I‘m from Munich but I fell in love with Hamburg. Miniaturwunderland and Elbphilharmonie are definitely worth a visit. The Cologne cathedral is impressive and gave me a reverent feeling.

As I'm sure you know Neuschwanstein is what we would call a "folly" in the UK, so you are correct. If you like your castles, take a trip along the River Mosel (Moselle, French spelling) from Burg Eltz down to the ancient Roman city of Trier, with plenty of other castles on the way, enjoying some delicious white wines on the journey. Many of the vineyards have reasonable priced guesthouses attached. We always did at least one weeks holiday on the Mosel when I was stationed over there and it's generally not quite so "touristy" as the Rhine, south of Koblenz, where the two rivers split.

Hamburg is actually not on the coast. But the river Elbe, which runs from the Czech Republic through eastern Germany passes Hamburg and then it ends in the North Sea approx. 100km later. That's where the maritime flair comes from ;)

Cologne cathedral is spectacular. Honestly, video and photos don’t do it justice. They can’t capture how massive it actually is. You feel like an ant when you leave the train station and walk up to it

Underneath No1 "Kölner Dom" is a basement ... if've been there 30 years ago and no tourist knew about it. It wasn't opened to the public, but as far as I know: since a few years you can go downstairs, too! :) *epic

definitely can remember that i visited the "basement" as a child. you just had to apply for it and the stuff was mainly found anyway after the second world war. but as someone, who was born in cologne, that might just be common knowledge.

The cathedral is built on the site of the Roman forum. And, in the 14th century, the builders alternated layers of hard and soft stones in the foundations which makes the structure more stable in a slightly seismically active environment. It is quite amazing they did that at all.

Neuschwantstein was basically already a Disney castle before Disney copied it.
    Only the Disney was Wagner.

In the movie "A-Team" (movie, not series) a major part of the plot is located in Frankfurt. Not only they showed arial views of cologne subtitled with "Frankfurt" but also located Frankfurt somewhere near the alps and made police officers with norwegian uniforms appear. That makes you being puzzled on Cologne or Frankfurt so hilarious. 😀

Visited Neuschwanstein Castle years ago. There's a waterfall on the other side of the bridge. There was also a nice man in lederhosen my parents made me take a picture with. Stunning views all around.

Neuschwanstein Castle and Heidelberg Castle were actually built by members of the same family, however at very different times. Heidelberg was the seat of the Count Palatinate and Prince-Elector of the Palatinate of the Rhine (ruled like Bavaria by the Wittelsbach dynasty), until it was destroyed first by French troops and afterwards by lightning during the 7 Years' War (1688-1697).

If America would handle their treating of the Indian Nation and Slaves the same way Germany handles the Third Reich and their atrocities, we could be proud. No. America does !have the balls to admit they messed up. The Cathedral in Cologne is beautiful, but I loved the Roman/Germanium museum right around the corner much more. The Romans had central heating and hot water in their baths! Seriously. Amazing. We lived in a small town on the Rhine and there were the remnants of a 30,000 year old tribe! They used horses as field animals not as food. Also there were findings in the area of tribes and their weapons (sling shots) and Domas. Mother like figurines that they worshipped. Germany us amazing and I loved every day living there.

I've confused Frankfurt Cathedral with the Cologne one too. Probably because the two towers and the name Frankfurt are more memeorable and it's easy to just stick them together.

By the way, the video is wrong about the Cologne cathedral. It is only number 3 in the world in height, but it is the largest church in the world. The video said it is the third largest church and that is not true.

Well... How different perceptions can be. 5 years ago in Crete I met an elderly British gentleman. We stood at the same bus stop and waited. Then we kind of got into a conversation. First about some very ordinary things and then he made a few comments about how crappy he found all this Brexit bullshit. And at the end, when the bus was almost there, he said to me: "You know, I served in the Army of the Rhine in the late 50's. And that was the best time of my life..."

Just do it, you won't regret it! Hamburg is awesome (especially Miniatur Wunderland - the largest model railway thingy) and often copies British weather! Cologne cathedral is spectacular and indeed a must see. But I would recommend to extend travel plans for the entire Ruhr valley region, depending on your prefrerences (medival castles, Roman ruins, nature, wine, or whatever you prefer), because everything in the valley is nearby. Berlin is a good choice, lots of things to see, but I would recommend to give Dresden a try as well. Maybe combine it with a trip on the river Elbe, towards the Czech Republic, through a magical landscape.
