drill bit, isn't that the same as screening the battons to the walls?
When you screw the buttons to the walls you can see what you’re drilling into. If you held a large piece of plywood up against the wall of the van and screwed directly into the metal you wouldn’t be able to see if you’re avoiding insulation or not
Very inspiring.. some great ideas there especially the ply framing. Keep up the good work. Mine is a slow work in progress to thanks to the weather 🌧️👌🏼
me n me dad sealed like 22 plugs uptop made square for max fan and installed that and cut/install side window on first day condensation management is important for all this sticky stuff lol

Great work! This might be a silly question but when you screw on the plywood in this with where do you screw it onto? The actual metal of the van? Just the insulation? Would love to know!
Coming along nice Shaun .It’s good to see that your taking your time on this build to get the van how you want it .And I assume that you are going to fit a side window in on the sliding door or not going for that .

Quick question, are you drilling and screwing directly into the interior metal panels of the van? So pilot hole drilling first and then using self tapping screws to hold the ply down? Thanks again for the videos!
Yes pilot hole into the metal strengthening of the van the self tappers. The when you put your ply lining up or you panelling just screw into the framing
I have a question for mr love Sundays …. First let me start by saying love the channel and all the hard work you put into the videos however I really do think the “Stealth” camper vision has gone if I see a van in a lay by or in a car park I’m immediately thinking camper / camping. Everything you need to put in it to make it safe a roof vent no stealth etc etc wouldn’t you rather a good set of windows you can see out of for security without the delay of cameras and invest in 3 or 4 of the different types of safety devices such a running locks door jams etc plus you can have it open for cooking and if your gunna have the doors open people already know it’s a camper lol ? Just a thought but that’s the beauty of building your own van your own way ! Can’t wait to see it finished ! 🤌🏻
I guess I just don’t want windows I quite like the feel of being in a little den without any windows but like I said I can always add them later as it’s easier to add them if needed then it is to remove them if I don’t need them
In my experience I can tell when a vehicle is a stealth camper because I have owned 2 but when I camp out in mine it seems that the average layperson does not and when you are being stealthy it's not other stealth campers you are hiding from, it's nosy neighbours and dog walkers. I'm so non-stealthy at the moment I have an awning hanging off the side and a kayak on the roof but I've had people walk right past the car with me inside and not give it a second glance.
I've only got a low top lwb vivaro (like your old van). Regularly put kayaks on the roof so I've always been unsure about a higher top van (even just the next height up), even though internally it would be much more comfortable.... I've always been keen to change it, but have you got any hang ups about being just that bit taller?
My Vivaro with the roof deck on it only just fits under the barriers so I made the decision that if I’m going to go high top I may as well go really high! There’s still plenty of places to park without barriers so I’m not concerned but then again I haven’t started using it yet 😂
@@LoveSundays hmm that's true, I guess once I have the kayaks on the roof I'm way out of luck with barrier heights anyway, so it doesn't matter. Are you looking at a roof deck or carrying stuff on the roof? Cheers for the reply!
Good to see your back mate how's Charlie boy and his mum doing ? Vans coming on a treat ey like yr thinking on on the membrane 😊mental note on that one
You don’t have to change your van to a camper van with the dvla to use and insure it as a camper van. The rules are so strict to change it to a camper van you even have to put stupid stickers down the side of the van. Of all the vans I’ve converted in the past I have never worried about that just drive slower on the motorway
Hi, really enjoying your build so far. I'm currently converting a 2016 transit so its really useful to see the same vehicle. I've been struggling to figure out how to get around all the odd shapes and curves What screws are you using to attach the 12mm ply to the metalwork? Self tappers or are you drilling the wood and metal then using a normal screw through both? Thanks a lot Ed
Hi Ed, I drilled pilot holes in the metal with a 4mm drill but then screwed 5mm thick self tappers through the wood into the metal. And it’s really sturdy
@@LoveSundays Thanks for getting back to me. Cool, I'll have a go. Is the aim to get those battens perfectly vertical to build off or are you following the shape of the metal uprights? Cheers
Can I ask you what kind of ply did you use for the wall framing? I saw people suggesting use the birch ply due the strength and stability, but here in UK that’s so expensive, so I’m trying to find a similar one but less expensive.
I installed a vapor barrier on my first build. I'm glad I used a translucent barrier because i was able to see just how much moisture that thing trapped into my walls(left an area in the garage space under the bed exposed so I could monitor it) Lets just say I ripped that barrier out and all future builds will never have another vapor barrier. Basically, the outter metal on the body is a vapor barrier, when you add a second vapor barrier on the inside of the van, it essentially traps moisture in the insulation. You need to let the insulation breath and air out!
I like watching you work but l still doubt l could do it. As far as a shower, it's only worthwhile if yr a full-time van lifer and go off grid (such as Max and Occy in Australia). I'd do it bc l love the off grid option but Australia is a very different place. Yr doing great!
Had to stop the video at 8.30.😮 please please please don't have your hand in front of that rip saw. Try to find a way to clamp your wood so you can have your hands in a safer position. Love watching your videos and really looking forward to seeing more but safety first mate. Good job.
Is going great but wouldn't you be better dealing with the roof leaks before sealing it all up inside? Feels like you'll end up with water trapped between the DPM and outer skin of the van which could result in rust
The problem we're having up here in the north east is, the council is getting a bit anti van... They're putting height barriers on many of the car parks now! So my choice of van has all changed.... :(
Hi, please help me - I’m looking at a similar van to this as a stealth camper - and am concerned about insurance cost in the uk ! Can you give me an idea as the insurance seems a little odd over campers
I cant understand why you are using DPM? its not a vapor barrier that you know, its to stop rising damp - you would have been better using the silver lined bubblewrap or silver foil all around.
That’s what I originally thought until I did some research. The foil bubble wrap it pointless as a vapour barrier and all the big camper conversion companies use DPM

