As an American who founded a Hurling club at their university I can say that what David is saying here is the same formula that I have used in the past and definitely works. Another piece of advice that I can bring is to reach out to the closest Irish community and the closest Irish Consulate as there are plenty of people that will want to support your club. I have spoken at the consulate in NYC and I received a very positive reaction. I also encourage you to never give up on the sport and organizing it. It will be difficult but its also very rewarding in the end.
That statistic about all ireland final attendance is correct,but the gaelic football equivalent gets higher only in two of the last 16 has hurling final got more than football final.There is only a couple of hundred between them.I say this because hurling needs promotion in ireland as well.Its different in ireland because everyone knows what it is.Donal og cusacks idea of merging counties for hurling would be a great idea i think for an number of reasons it would allow hurlers from the weaker counties a chance to play at the highest level and it would generate interest from fans.For instance sligo mayo roscommon leitrim are never going to win the liam mccarthy,but together they would have the same pick as offaly.You could also have an ulster team west of antrim and down and a north leinster team consisting of westmeath meath longford and louth with the pick of 40 clubs and another team consisting of kildare carlow and wicklow