I’m just kind of buying as I go so I don’t really have a full price in mind but I am recording everything so once it’s finished I’ll price it all up
@@LoveSundays good luck 😎 looking forward to seeing it come on 👍🏻
Is going great but wouldn't you be better dealing with the roof leaks before sealing it all up inside? Feels like you'll end up with water trapped between the DPM and outer skin of the van which could result in rust
No the water is coming in through the roof not the sides. So no chance of the water getting behind the DPM. I fix the leaks in the next video anyway
Could have been worse mate could have been the bike 🤙
The problem we're having up here in the north east is, the council is getting a bit anti van... They're putting height barriers on many of the car parks now! So my choice of van has all changed.... :(
Find out where the manager of the council carpark department lives and camp outside his/her house instead they’ll soon change their tune 😂
Looking so nice.... when did you say you were gonna do mine 😅
Lol
Progress is slow but worth it in the long run
These early stages take the longest once the furniture starts going in it’ll all speed up hopefully 😂
Great work mate, Do you think it will be ready for 2024?
😂 I hope so.
@@LoveSundays 😂😂😂
Hi, please help me - I’m looking at a similar van to this as a stealth camper - and am concerned about insurance cost in the uk ! Can you give me an idea as the insurance seems a little odd over campers
Speak to Adrian Flux the insure campers even if the van isn’t registered as a camper
How is Master Charlie doing?
Mainly sleeping and pooing
Don't want to drill the ply into the body cos the bits will snap. Proceeds to drill into the body to mount the battens. So confused
Less screws with battens than there would be screwing the ply directly into the metal
No windows in the van, so insurance wise it's not a camper (as that needs 2 windows).
Great to watch it all taking shape it definitely seems like it will be warm enough 😊
Yes it’s definitely warm when I’m working in there 😂
Why is throttle so much bare metal exposed. Seems badly insulated to m.
The biggest negative of no windows is you can't register it as a campervan
If it’s registered as a campervan you can’t park in the carparks that day no camper vans 😉
Doesn't a vapor barrier just trap moisture in?
Not necessarily if the cavities are insulated well enough
I cant understand why you are using DPM? its not a vapor barrier that you know, its to stop rising damp - you would have been better using the silver lined bubblewrap or silver foil all around.
That’s what I originally thought until I did some research. The foil bubble wrap it pointless as a vapour barrier and all the big camper conversion companies use DPM
Hope that's not the wife's kitchen foil
😂
I really wish UK VIDEOS were shown in the UK not America
I suggest you get off the World Wide Web and just watch your terrible American cable TV
...overengineering and overthingking, typical consumer society ...
